About Guam Today…This Morning

Guam Island AH2/AB2RF

This is the latest bit regarding ND:tBF’s threats toward Guam: North Korea dials back.   I guess a little verbal ‘fire and fury’ from someone taller than Fatty Kim da T’ird is making him do something he usually doesn’t do: T-H-I-N-K. Or maybe wet his drawers. He is now ‘holding off’ on his plan to shoot-shoot-shoot-bang-bang at our Pacific territory, the island of Guam.  http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-40931775

Okay, sure he is. He has other tricks up his sleeve. He never wastes an opportunity to get attention, does he? He’ll probably go back to scaring Japan, because it’s closer, but don’t turn your back on the little bugger. He’s a treacherous as a cottonmouth.

However, this news gives the markets a chance to breathe deeply and open trending up this Tuesday morning.   http://www.marketwatch.com/story/us-stocks-eye-opening-gains-as-north-korea-pulls-back-on-guam-threat-2017-08-15

Meantime, on the peaceful island of Guam, a U.S. territory with a bevy of US military bases and lots of US military personnel, including those 1500 additional Marines that did not make the island tip over, Guam Foodie has a wealth of stuff for you to enjoy, including links to the Spam Museum.  http://www.guampdn.com/lifestyle/guam-foodie/

Guam’s online news  http://www.guampdn.com/news/   reports no uptick in activity at the military bases: http://www.guampdn.com/story/news/2017/08/14/residents-near-guams-military-bases-see-no-spike-activity/563875001/

Guamaians themselves assure us that they are well-prepared for any eventuality regarding Norkiland. http://www.guampdn.com/story/news/2017/08/14/officials-send-message-guam-well-prepared-crisis/563877001/

If you’re interested , top round steak is currently $4.49/lb at Island Fresh, if you want to go shopping. That’s less than it costs here. Here’s the Facebook link for Island Fresh:  https://www.facebook.com/islandfreshgu/

But remember to pick up a few cans of Spam, too. The Guamaians have a wealth of recipes for Spam.  Try Annie’s Chamorro Spam recipe for Fried Rice with Spam, bacon and chorizos Españot.  I have to give that a shot. I love a good hash recipe.  http://www.annieschamorrokitchen.com/spam/ If you try it, give her a nod, please.  If you’ve been stationed at Guam, please let us know. Give us a flashback report, willya?

I have never seen Gun Beach, except in WWII films. http://theguamguide.com/gun-beach/  It seems to be a top spot for snorkelers. There is a marine preserve full of exotic fish and other shallow depth critters.

Might be a good place to retire to. I’ll leave the light on for you.

Guam is beautiful, isn’t it? I’ve only been there in pictures, too…

The thing that disgusts me about this is the MSM doing everything they can to blame this whole situation on Trump. That just boggles my mind.

Pennywise the Clown

President Trump could pass gas while on an overseas trip and the lamestream liberal MSM would accuse him of Chemical Warfare.

Been there…IT IS BEAUTIFUL..or was, that was 50 years ago…you could leave your VW on the front lawn and in a week couldn’t find it for the growth lol

*sigh*….”Spam”…..I used to see the Spam display every year at the Minnesota state fair….and, after growing up in the “Land Of Spam”, I found it very ironic that I was stationed in Hawaii…..one of the largest consumers of Spam, right behind Guam.

I have found that the secret to properly cooking Spam is to use lots of olive oil…..this way it slides out of the cooking pan and into the trash can with minimal fuss.

I visited the Spam museum in Austin, Minnesota as a young guy once.

Once you have seen a Spam Sculpture of Bill Clinton, it changes you forever…..and not in a good way.

Spam cooked on a cheap propane grill, cheap college food!

Don’t forget Samoa..they are the champion spam lovers lol

Combat Historian

Watch out for the brown tree snakes, an invasive species accidentally brought over from the Solomon Islands during WWII. There are millions of them on Guam and they have already wiped out the native bird life. They hang from trees and bite you in the face and neck as you walk below them; they are mildly to moderately poisonous, and a bite will put you in the hospital for several days. They are a bigger threat to Guam than Norki ICBMs, the island tipping over, or even (gasp!) climate change…

In other news, you have to start reading the link text and start asking yourself, What the flying monkey fuck? This can’t be real but yes, yes it is.

They even offer video.

HOW ABOUT A NICE GAME OF CHESS. . .

Silentium Est Aureum

When I was there, one of the auto dealerships had a contest where the person who brought in the most LIVE snakes would win a new truck.

The winning number? They stopped counting at 25,000.

just some feller

Well I’m disappointed! I expected to see a mouse with a parachute:

AIRBORNE!

OK it’s not as exotic as you’d believe, but here are the little dead poisoned buggers dropping FROM DA CHOPPAH (Lol) in little cardboard canisters and streamers to get caught in trees.

Not exactly 82nd or 101st stuff…

I went there with the 31st MEU. It was very beautiful and the fact that people spoke English was convenient compared to all of the other places we went. It did seem pretty small to me. Okinawa is still small, but big enough. Unfortunately, I only had about 3 days there so I couldn’t do snorkeling or diving.

Stationed there and did several upkeeps during my various Westpacs.

Diving is great, surfing not so much. Always interesting having Super Bowl MONDAY off, because the game isn’t on until 7-8 am or so.

Sadly, Andy’s Hut is no more. What Typhoon Omar didn’t destroy, the quake a year later took care of.

“Super Bowl MONDAY”

Ha, ha! Very familiar with that!

A Proud Infidel®™

Super Bowl Monday, did that in Korea.

Silentium Est Aureum

Oh, and because of the snakes, the remaining birds have become so aggressive they dive bomb ANYTHING coming near their nesting areas, to the point you had to take a badminton racquet with you, lest you come back with a bleeding scalp.

WAR STORY ALERT: During Nam when I was at the Hickam O Club, we were able to avert a major disaster on Guam saving who knows how many Buff aircrew from a horrible fate. Seems Guam and their O Club in particular ran out of tonic mix. The Lt. Col. had me load a C-135 with a truckload of tonic and send it on its way. I know it hurt to use an AF aircraft for anything other than Coors going that way and ceramic elephants on the return but someone had to do it.

Club Manager

Yup and have the coveted NDSM to show for it.

SFC D

Sometime in 67, the aforementioned O club on Guam ran out of beer. My Pa made an emergency beer run on his trusty Vespa. Unfortunately, the door was narrower than a Vespa loaded with several cases of beer. Apparently, LtCol D and the beer made a short but spectacular flight into the club, followed by a very rough landing.

YUM!!!! SPAM! 🙂 OK Im a sick puppy. I like SPAM and I didn’t grow up on a pacific island or in Minnesota.

I always wondered why C-Rations didn’t include SPAM or why the Army didn’t just cram three cans o’ SPAM into those cardboard boxes. Instead of coming up with the initial horror that was an MRE; why didn’t they just give us SPAM and 10 packets of freeze dried coffee. 🙂
(Oh yeah and more bottles of the Tabasco Sauce for you folks with cast iron stomachs!)

Never been to Guam, but the folks I have met from there ALL were very cool folks.

Roger in Republic

While hiking the Pacific Crest Trail I roasted slices of Spam over the campfire. Unfortunately I used a green fir bough as a stick and thereby infused my Spam with the essence of turpentine. Yuck! It was years before I could look at Spam without reliving that taste.

I call DIBS on the first can of jalapeno Spam!

Silentium Est Aureum

Kelaguen. Trust me, it’s worth it.

I expect PH-2 to come up with a recipe before the next WOT.

Feral kitties have decimated the snake population in Australia. Vicious creatures; they pounce on the snake and pin its head down with its front claws while literally shredding the snake to death with both its hind claws. Cool to see!
