Sea Bound

Every year, millions of tiny, baby olive ridley sea turtles hatch on Rushikulya Beach in India. It’s a treacherous journey—experts estimate that only 1 in every 1,000 baby sea turtles will make it to the water before being killed by a predator.

Yes, yes you did. I don’t know how you see through the wax fumes.
Kidding.
Congrats.

Yef

I GOT IT!!!!11111111

Take that, Jonn!

I knew you could not always change the name of the thread!

26Limabeans

That comment was unsportsmanlike.

2/17 Air Cav

Whoa. That was close. Yef gets his first unsportsmanlike and it will cost him 15 yards. If it had been his second today, he would have been ejected, nullifying his first. It’s right there is the rules, if anyone would ever bother to read them.

SFC D

Flag on the play, unsportsmanlike conduct on Yef! Wait, the officials are conferring, let’s see how this shakes out!

2/17 Air Cav

Ref flips switch on hip, starts to talk and realizes it WAS on and now it’s off. He flips the switch again:

“After the play, Yef insinuated that Jonn previously manipulated threads to ensure that Yef could not be the first WOT commenter. Unsportsmanlike conduct. 15 yards and loss of down. That is Yef’s first unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.”

Whoa, whoa, what do you mean?

“Every year, millions of tiny, baby olive ridley sea turtles hatch on Rushikulya Beach” – hence DoD’s warnings about predictability. If only the turtles would vary the timing and routing of their journey…..

Wilted Willy

They all hatch at once to try and over whelm the predators. One in a thousand make it to adult breeding age. They really have a tough start to life!!!

Mason

I live on a nature preserve with a sizable pond a few hundred feet behind the house. Every couple of years the toads hatch. I’ll have hundreds if not thousands of the little buggers, about the size of a pencil eraser, bounding around the yard. I call the mower “toad chucker” during those seasons.

Wilted Willy

Isn’t that lot’s of fun? You get a real toad load on the mower>>

Ex-PH2

Leopard frogs that were eggs in April are nearing adulthood. They blend in with the ground cover so you don’t see them until they jump away from you. Can’t go anywhere without stepping on them, then you see that you’re surrounded by hundreds, maybe thousands of croaking, spotted, hopping samples of heron and egret food.

Wilted WIlly

Don’t you have a good receipe for frog legs? They are pretty good barbequed? YUM!!!

Ex-PH2

No, ’cause I can’t stand frog as food.

The Brit soldiers called the French Johnny Crapaud during Napoleon’s Euro campaigns, Crapaud meaning frog eater. The French are almost as bad as the Chinese. If you can cook it, it is edible, or even if it can’t be cooked, it’s potentially edible. They eat snails, too.

David

Snails… yummy.

Perry Gaskill

Pot meet kettle. Brit soldiers ragging on the French for eating frog legs seems a bit ironic considering some favorite British dishes include tripe and jellied eels…

Lars Taylor's Narcissism

So there I was, sitting on the toilet, needing to take a crap, but no crap coming out. So I worked hard and forced, forced, but to no avail. Then, determined, I overcame. Finally, I thought I could succeed… I let her rip!

Then I woke up, but by then my ass was on runaway mode. I couldn’t stop. As I woke further, I noticed that I was in a tent, with Soldiers waking up and getting pissed at me. It was the beginning of our two week annual training, we were in the field, there was no running water, and I only brought enough for basic hygiene and toileting.

I ran out the tent and tried to wash up the only way I could. Problem was that the medics ended up shutting the water buffalo down. That wasn’t the end of my problems.

It was the middle of the afternoon, I still smelt like shit, and Soldiers were dropping left and right due to heat casualty. The water buffalo was still being tested.

Talk about a shitty start to my annual training.

rgr769

Now there is a real CA trooper’s war story! And you can’t even start telling it by saying, “And this is no shit.” That one will become legendary in the history of the 351st Civil Affairs Group.

I’m still on my vacation road trip in the southeast CONUS. Commissioner Wretched

By a total lack of popular demand, I present once again my weekly trivia/humor column for your edification and enlightenment. (Or something like that.) I hope you enjoy! DID YOU KNOW…? Did a Russian scientist invent a computer which ran on water? By Commissioner Wretched Ah, summer. You just gotta love summer. When I was a teacher, I practically lived for summertime to arrive; it made the previous 10 months bearable. Now, as a writer/editor (or whatever I’m doing this week), summer is just another season, one in which I am grateful for the invention of air conditioning. But it’s still wonderful. Going for walks in the woods … heading down to the pool for a swim … sitting on the porch enjoying the evenings. I don’t actually do any of this, but it does sound pretty nice, doesn’t it? Summer is also baseball season, and – if you know me – you know how much that means. If you’re going to vacation during the summer, please travel safely and enjoy whatever you’re going to do. Me, I’ll just slog along, digging up these neat nuggets of trivia just for you to read (when you get back). Drop a line if you’re so inclined. I’m at didyouknowcolumn@gmail.com and I always answer. With summer upon us, let’s get to some cool trivia! Did you know … … the first storage for Google was made of Legos? Google needed something that could house ten 4-gigabyte hard drives cheaply and be expandable, and a structure of Legos fit the bill just right. (Can you imagine Google running just 40 gigabytes?) … Canada contains nine percent of the world’s renewable water supply? … the hair of British Prime Minister Dame Margaret Thatcher (1925-2013) actually became more blonde as she became more powerful? (There’s a medical name for that, but I prefer the layman’s term. Clairol.) … pouring sugar directly onto a cut or wound can help it heal faster? (Sweet!) … the side of a hammer is called the cheek? Didn’t understand a word of it, but fascinating nonetheless.

IDC SARC

Commissioner

Question…how the hell did you choose your subject for your dissertation? I’m struggling with that.

Commissioner Wretched

Not sure what you mean, IDC SARC. Do you mean the actual work or the statistical work?

IDC SARC

How you chose the topic.

Commissioner Wretched

There were a few possible options available in my cohort that were unselected; I liked the one about discipline, and having worked with Civil Air Patrol cadets for years, I wondered how their school discipline compared to kids who did not have a military-styled program to assist. Also, the schools I worked with had JROTC programs as well. My teaching was taking place in a poor, mostly minority school system, where discipline was so off-the-charts that we were finally told to stop writing referrals for anything that didn’t involve blood, because it was making the system look bad. That was pretty much the catalyst for my selecting “military-style” and “non-military-style” discipline.
It comes across as pretty dry and dull in the dissertation, believe me. I wrote it and I didn’t want to read it again.
My research showed that the in-school (or, in the CAP connection, outside-school) influence of the military had no real effect on behavior and disciplinary referrals. It ended up pretty much a wash, as external factors had a lot more to do with it.
As the comedians used to say, “It seemed like a good idea at the time.”

Ex-PH2

Thank you!

OWB

Hah! Was just talking about plenums this week. Yes, we all have experience with them, probably have or work with one. Being the overachiever that I am, I have two.

Jane Fonda: Kavanaugh Confirmation ‘Will Be a Catastrophe’

Breitbart News Link

Actress and left-wing activist Jane Fonda says the confirmation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh as the next Supreme Court Justice would be a “catastrophe” for women and worker’s rights in the United States.

Addressing a press conference at the coalition of ‘Unstoppable Women Workers,’ Fonda said that Kavanaugh would endanger women’s rights for generations to come.

“I think it will be a catastrophe, frankly, if this nomination goes through, for everyone and our children and unfortunately our grandchildren,” Fonda said. “Look, women’s rights, worker’s rights, will be shunted to the side and that’s just the beginning. It will be a catastrophe.”

If Hanoi Jane doesn’t like him, he must be a great pick.

OWB

Was thinking the same – Fonda doesn’t like him is all I need to know. Well, not really, but it’s a good start.

Yef

But I saw a picture of her back in her days, and she was kinda hott.

Ex-PH2

Yef, she was never hot. She’s never been anything but a so-so wannabe actress who got hired for movies because of her daddy, who was a fine actor, and who served in the Navy during WWII.

She’s a bimbo. Get yer eyes back in their sockets, boy.

She was only kinda hot in a stank-ass commie loving hippie way. Trust us youngster, the combined smells of patchouli oil, incense, weed and B.O. isn’t attractive to anyone who isn’t high. Her traitor political views make most of us here want to barf.

A Proud Infidel®™️

Maybe Yef is just too young to remember just what a COMMIE TRAITOR WHORE “Hanoi Jane” Fonda is and he hasn’t learned just yet. She has issued a couple of VERY half-assed excuses for apologies over the years but those were obviously for her to be allowed to do something to make her money.

First 5 minutes of Barbarella.

Best movie response to her ever
Fonda: It’s interesting that the only two occupations you think I could have are being a secretary or a hooker!
Segal: Jane, you can’t type, either.

HMC Ret

No, Yef, there is much more to being ‘hott’ than looks. With her, it’s impossible to get past the snakiness, her being a traitor, a crappy actress and an all around low life rat fucker. Given those factors, I wouldn’t give a damn what she looked like. She’s a traitor who sold out her country and American POWs for a photo op. She is the moral equivalent of pond scum.

OWB

Pond scum and the entity that grows in unattended JP-4 actually have more value and are morally superior to that traitor.

You’re not doing it right. We run a Compressed Work Schedule- every other Friday starts a three day weekend. Alternating 48/32 hour work weeks.

OWB

Four 10’s every week was always my favorite. Nobody else like having Wednesday off, but I did. What’s not to like about never working more than 2 days in a row ever?

AW1Ed

Not a bad deal, either. I think of all the times as aircrew we would brief, pre-flight, fly the mission, post-flight and debrief. Depending on the mission profile a 20 hour day was not uncommon. I was so tired I could hardly hoist my beer or read my per diem check, afterwards.

HMC Ret

I have a question regarding that sort of thing. If a female is a bull dyke–and we’ll call her R. Maddow–and a male is a sweetpea–we’ll call him D. Hogg, shouldn’t they be perfect for one another? Maddow wants a woman and Hogg wants a man. Seems to me that would work.

Papa John’s former CEO is now its former board chairman as well. He stepped down as CEO last year b/c he dared to fault the NFL kneelers. This time, he was in a media training exercise of some sort during May and it involved a telephone conference call. He was asked how he would distance himself from racist groups (Why? I have no idea.) Maybe he should have said, “Free pizza for a month for anyone who takes a selfie with a burning Confederate battle flag. He didn’t. Instead he said something about Colonel Sanders never apologizing for using the word nipper. No, not nipper, but I don’t want to see TAH named a hate group again. So, Papa John is done. Cooked. Over. DOA. Such are the times in which we live. BTW, I have never even tried a PJ’s Pizza. I used to be a Domino’s guy but then I discovered that for half the price and asking for the pie to be well done, Little Caesar’s is delicious.

OWB

Glad you explained that. Thanks, A/C. Had missed doing the research on how John got into the mess. (Been a crazy couple of weeks around here.)

Otherwise, Papa John’s used to be the best chain pizza in my area. Not the cheapest, but the best. It’s difficult to beat the Little Caesar deals, and it’s plenty good.

Perhaps has choice of words was not ideal, but it doesn’t sound nearly as bad as the hateful things that others have said.

rgr769

So, the DOJ/Mueller gang has indicted some Russian GRU men for hacking into DNC computer system/servers and Podesta’s email and maybe some Widleload’s illegal system. But riddle me this TAHers, can the FBI/DOJ legitimately and justifiably investigate, indict and prosecute some gang of bank burglars and thieves for breaking into a bank and its vault, stealing the banks cash, and get away in the night, when neither the FBI nor any other LEO’s have ever been to the bank or inside its bank vault? Because that is what they just did with this “indictment” that will never be tried in a court room. Remember, the DNC refused to have the FBI look at their servers and so did the Clinton Mob. The DNC had Crowdstrike examine their servers. Guess who hired it; it was Perkins, Coie, the same Demonrat law firm that hired Fusion GPS to do the Trump dossier and conceal that the Clinton campaign was paying for it. So, the FBI/DOJ are obviously relying on the Crowdstrike report that the Russians hacked the server and its claim that is where WikiLeaks got the emails. But the vaunted FBI computer gurus have never seen the scene of the crime, the “hacked” servers or any network computer. Maybe the handful of proggies who lurk here can solve the riddle, but I think not.

OWB

That is the first question I had – how can they file criminal charges when they never examined the evidence?

Don’t they have to first establish that a crime occurred? “Somebody told me that they saw something” may be enough to trigger an investigation of a criminal act, but hearsay is generally frowned upon in courts of law. “Best evidence” is the term thrown around on TV shows a lot.

rgr769

The Best Evidence Rule is really the best evidence of a writing rule, which means that secondary evidence of what a writing says is not admissible, unless the original writing has been lost or destroyed. For example, in most states one can’t introduce in evidence a photocopy of a document if one can’t show why the original document isn’t offered in evidence.
Without having people who can testify they examined the original servers and coomputers and show a chain of custody for them, DOJ can never prove this case. Mueller’s gang knows this, but it doesn’t matter because the Russians charged in the indictment will never be tried in any US courtroom because Russia will never extradite them. The indictment is nothing but a propaganda stunt to influence lo-fo’s (low information voters).

OWB

Stopped in Arcola many years ago and it was a thoroughly pleasant day. There was lots to see and do back then, perhaps even more now.

One more thread and this week’s WOT gets bumped into oblivion. Before it goes, as it must, I have a question. Why the hell is it that if I buy wood floor planks and am careful to allow for 10% waste, I still come up short a piece or two and end up having to buy another case?

Yeah, that’s an opening you could drive a truck through sideways. Go ahead. Have at it. I deserve it.

Maybe if you had started with a case it would have worked out just right, at least you would have enjoyed the work.

It’s like measuring fabric for a pattern: you always get more than the pattern requires because there are those itty-bitty pieces that have to be cut individually and on a certain angle to match the weave of the fabric.

Always buy a yard extra.

Always buys more wood than you thought you’d need.

It has been my experience that whatever principle is at play with your flooring also applies to plumbing supplies, fencing, and just about anything needed to fix or improve life around Casa OWB.

I’m 9 feet short on the last course.
