| February 21, 2018

Military.com reports that Sergeant Christina Marie Schoenecker, a Reservist from Kansas, died in a non-combat incident while involved in Operation Inherent Resolve.

Schoenecker, 26, of Arlington, Kansas, was assigned to the 89th Sustainment Brigade out of Wichita, Army officials said in a brief release. They did not reveal the circumstances of her death, but said she was in Baghdad at the time.

The 89th Sustainment Brigade falls under the 451st Expeditionary Sustainment Command.

According to the command, Schoenecker was a human resources specialist who joined the Army in 2009. She was promoted to sergeant in January 2015 and was completing her first deployment at the time of her death.

Sad. Fair winds and following seas, Sergeant Schoenecker.

Peace to her family. Thanks for sharing her with us for a while.

Crying shame! Why in hell are we sacrificing our young to that bunch of uncivilized beasts? the bastards have been fighting and killing each other from time began…if they can’t find an infidel to kill they will kill each other! I would defend the Kurds and to hell with the rest, they either figure it out, or kill each other off, the world would be a better place either way imho

hacksaw

She did not die in combat. She was on BDSC, I knew her, nice girl. She either killed herself or one of the joes there did it.

hacksaw

she bounced back and forth between Besaymya and BDSC as the mail person so she might have been killed at Besaymya

T

No, she was in her hooch at BDSC. She hasn’t done the Besmayah mail in quite a while. She was a truly great young woman to know and hang out with. She will be missed by all of us who knew her.

.

How do you know this?

Another one taken far too soon, Rest In Peace.

In Army legalese, what does a non-combat incident covers?

Can it be some type of a crime involved?

19D3OR4-Smitty

It can be anything. Usually it is some sort of accident.

Martinjmpr

Anything. Vehicle accident, CO poisoning from a malfunctioning heater, adverse drug reaction, fall off a ladder, heart attack while doing PT (not likely for a 26 year old but it does happen – unknown heart defect, for example), negligent discharge of a weapon, assault, etc. etc.

Being in the military is a dangerous line of work, no matter what your MOS is. There are jobs that are “safer” and those that are “less safe” but there are no really “safe” jobs when you’re deployed to a combat zone.

RIP, Sergeant.

Rest in peace Soldier.

How are all of these soldiers dying in Iraq while not in combat?

Seriously what the hell is going on over at the embassy.

Stacy0311

This one was at BDSC (Baghdad Diplomatic Support Center) which is at BIAP (formerly part of VBC.

We have soldiers all over the AO. Union III, Taji, Al Asad, TQ, Erbil. Then there are the coalition bases.

SGT Schoenecker is the 8th soldier to die since I’ve been here. Only 1 has been due to direct enemy action (IED). The rest have been non-combat accidents or other causes.

E4 Mafia For Life.

1/2 of the deaths in the Gulf War were accidents. Of the 957,000 coalition troops
147 were KIA
145 in accidents.
25 by fratricide. I don’t know which figure those fell under
Most were road accidents and being around heavy machinery, and I’m sure some other odd-ball stuff.

Graybeard

When my son was in the Strykers, there were several incidents where they would almost roll over when someone was being stupid or circumstances conspired against them.

I pray that Sgt. Schoeneker’s family finds peace their grief.

While most of what you said can be found online, this information shouldn’t be posted on sites like this; specially since we are trying to keep a low profile out there. Please remember OPSEC when discussing our troops overseas.

Can someone tell me the purpose of a Sustainment Brigade? I know sustain, sustainment, etc., but not in the context of the military.

RIP Young Lady. Great Sadness.

RIP Soldier… thank you for your service.

As OWB stated, thank you to her family for sharing her with us and for the sacrifice. We all morn for the loss of our sister.

Grant unto her eternal rest o Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her.
Tina was the mail clerk, and ran mail to the outstations. She was the quintessential “all American girl” from Kansas. She worked in a florist shop back in Kansas for crying out loud. Her beauty was only surpassed by her professionalism as an NCO.
May she rest in peace and comfort for her family.

11B-Mailclerk

She is now delivering the mail for a much higher headquarters.

God rest you, Sergeant Schoenecker.

Graybeard

Amen, Carlos.

Amen.

I live in a town in Kansas (pop. 800) very much like Arlington. It is full of veterans and has about ten active reserves and four active duty. that is above 1%. It is hard on a community this size where everyone knows everyone to loose one of their service members. God Speed.

Rest in peace, our younger sister in arms.

Rest In Peace, Sergeant. Gone far too soon,

Very sad… RIP Sergeant.

Unofficial spokesman in Baghdad has called her death a suicide. If true this is a failure of her command. People contemplating suicide leave hints that something is not right in their lives. It might be easy to miss the signals if you aren’t paying close attention. In this case someone took their eyes off the ball.

A tragedy for all considered.

EODJay

I fucking hate the “unofficial spokesman.” While his unofficial statement may be factual, the Army doesn’t release information until all the boxes are checked for a reason. This may be an ongoing investigation or notifying next of kin. These unofficial statements do nothing but muddy the waters or cause undue stress to family and friends. People need to learn to keep their damn mouths shut.

desert

That’s also a good copout for a command that wasn’t doing their job and missed a dangerous situation, rather that take the heat, call it a suicide! imho

Justice Seeker

Rest In Peace SGT Schoenecker,. My deepest condolences to the family, may you find peace and strength to find the truth surrounding this tragedy. Be careful of this command, the higher headquarters and the Armys reputation for avoiding ugly truths. Stand for justice there are many former members of this command who tried to reveal truths that remain elusive despite many complaints filed.

.

Care to elaborate?

Justice Seeker

Out of respect for SGT Schoenecker, her family and friends this is not the appropriate forum or platform to elaborate. However, I will say organizational cultures that promote going along to get along and suppress doing the right thing to avoid acknowledging and addressing issues for fear of ruining public perception, create environments that makes it easy to coverup and mask problems rather than reveal the truth. It will take strength and patience to seek the truth rather than depend on this type of culture to simply reveal the truth.

.

Not that I doubt you, but simply saying that ‘this command and higher headquarters’ is responsible, without actually stating reasons seems unresponsible on your part.

Don’t get me wrong, the Army screws up on a millisecond basis, and Soldiers suffer due to it. But without documented, specific examples of past failures I feel like your concerns will fall on deaf ears.

Justice Seeker

Noted. Not looking for concurrence or to prove anything here.

Justice Seeker

Also I simply stated be careful of this command and higher headquarters. Do not mistake that for blaming the command. But your concern is noted but unwarranted. Again out of respect for SGT Schoenecker, family and friends I will leave it at that.

Tim Gray

I’d like to say we are all well past the point of notifying the next of kin. so that being- does anyone know of any final resolution on this incident? Maybe I’m being pessimistic but my Spidey sense tells me that something is wrong about this fatality! Hope I’m wrong, but if someone is carrying around knowledge that suicide was not in fact the cause of this…
Then we’ve got soldiers who aren’t shouldering the “Creed” And that may cause future incidents when they look in the mirror. Some have mentioned above to leave this alone, I call BS! Live the Creed!
