Friday morning feel good stories

| December 22, 2017

From Lowell, Massachusetts;

As the co-owner of Valentina’s Portuguese Market walked into the frozen-goods section to grab a drink Wednesday night, he heard, “Oh my God” from the register.

Max, 25, saw a robber pointing a gun at the other co-owner of Valentina’s, located at 886 Central St.

Max, who declined give his last name, immediately stepped back around Portuguese imported cheese and cereals, pulled out the gun he’s licensed to carry, cocked his gun and waited for the thief.

“I fired. Boom. Boom,” recalled Max Thursday morning. “I thought he was dead right there, but he got up. I fired two more. Boom. Boom. He was ducking, though. I would have got him if he was standing up.”

Again, the suspect was lying on the floor.

Then he popped up quickly and ran out the door of the market in the city’s Back Central neighborhood.

From Philadelphia, Pennsylvania;

Authorities say Osiris Lester, who was allegedly armed with a gun, tried to rob a man but the alleged victim pulled out his own gun and shot Lester, hitting him in the wrist.

Police say Lester ran to a nearby fast-food restaurant but was arrested there a short time later. He was transported to Albert Einstein Medical Center for treatment and listed in stable condition.

Lester faces robbery, simple assault and other related charges.

From Chicago, Illinois;

The 17-year-old boy tried to rob the store in the 200 block of North Kedzie at 10:46 a.m., according to Chicago Police.

The robbery was interrupted by the store owner, a 40-year-old man, who exchanged gunfire with the suspect, police said.

The teen was shot in the upper right shoulder and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition, police said. He is in police custody, and was previously arrested for armed robbery on Nov. 28.

Eggs sends a story from Winston-Salem, North Carolina about NASCAR team owner and Hall of Fame member Richard Childress;

The individuals fled Childress’ home in the Reedy Creek area after Childress armed himself with a handgun to investigate a crash heard on the lower level of his house.

Law enforcement officials are still searching for the suspects; surveillance video shows the faces of the intruders were covered. They broke in by smashing a window next to a doorknob and in doing so, activated an alarm. The three individuals appeared to be carrying firearms.

There was no indication any of the suspects were injured and officials say nothing was taken from the Childress home.

In an update to yesterday’s story from Cleveland, Ohio, the criminal who was shot and killed, Cornelius Love, had been released from prison on Sunday after serving 21-months for armed robbery. He would have been on probation until 2020, if he had lived long enough. That’s rehabilitation that you can take to the bank;

The 41-year-old homeowner saw Love breaking into the home and shot him several times, police said. Officers found Love dead in the home near a staircase, according to police.

“Cornelius Love”

Hmmmm….

And the Claw says?

Claw

“Cornhole Lover” (I know you were thinking it, so I said it) is DRT, no further taxpayer upkeep required and scores a 18×3=54.

Deplorable B Woodman

Sounds like a tennis score, “54 – Love”. Only Love lost.

Ex-PH2

Osiris Lester…?

Is that anything like Orticia on the Name Scrabble scale?

Portuguese imported cheese… I’ve had Spanish imported cheese. Really good stuff, wonderful flavor, smooth and not too dry, goes well with a Tuscan red and/or a not very snippy white. I wonder if I will see Portuguese cheeses showing up next summer.

Claw

Osiris Lester (WRT) scores a tiny 12×2=24.

It ain’t easy being cheesy.

MCPO NYC USN Ret.

Looks like IQ score.

I think it’s a constellation

Ex-PH2

Bingo!

ALVO

200 North Kedzie Chicago….. Ozzz, O knowz it well. I lived there 20+ years and I am not surprised at that young fool tried to rob a store there for breakfast. 2nd time in one month? They think they are invincible. Ummmm, no. Lock his ass up for 5, then see how cocky he is.

MCPO NYC USN Ret.

Speaking of criminals getting what is deserved, DAB has a court appearance today.

I am certain he will comport himself properly and reasonably state his case respectfully to the bench.

I look forward to the expected results later today.

Kinda’ like a wee ‘lil early Christmas gift.

Tallywhagger

I think the floor show was canceled for this morning. His next scheduled appearance is set for January 8, 2018 during which he is proposed to enter a plea agreement.

Happy Holidays Dan.

Whatever became of our resident song writer? I’d like to hear a ballad about Dan and the DRG.

MCPO NYC USN Ret.

Oh, that is too bad.

So, he gets 3 meals and a cot through Christmas and New Years … isn’t that special.

He had that skit worked out to perfection!

“Couldn’t happen to a ‘nicer’ guy.”

(smile)

On a related note: anyone have current status on SoMeOnE eLsE wE aLl KnOw AnD ‘LoVe’?” Seems to me he was also enjoying “state hospitality” as of last report, but that was some time ago.

Tallywhagger

I looked him up last week and he’s still a sponsored guest of Maryland. He and Brutha D both be spending they Critmus in da’ hoosgow. Florida is a better place for it.

I wonder if Frankie has taken the initiative to advise the local authorities that two luminaries have been detained from doing misdeeds in other states.

“Then he popped up quickly and ran out the door”

Damn pop up targets. Now they have them moving.

Bobo

It’s time for Max from Lowell to step up to something beyond the small caliber that he’s carrying now and spend some more time at the range.

Lowell is a pit and he’s probably going to have another opportunity to end a robbery.

Tallywhagger

They have a strong Portuguese community there. If the villain lives in Lowell, he’ll be in custody in short order. Now Lawrence is a bit more to the sifty side and it wouldn’t surprise anyone if the thief is eventually arrested there.

Other than a .357, anything less than a 9 mm is probably inadequate beyond about 15 feet. OTOH, something is always better than nothing when you need it.

David

Think Max needs to work more on “hit hit” than “boom boom.

AW1Ed

.357 means you never have to say you’re sorry.

Tallywhagger

Amen.

In other news, I spent an enjoyable afternoon yesterday as Rangemaster for our two godchildren and two oldest grandchildren.

Lessons learned:
The battleship targets are a lot of fun.
The modern .22 rifles are very accurate.
The girls beat the boys (a double sister-brother rivalry) 2 out of 2 matches, but barely.
Any varmint that gets after the chickens whenever those four are armed is doomed.
When they are old enough to get their LTC, anything or any one that messes with them is in for a big surprise.
I’d rather be shooting with them than working any day of the week.

Tallywhagger

Ruger 10/22 is a tack driver, right out of the box. I shot thousands of rounds through mine and could hit mud daubers, on the wing, with it. It’s better without a scope. Great snake killer but I became partial to getting up close and personal with them and a 9 mm.

These days I’m down to a Benjamin break action pellet rifle and squirrel management. Massachusetts laws can be obscene but they don’t have problems with pellet rifles. Great fun and the birds appreciate having access to the feeders.

Graybeard

I may be ostracized, but none of our .22’s is a Ruger – although I do not sneer at the 10/22.

The Remington got a 5-shot group of 0.25″ yesterday. We didn’t group the Marlin this go-round, but the new bolt-action got a sub-0.5″ group as well.

The guns definitely shoot better than the gunners.

Tallywhagger

You live pretty close to Cheaper Than Dirt, as I imagine. They had great prices on ammo back when I could still get it delivered. Do they still sell .22 by the brick?

Nothing wrong with a Remington, that was my first .22 Bolt action and a tubular magazine, shorts & longs not magnums. Never shot a Marlin but one of these days I’ll get a lever action 30.30 just to look good on the horse!

Graybeard

I became put-off by CTD for some silly reason I’ve since forgotten, and haven’t even been checking the webpages lately.

Doing most of my resupply through our local Academy Sports + Outdoors outlet. They do have bricks listed on the webpage and (I believe) in stock. Remington HPs, 1,400ct JHP@$79.99 or 525ct@$28.99 – 5.7 cents/round, Winchester JHP 555ct@29.99 for 5.4 cents/round.

I’m looking at a couple of 30-06s and .308s for deer guns, or a 12ga, all on sale right now. Need to sit down with the CFO and get the PO cleared before the sale ends.

Tallywhagger

I have 30.06 & .308 but use them for different purposes. If I had to choose only one I’d still go with a 30.06 just for the vast array of ammo available. Once you start looking beyond about 300 meters the .308 will get you there and more.

We don’t have Academy up here but I shopped there often when in Louisiana. Good prices and good selection.

Hope the CFO can find a few unappropriated shillings to put toward the allocation 🙂
