CMP reunites Pat Farmer with his rifle

| July 17, 2017

Dave sends us a link from Buckeye Firearms Association which tells the story of Pat Farmer who, thanks to the efforts of the Civilian Marksmanship Program, was reunited with his basic training M-1 Garand #4305638 56 years after he left the rifle in basic training. It seems like most of us, he kept every little piece of paper from his Marine Corps years and he found a hand receipt for the rifle in his box of stuff. He contacted the CMP to see if it had passed through through their hands;

In October 2013, he contacted CMP customer service and was put in touch with Jennifer Smith, the serial number/inventory clerk. To Pat’s amazement, he soon learned that the very same rifle he used in boot camp was being stored at the CMP facility, but was still Army property. Unable to distribute the rifle until the Army formally turned it over to the CMP, Jennifer informed Pat that it may take some time until he’s able to see his rifle again.
[…]

Then, a little over three years later on March 20, 2017, true to her word, Jennifer contacted Pat and told him the Army had released more rifles – including his.

After a short period of processing and grading, on April 24, 2017, Jennifer contacted Pat again, asking him to send in his paperwork so he could, after 56 years, be issued his rifle again.

Finally – a few weeks later, on May 8, 2017, Pat was reunited with M1 Garand #4305638.

Mr Farmer says he found a piece of tape in the trigger guard marked with his name and 500 yard “dope” after all these years. He says that, after firing off a few rounds for old time’s sake, he’ll store it to pass on to his progeny.

That’s a hell of a story. Good to see it was maintained and he plans on passing it on.

So Korea wanted to return all the Garands they have in storage to America, they are American made and historic weapons, but the p.o.s. obozo said no! Maybe Trump will say “not yes, but HELL YES!!”

Not about to argue with Old Blood and Guts, and another great story. Thanks, Jonn!

I’ll never get to buy the M16A2 I used in basic. Good for him.

OC

My thoughts exactly Andy.
But one can dream……..

Wow that is an awesome story. I wonder if there is anyway I could find out the serial number of the rifle my Grand Father used during World War II or during the Korean War.

WOW, VERY cool!!! NOW IF ONLY I could be reunited with EITHER of the M60s I was assigned while on AD I’d be a very happy camper!!!

Mayhem

I wish I could be reunited with the P-38 can opener I was issued. It took me awhile just to figure out how to put the thing into “operational mode”. I never claimed to be the sharpest crayon in the box.

Claw

Brand new P-38s/P-51s and genuine issue brown mess hall coffee cups and 10oz tumblers are available for issue here at Stately Claw Manor. Just stop by anytime and inquire at the Supply Room door.

I had pleasure to shoot an m-1 garland at the range…relatively heavy firearm minimized recoil and the sights were, well, whoa! A pleasure to shoot and hope it gave him some pleasure to own again…beautiful weapon

Yep, I shot one in boot also, had a DI that had special uses for a garand, he would have us on the ground, toes in the sand, butt of the rifle down and us holding the forearm up in the air and keeping us in that position until we fell over…lol….he must have enjoyed that! We didn’t 😉

Hack Stone

Maybe I can be reunited with the shovel they issued me at the 29 Palms Horse Stable to shovel the shit while waiting for my class to pick up. No shit, there I was, knee deep in the shit…

The Other Whitey

Very cool!

I know what he’s thinking:

This is my rifle
There are many like it
But this one is mine…

Great story.

Wonder if I claim kin, I’d have a shot at getting it? All kidding aside it’s a great story though. I can’t imagine his delight.

M-1 Garand brings back memories. Norfolk Va. (shit City) NOB had the OKIE 3 berthed at pier 12 and I was on the honor guard to wait for the Comphibron 8 flag to come aboard so GM1 Smitty had us go thru a dry run inspection arms drill. Got the operating handle back ok but when I pushed the mag. follower down with my right thumb, I didn’t pull it out fast enough so all of you old time vets out there would know the old M-1 thumb deal. WOW did that smart and had some laughs out of it. By the way, did any of you squids or sea going bell hops ever see ADM. Mcain sr.’s pet alligator he brought on board in a wooden box when he visited the Gator ships.

I still have the weapons card (somewhere in a file box) for the .45 that I was issued at my first unit after Basic. Now that it looks like .45s will be going to the CMP I’m hoping for a similar story for me.

Dustoff

If I could have my M-16A1 from basic (Ft. Jackson, Tank Hill 1977). Upper and lower receiver had more play than I’ve seen since, but that was a sweet shooting weapon. BTW , that’s probably the only thing I want back from basic.

My first rifle qual was with the venerable M-1 on the old KD 1000 yard range. I rec’d my full share of “maggie’s drawers” at that distance.
