Church shooting averted in Alabama
WHNT reports on the story of events in Limestone County, Alabama yesterday when Thomas Zebulun Lewter, 34, began to lecture his soon-to-be-ex-wife and her parents from the pulpit of the O’Neal Church of Christ;
Stephen Young, Public Information Officer with the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office, said Lewter approached the pulpit during the service and began to speak about his pending divorce, calling out his wife and father-in-law who were present in the service.
According to authorities, congregants approached the pulpit and tried to convince Lewter to stop talking and sit down, but he refused. That’s when deputies say Lewter attempted to grab his handgun. Deputies say congregants tackled and restrained him.
A retired Limestone County Sheriff’s deputy who was present assisted, Young said, and handcuffed Lewter while they waited for deputies to arrive.
I suppose shooting your soon-to-be-ex-wife won’t convince her to stop divorce proceedings, neither will failing to shoot her because of your neighbors piled on top of you. Try chocolates and flowers.

Please, Chip, I am considering converting to Yefism. Seeing the world as a Yefist does have its pschological benefits.
AH,
I’m sorry, I totally misunderstood because I think you’re using the *modern” spelling as opposed to the more “classical”
“Yefum”, but of course, it’s all right here in black and white.

Shooting his wife in church sure disturbs a good preaching! lol…this guy should have listened and read the Bible while he was in church!
Guy looks pissed.
“Try chocolates and flowers”
Don’t give the guy any ideas…..
Somehow I don’t think this little act will help his case in the divorce proceedings, especially if he has to attend via video conference.
I’ve heard of amicable divorces but don’t recall ever meeting anyone that had one. BTW is this a setup for a Jeff Foxworthy joke? You know, as in, if you’ve ever denounced your soon to be ex from a church pulpit, you might be a redneck.
I did, more or less.
Only when I learned afterwards she filed for bankruptcy DURING the divorce (bug no-no) and stuck me with a couple of rather large CC bills she was supposed to pay did it turn to warm runny shit.
Based solely upon his actions yesterday, I would say that wifey made a bad choice in marrying him and a good choice in cutting him loose.
One daughter left her useless husband and I had a hinky feeling about him, esp since his father murdered his mother (and killed himself) in their own divorce. Wife was initially shocked when I put a gun in her purse for church…in church she said? She agreed when I reminded her that said daughter sits with us in church. That was a year ago with no incidents, but my SA is still high.
I was just cleaning out a kitchen drawer and found an old newspaper from May 06.
Looked up the article on the web and there it was.

stay safe
So he wasn’t happy with the idea of divorce? Or he thought a gun would be a more effective way to negotiate terms?
Yeah, nail him, good and hard.
im sure somebody will, dear. have faith. he’s gonna get nailed good and hard for a long, long time.
and the gun was not a negotiating tool. it was a DIY method, im sure.
Crazy lard ass….why do they always want to shoot their way out of a divorce?
Don’t marry the first ‘tang you get and don’t get married too young and you’ll be amazed at what a better life you might have. I’d also advise young men today to never get married, there’s no advantage in it for them and if they think they have to get married get a pre-nup and make sure the shit you had before you get married is still your shit when it goes south as it so often does in the US.
I’ve been down the ex-wife path….as have many others, that path was not chosen by me, but I was directed onto it anyway.
For me banging some of her friends and having her find out turned out to be far more satisfying than anything else I could ever have imagined.
Also living really, really well since she tossed me out has also been enjoyable…
Shit happens, life moves on even after shitty people who were supposed to be on your side through it all do shitty things to you…
I guess we’ve been blessed. Mrs. HMC was 19 and an Army Medic SP4 (?) and I was an HM3 Navy Corpsman, 21 y/o when we married. Neither of us has wandered. I know. How do I KNOW she didn’t? B/C I know her. Now, 47 years later and ‘things’ couldn’t be better. Other than limitations brought about by aging and health concerns, we are good to go.
Don’t understand what he hoped to accomplish by his actions. Maybe irrational thinking caused him to believe this was a way to win her back. I’m thinking not so much. He was possibly consumed with hatred.
Our church is very safety conscious. We have layers of security, individuals outside, immediately inside and a final layer inside the church itself. Sprinkled throughout those in attendance are others with specific assignments in the event someone pulls a weapon. We don’t talk about it. We don’t compare handguns. We have regular meetings with the pastor. It’s all very low key. Ours is just one of the churches in the area and nationwide that have taken similar measures to protect themselves. We also have two retired LEOs who attend and an active LEO who attends when his schedule permits. The sheriff’s department has regular meetings with pastors and church members re safety. There is always a whack job with an agenda, hoping to make a name for themselves.
47 years? Couldn’t you have made parole by now?
(wife of 40 years HATES that line for some reason._
Good Job, HMC Ret. It is 44 & counting for Mrs. GB and myself.
Our church is also chock full of LEOs, active & retired, and have set up a security detail that is very unobtrusive. The LTC church members are backup.
We’ve also had more than one nut job come through, and we are very aware that while one can present the Gospel, the other guy/gal has to accept it willingly. Some don’t.
Our pastor has confessed, in the pulpit, to pinning a guy against the wall by the throat when the guy struck his wife during a counseling session.
I like our pastor.
Right on, marrying young isn’t the problem, its not accept responsibility and no honoring the vows…THATS THE PROBLEM! My wife and I were 17 when we married, been married 56 years….”and they said it wouldn’t last” lol

Glad they got this asshole. Wish they’d been able to stop this one before it happened, too – also Alabama:

Yeah…I’m thinking that threatening to shoot your ex isn’t going to make her think you’re not such a bad guy after all.
I had a pretty tough go of it when my ex departed my life. And I mean TOUGH. I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy. It lingers to this day, and it happened in 1993.
I’ll admit that I felt like this guy. I really did.
Unlike him, who entered a church with murder in mind, I never entered a church, but took the Christian approach.
She is still alive. I am not in prison. And both of us are the better for it.
