Tuesday morning feel good stories

| September 5, 2017

From Ladson, South Carolina;

A man forced his way into a residence and was shot by an occupant of the home, according to initial reports by deputies.

The suspect was transported to Trident Hospital to be treated for a gunshot wound to the upper body.

From Phoenix, Arizona;

“Four armed suspects broke into the home. During the home invasion, the homeowner was able to get a rifle,” Rothschild said. “He began shooting at the suspects.”

He hit one of them who was later found dead in the street by responding officers. He had no identification on him so it took a long time to identify him.

Four crooks versus one good guy is a good reason why folks own those “scary” rifles: they work.

Or more simply: “Wrong house”

26Limabeans

“During the home invasion, the homeowner was able to get a rifle”

Handguns are nice to have on the nightstand but
an Armalite carbine hanging behind the door is a whole different story.

Docduracoat

While an Armalite rifle is an excellent choice for home defense, the article makes no mention what kind of rifle, what caliber, or how many shots fired.
Inside your home is where a bull pup like a Steyr Aug or a Tavor would really shine
I recently picked up a CZ scorpion and put the folding stock on it and it is unbelievable how light and handy it is especially with a laser sighting system
30 rounds of 147 grain hollowpoint 9 mm should show them the error of their ways
Still waiting on the stamp for the Osprey 9 silencer

Big John

I never saw or heard of a “silencer”.

Carlton G. Long

“He had no identification on him so it took a long time to identify him.”

Hard-hitting journalism like this inspires us all.

CCO

Even for five o’clock in the morning, this sentence seems to lack a certain something.

Note to all Bad Guys, including the Joker: make sure you have your ID on you so the pohlease can ID you to yo’ baby momma.

Perry Gaskill

The story is pretty much FUBAR on multiple levels. Starting with the headline:

“Police looking for suspects who left friend for dead”

The term “left for dead” normally applies when the bad guys leave one of their own to die, but that person actually survives.

“Investigators are really struggling with this one.

‘This is a hard case,’ Phoenix Police Sgt. Jamie Rothschild said.”

The half-ass attempt at a feature lede, and the short Rothschild quote that follows are redundant and useless without an explainer. Cops are always struggling with cases. Sometimes what makes a crime bigger news is when the whodunit circumstances are more difficult than normal. Which are what in this instance?

Maybe it’s just me, but I’m also having a hard time understanding if the dead guy was actually identified or not. It’s been my experience that it’s usually best for a reporter to break things down Barney style. Either there has been no identification, or the dead guy has been ID’d. If the latter is true, the cops might or might not release the name and details depending. Which might raise an additional question such as why the identity is being withheld.

There is a certain 2nd grade-school level of reportage going on here. These reporters seem to be simply copying off the police reports. I guess they aren’t told to juice it up any more, or maybe they lack the skill sets?

Don’t know. But “took a long time to identify….” is a clumsy way to say the po-po won’t tell us anything. Could be a means of avoiding the PC crowd’s hassles, too.

UpNorth

Any more? I’ve been out of law enforcement for 20 years, and, with the exception of one really good police beat reporter, they all aspired to reach “a certain 2nd grade-school level of reportage”. They would manage to screw up a story, when they had the reports right in front of them.

That’s no shyt…I worked one case, read about it in the paper and didn’t recognize it as my own case LOL…low intelligence, poor english skills, limited understanding, poor comprehension of the language, all prerequisites to be media writers, tv or news…ESPECIALLY, in our little rag of a newspaper!

Graybeard

We could suggest that having one’s prison number tattooed on one’s forearm is the latest and coolest prison tattoo fad – better than the teardrops.

You folks will enjoy seeing this classic advertisement from an old issue of “LADIES LIFE AND HOUSEHOLD” magazine (but I don’t know the month or year).

Bought a .38 Det. special in mint condition from upstairs neighbor for a hundred bucks. Not bad but loss of power in right hand due to rotator cuff surgery last Aug. 31st makes it a hard trigger pull. Started using one of those spring hand grip gizmos but it is a start and stop excersize routine. Anyone out there buy the new Springfield XD-E single stack .09MM. I carry the XDSC .40 double stack but with small hands, it’s a little rough on the grip.

Joseph Williams

Jeff, have you considered changing the handgrips ? You can get slimer grips for your >40. Joe

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

Joe, the grip is 1.20 and no optional grips to make it smaller, only optional textured to enlarge the grip I see for sale.

A good way to rebuild the hand strength is “Power Putty”. I used it after i had surgery to repair a wrist.

I -highly- recommend this stuff. I much prefer it to various spring-based gadgets. You can blend different grades of it to get exactly what you want. (Keep it in a sealed container or it can become overly hard)

Of course, check with your physical therapist first, etc, etc.

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

Thanks for the heads up on that putty 11bravo. Now I’m sweating out Irma down here in West Delray Beach, Fl.

I think that the year was around 1955, 1956 in the magazine due to the hairstyle and clothing. Could be wrong though. I tried pasting the well dressed lady shopper in a Walmart store up in Alaska with an open carry .45 Auto on her hip but I could not get the pic on this field.

Claw

Colt Cobra .38 Snubnose. First introduced in 1950.

Jack Ruby’s weapon of choice when belt buckle to belt buckle with Oswald.

Rama Lama Ding Dong.

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

The Edsels,Rama Lama Ding Dong released in 1958 but did not make the charts. re released in 1961 on twin and made the charts.

A little while ago, the Certified Nursing Assistant was here cleaning my apartment, and I showed her that poster.

She was amused, but said she wouldn’t use a gun that small.

She prefers a larger caliber.

This is Vernal, Utah, where everybody is armed.

Foxbat40

Those scary black rifles sure seem to be good at scaring off the bad guys. Who says they don’t have a use?

Did anyone see this news report at the DRUDGE REPORT web site?

Be sure and read the comments that were posted in response.
