So does the Stolen Valor Act matter?

| February 6, 2009

1stCAVAbnRVN sends along a couple of articles about James E. Scales, an administrator at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He was masquerading as a hero instead of just accepting his own career as something heroic. Here’s what he got busted on;

Lie – Awarded 3 Purple Hearts
Proof – Military records obtained from the National Archives and Records Administration show he was never awarded a Purple Heart.

Lie – Served in Vietnam
Proof – Military records obtained from the U.S. Army Human Resources Command shows that Scales never served in Vietnam.

Lie – Also served in Bosnia, Honduras, Panama, the Persian Gulf and Iraq
Proof – Military records obtained from the U.S. Army Human Resources Command shows that during Scales career, he was stationed in Germany, Kansas and Wisconson, only.

Lie – Father and uncles died in the Korean War
Proof – A check of a database with names of those killed or missing in action in the Korean War, found no one with the last name of Scales.
[…]
Here’s a look at the discrepancies on James Scales’s uniform:
1) The uniform shows he’s a colonel… he actually retired as a Lt. Colonel.
2) It has jump wings… but records show he never graduated from an airborne training course.
3) The uniform has a combat infantry badge… but records show he never served in combat.
4) There is a Korean Presidential U.N. citation… records show he never served in Korea.
5) An Army Good Conduct Medal is on the uniform… but to receive that medal, requires that an individual have 3 years enlisted service… but records show Scales entered the U.S. Army in 1970, the same year he went through the Infantry Officer Basic Course.

Yeah, pretty slimy, isn’t it. This clown was so foolish, that he didn’t bother to look at the AR 670-1 before slapping the phony shit on his uniform;

I guess he thought the CIB would look good next to that Transportation branch brass.

Well, you’d think the Southern Illinois University Carbondale would be eager to unload this piece of shit, wouldn’t you? Hardly.

“It’s not that the university is not concerned about the issues or concerned about Dr. Scales, but at this point it’s just accusations and we want to be fair to everyone involved,” [Larry Dietz, vice chancellor for student affairs] said.

Apparently, pictures of Scales wearing the PX bling and actual National Archives records aren’t enough to fire this fool – this stupid fool. A fricken Light Colonel doing this stuff, for Pete’s sake.

By the way, Scales was busted by Douglas Sterner, who runs Home of Heroes. Stop by and give him some man-hugs.

Updated Sporkmaster: Also in this photo he is wearing aSchützenschnur that Officers are not able to wear.

The fool ought to be made to run a gauntlet of Honorably discharged veterans, if you are a vet in the gauntlet & have EARNED a medal or skill badge said fool has worn falsely, you get one punch for whatever you rate!

I thought the CIB went over things like jump wings… I don’t have either, but I’ve seen a few.

I sent this to the University board ( mistyw@siu.edu ) :

“Ma’am,

I have recently been made aware of a liar and fraud in the employ of your University.

James E. Scales is currently in violation of State and Federal law, SI University ethics, and accepted moral behavior. His masquerading as a full Colonel in the United States Army (he achieved Light Colonel, one grade below that of full Colonel), including the wearing of many valorous medals and awards he did NOT earn, in conflicts he was NOT a part of, is an abomination. His wearing of the Purple Heart is a slap in the face of every actually wounded and crippled American Warrior, dating back to the Revolutionary War.

This man has not only embarrased your University, but has spit on the graves of those men that truly have earned their medals and honors in blood and sacrifice, in service to the United States.

I ask that he be thoroughly investigated, and removed from the staff of Southern Illinois University.

Thanks Cav…we all need to go after these phonies, and your making this info available is much appreciated. Thanks also SSgt Medzyk for letting the university know your feelings on this. FYI–I’m an old Cav man (RVN) myself. If you still have a copy of the 1997 1st Cav Calendar lying around, you’ll see my picture on the cover. The guy behind me in that photo is Sp4 Jaime Pacheco, another Cav Man who was KIA in May ’72. He never got to wear his PH (or Silver Star).
Thanks again. We MUST go after these phonies, not for ourselves, but for our comrades whose Purple Hearts (and other awards) were earned at the cost of their lives.

Jonn-

Have you sent this to B5? I think he’d like this.

Jonn wrote: Thanks for the suggestion – those guys are always over here putting their feet on the furniture, wiping their hands on the drapes, getting their cigar ashes all over the my new carpet. Lord help me if I leave the liquor cabinet unlocked.

Of all the things that happen out there, this is the one thing that I just truly do not understand. Is it not sufficient to know that, when your country called, you stepped forward and were not found wanting?

That you stood up when others would not, that you took a binding oath to risk your very life if needs be to defend out Constitution, that you served honorably.. these things are not enough?

Those who serve are amongst a most exclusive fraternity. they belong to a group whose ranks epitomize the ideals this nation was built upon.

Duty. Honour. Country.

There are many men who will never have that much in their own life, yet these men like this Lt Colonel seem to somehow need more.

I will never understand it. Never.

I am proud of my service. However, I am as honored to be in the company of clerks and cooks, as any other, because they too took the same oath we all did, and as it is said, they also serve, who stand and wait.

But, yeah. these guys just baffle me with their stolen valour.

Thanks for posting Jonn. And darn good research Doug. It’s hard to believe this wannabe is counseling students. If the university doesn’t fire him, then his superiors should be fired too.By the govenor if it takes it.

Got this back this afternoon:

“Mr. Medzyk,

I am in receipt of your note below and will pass it on to those folks who
are working with this issue at SIU Carbondale.

Thank you for providing your feedback.

Misty Whittington
Executive Secretary of the Board
Southern Illinois University”

Well, we’ll see.

Nice job, I wonder why people do this. I do not have much in the nature of ribbions (3 as of this date) But I figure that if I can walk away with at least a 2 tier ribbion rack that it is something to be proud of.
