Norks back off threats to Guam
Fox News reports that Kim Jong Un backed away from his threats to nuke Guam.
Kim Jong Un’s remarks came as he made his first public appearance in nearly two weeks, inspecting his army and examining missile plans, the official state media arm, KCNA, reported, according to Reuters. But the leader also tempered his recent fiery rhetoric, appearing to step back from the brink in an intensifying war of words between United States and North Korean leaders.
“He said that if the Yankees persist in their extremely dangerous reckless actions on the Korean peninsula and in its vicinity, testing the self-restraint of the DPRK, the latter will make an important decision as it already declared,” KCNA reported.
Defense Secretary James Mattis had threatened that in the event of a direct threat to the US it would be “game on”. His remark came after President Trump described the US response as “fire and fury”. The Chinese had also indicated they would not support the North Koreans if they initiated an attack.
The Associated Press reports that a THAAD missile defense system has been deployed to Guam since 2013 – I think that was before January 20th, 2017.

He gets some street cred among the anti-American folks he wants to impress, and learned a little more detail of when is ‘too much’, without crossing the ‘aw shit’ line. I must disagree. I think Kim was surprised that Trump met him face to face (as it were) in the Street Theater Olympics. Basically Trump was saying “nigga, please.” Kim didn’t know how to respond to that, so he backed off while saving face.

My guess is that there are back-channel negotiations going on (Trump is the premier deal-maker, no?) with the end result that North Korea gives up the nuke program for the promise of no attempts at regime change.

Trump made a threat that if North Korea made a verbal threat he would retaliate with fire and fury.
North Korea responded with another verbal threat.
The Trump administration backed off their threat to retaliate.
North Korea backed off their threat to launch missiles into the waters near Guam.
However, now we are much closer to hostilities before Trump made his threat.
North Korea nuclear posture is in the exact same state, except they are even MORE unlikely than ever to stop pursuing nuclear weapons since having one capable of reaching the US is the ultimate deterrent.
So what has Trump accomplished.
Name one damn thing. Trying to claim North Korea backed off a threat that did not exist until Trump made his bombastic threat is not an accomplishment.
And it is false to claim it is an accomplishment that North Korea backed off their threat because they backed off the overwhelming majority of threats they have ever made.
All this whole exchange had done is undermined US credibility, destabilized markets, and further convinced North Korea that they need nuclear weapons.
Trying to spin this as a win for Trump or the US is complete nonsense.
