Brigadier General Wayne W. Grigsby Jr.; busted for inappropriate relationship

| June 23, 2017

The Washington Post reports that the Army fired the former 1st Infantry Division commander from his job as Fort Riley’s post commander, former-Major General, now-Brigadier General Wayne W. Grigsby Jr. for engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a subordinate;

…investigators found that he had called and texted a female captain more than 850 times over 10 months and was spending time at her home, according to Army documents obtained by The Washington Post.

Grigsby is the sixth general in the past year whom the Army has punished for sexual misconduct or improper interactions with women. Although Army leaders have been reluctant to talk publicly about the issue, the service in December appointed a three-star general to lead a review of its general-officer corps.

Apparently, Grigsby’s marital infidelity triggered a “flurry” of reports from subordinates to the Army and his wife had been on Twitter discussing the relationship – there’s a reason they call it “social media”.

Grigsby’s chief of staff and command sergeant major confronted him and “told him flat out that there was a very serious perception out there; ‘people are talking about it, you need to stop,’ ” according to the report.

Others told investigators that the relationship distracted Grigsby from his unit’s upcoming deployment to Iraq. One soldier said it “was affecting careers. He did not want it to get to the point where it was affecting lives,” the report stated.

Well, he’s flying a desk somewhere with one less star on his collar and he’s scheduled to retire in August.

So your safety briefing will last an extra half hour this weekend, and this is why.

Thanks to Chief Tango for the link.

Commissioner Wretched

I had always believed that people chosen to wear stars were somehow more discerning … more professional … more able.

Well, it appears that many of them aren’t.

Congratulations, General. Hope the weight of one less star on your shoulder (and in your retirement check) is worth all the trouble you’re having.

O-4E

Not to mention the wife getting at least half of that pension

SSGUSARMY

No matter what he’s going through right now, he’s still a good man and I was proud to serve with him.

11B-Mailclerk

The problem, Sergeant, is that it is -very- hard to order PVT Snuffy to restrain his impulses for indiciplined behavior, if one is incapable of self-restraint oneself, and if one makes a point demonstrating that lack so publicly and outrageously.

For an Army to function, there must be Discipline. For Discipline to exist, there must be Leadership. For Leadership to exist, there must be Examples.
One can choose to be a Good Example, or Bad Example.

No one gets a free pass. The higher the rank, the higher the expectation.

Those who know the man can certainly commiserate the loss of a cherished colleague. But there can be -no- doubt that this was self-inflicted.

David Atkinson

The most well put reasoning I have ever seen on a thread discussing General Officer misconduct Mailclerk.

That is concise, lucid and easy to digest. I am definitely using that again….

Poontang and alcohol. Career killers.

CWO5USMC

So true Don. As the “old guy” in my MOS, I have for years talked to my brand new WOs at their initial MOS training about the 4 Bs that will kill their career.
1. Booze
2. Bucks
3. Bootie
4. Blow

Most of them listen, but every so often a promising career is cut short due to jack assery.

Jay

I had a buddy get selected for WO and made it damn near to the end of WOBC….and got nailed on a DUI. Old Corps would let you revert to your prior-enlisted rank. He rode a desk for about a year in Q-town and went home.

club manager

Well spoken chief, but the question is how many listened? Hopefully most. These days you may want to add a fifth, “boys”. The only good news about the GO throwing his career away is it was a female captain.

CW2, USA Ret

Don

I was a lowly airwing pog Sgt. We expected assbaggery from people like me and below. But for a some O’s it was as if as soon as they drove out the gate they thought they were invisible. When LCpl’s are coming to you with “You won’t believe who I saw burnin one last night…”, you get the picture. (Early to late ’70s time frame.)

The Old Maj

Yep.

If an officer makes it to Colonel he becomes much more studly and good looking than he was at previous ranks. Certain women are suddenly interested in him that never would have given him the time of day when he was a lowly lieutenant.

The rank on his chest has absolutely nothing to with it at all….. They really need to give them a new handbook about how life works when they get an eagle.

Another Old MAJ

WOW, someohow you know exactly what the circumstances were behind this relationship. Incredible!

I wonder how much worse of a Death Sentence something like that would be to the careers of junior ranking Officers as well as NCOs? Different spanks for different ranks!

“So your safety briefing will last an extra half hour this weekend, and this is why.”

NOT JUST the Weekend Safety Briefing, I’m sure THIS will add at least a half hour to 45 minutes to their usual SHARP Death by Power Point Briefing!

GaaaaaaaaaawwDAMMIT!!

PFM

Jesus, do they need to add six months to CGSC and the War College curriculum entitled “Morality, Discretion and How Not To Be A Dumbass”?

Martinjmpr

It doesn’t take six months to say “keep it in your pants.” 😉

We wonder why high ranking personnel like this do what they do but obviously, like the residents of our prisons, these people figure they won’t get caught.

As with espionage, we only know about the ones who get caught. For all we know there’s a lot of this going on that the perpetrators DO get away with, because they AREN’T stupid.

Thunderstixx

No, but six months of Powerpoint death threats should clear up the propensity for trashing ones career with the aforementioned 4B’s…

PFM

Oh, and that Captain needs a boot in the ass, too.

Forest Green

Hey, she’st trying to get a head.

Jonp

No, he was

MSG Eric

No, she’s trying to give a head to get ahead. Obviously it didn’t work out so well.

HMC Ret

PFM: She’ll take her, uh, punishment, uh, elsewhere.

How did two ostensibly intelligent people get together and decide this would be a good idea that would fly under the radar? What was ‘in it’ for her? Early promotion?

Two morons bumping in the night. I like it that his wife threw him under the bus. Score!!

Graybeard

IMHO, loss of 1 star is insufficient.
Bust him to LT, make him spend the rest of his abbreviated career leading PT.

Put a hit like that on his retirement and others may just pay attention.

Carlton G. Long

Make him a 2LT, and have him serve as VD Control Officer, Morale Officer, and “Motorcycle Mentor” … the female sounds like another Paula Fivehead (Patraeus’ b***h)

Graybeard

I’ll vote for that.

David Atkinson

I’d say make him the Bugs and Gas Officer. But that’s a slap and discredit to bugs and gas Officers.

David Atkinson

One last thought. I wonder how long it took him to clear post.

Wilted Willy

Keep your pecker in your pants, don’t let the little head out smart your big head! My daddy always told me, it doesn’t matter where you get your appetite as long as you eat at home! If you don’t like your wife, then for fuck sake, get a divorce! Then you can chase pussy til your hearts content!!!

Graybeard

“Keep your pecker in your pants” would save a lot of guys a lot of grief.

College boys accused of rape by a girl who was quite willing.
Bill Cosby and Blow-job Wille.
General Officers.

But nope – lack of self-control get’s them screwed.

Sapper3307

Will he loss a retirement paygrade or slide out with full retirement?

MSG Eric

If they only dropped him to 1-star then he’ll get a 1-star retirement if the determination boards decide that he won’t get his 2-star pension. Which, he won’t from the sound of it.

ChipNASA

Dumbass.

HMCS(FMF) ret

His CoS and CSM are telling him it’s an issue and he still carried on???? Fucking stupid… not a lick of common sense – that “young thang” must have drove him crazee. Here’s hoping the missus divorces his ass and cuts his shit off and feeds it to the mangy dogs in the street.

“Peace of mind before piece of ass”

SFC D

CoS and CSM both need to have their pee-pees wacked for not doing anything beyond telling him “it’s an issue”. No balls in that command, no integrity.

Eden

Perhaps they’re the reason it came to the attention of the Powers that Be.

Club Manager

I turned in the O-5 I worked for in the Wiesbaden Military Community who tried to screw my female entertainers using his position as my boss to force them. Said he would not let me book them into his clubs. I went to the Commander after the O-5’s wife kept calling my house looking for him because he was out with me checking my clubs. The reward is I was transferred across the river to Mainz Military Community and this asshole was promoted to O-6 and lived happily ever after abusing his authority.

Carlton G. Long

That sucks, but for what it’s worth, you at least can have a clear conscience.

Another Old MAJ

Too bad you didn’t make it more public at a much higher level.

SnappyDan

I was a rifle platoon leader in the 1/187th Inf in Panama at the same time as Wayne. I was at his bachelor party and I can tell you it was one hell of a bachelor party! His best man had Polaroids of him and they dumped him naked on Horoko golf course. He was always a mujeriego!

Loach

Sex is punished, incompetence rewarded. I wonder how WWII would have turned out if they kicked out every general who slept around? Ike, Patton, Bradley…

Eden

Sleeping around is bad enough. I’m pretty sure that Ike, Patton, and Bradley didn’t sleep with a subordinate.

Hondo

I’m pretty sure you’re correct about Patton and Bradley, Eden. About Ike, maybe not.

The rumors about Ike were that he was sleeping with his driver and personal secretary, Kay Summersby – who was an enlisted member of the UK Mechanized Transport Corps, a former English model and movie extra, and was absolutely drop-dead gorgeous. That kinda sounds like a senior/subordinate relationship to me.

Not defending this guy or anyone else who puts “Wee Willie” where it doesn’t belong. But sometimes even great men (and women) have lapses in judgement.

MSG Eric

But its okay, she was British and from another zip code…

F16 C/C

Patton was boffing his neice.

Hondo

True – a niece by marriage who was a Boston socialite and an adult a Red Cross worker during World War II. And MacArthur at one point was reputedly doing the horizontal mambo with a young actress from the Philippines while Army Chief of Staff. But I’m pretty sure neither of those individuals was ever (a) in the military and (b) assigned duties working directly for either Patton or MacArthur.

A general’s driver and private secretary is the general’s direct subordinate. That kind of relationship is a rather different situation.

All three relationships were IMO wrong. But I have far less issue with a May-November dalliance that does not involve a subordinate than I do with someone carrying on with a direct military subordinate, regardless of their ages.

Ex-PH2

I will never understand why your brains go flying out the window the minute you guys see a tight ass in a tight skirt.

I guess we girls are just wired differently, although that overly “ambitious” captain is just about that bad. I sure do hope she had a good ride.

Martinjmpr

will never understand why your brains go flying out the window the minute you guys see a tight ass in a tight skirt.

Testosterone. It’s a blessing and a curse. 😉

Jonp

Him too. If that wasnt the most expensive one in his life i dont know how he could top it. Men are wired differently. From puberty men are hard wired to procreate with as many women as possible. Being a human being we over ride that animaliatic urge. Its what makes us different from other animals unable to control those instincts. Well, most of us anyways

Graybeard

Well, it used to be common knowledge that men are visually stimulated by attractive women.

In a way, it is still common knowledge, although a lot of that is denied by the feminazis. But all one must do is peruse the magazines targeted at women (or the “romantic fantasy” genre) to see evidence that women know that men are visually stimulated by attractive women, and enjoy being the subject of that phenomenon.

What I have never quite understood is why some very beautiful young ladies were attracted to dirtbags who are ugly as twice-warmed sin.

Ex-PH2

Well, GB, it’s just that at this idiot’s level of ‘superiority’ (and I use that word advisedly) I expect better behavior.

I am not denying that it happens.

Perhaps the answer is right in front of us, and we just don’t see it right now.

Graybeard

Oh, most definitely we expect better behavior.

One of the character traits we admire most in others is self control – even when we ourselves have none, as some wag has remarked.

Most seriously, self control, or self-discipline, is a defining characteristic of a mature human being. We try to instill it in our children (or ought to) and practice it ourselves.

One of the most puzzling things I’ve ever had said to me was when a co-worker said that when she first met me (at some church event) that I scared her – because of my self-control.

(Now, what my wife’s take on that would be is another matter. But she sees right through me.)

But for those in charge – especially in a military endeavor – we demand self-discipline at a higher level. And the higher level one is, the higher level of self-control one ought to have. One reason so many people still admire Robert E. Lee. His self-discipline is legendary.

Ex-PH2

Ah! Self control…. Greed and lust do have a strange effect on people. It ruins the lives of others around them. Poor Ophelia, for example….

Graybeard

Ophelia is a fascinating study as a tragic character, as is Hamlet himself. Shylock is an overlooked character of some depth and amazing in the sympathetic treatment given in his character development.

Unfortunately, most HS and college kids cannot understand any of them.

John Robert Mallernee

My hearing is bad, so even when I turned up the volume, I still couldn’t understand what was being said, and there were no English subtitles for the hearing impaired as an option.

I hear people speaking, but the sounds are all slurred and blurry.

Rep For Vets in Florida is attempting to get me Service Connection for my significant hearing loss and tinnitus, but so far, no luck.

MSG Eric

I would say there is an equivalent percentage of women who have the same issue and can’t keep their legs closed. They might have different reasons for it, but they are still more than willing.

Though, when it comes to being caught, they will so often play the victim card and say it was the man’s fault. And/or play the EO card when they are potentially getting in trouble. And so on…..

It’d be great to not have to deal with this kind of stuff, but it will always happen. Whether they get caught for it is another story.

Graybeard

You mean like that ‘contestant’ on that ‘reality’ tv show who got soused and tried to seduce a fellow contestant, even putting her wazziz into his face – then claimed she could not have given consent ’cause she was drunk?
Of course, he was so soused he ‘couldn’t get it up’… but she said he was the instigator.

But they say that never happens.

OWB

Idiot. It just isn’t all that difficult to conduct discrete relationships. Folks who insist on flaunting their indiscretions have problems way beyond an unwillingness to keep it in their pants.

Eden

People like that believe they’re untouchable, so they have no motivation to be discreet.

MSG Eric

I’d bet he was doing this kind of thing since at least O-5.

As a Captain and Major, he was dreaming about the day he’d get to do it.

Another Old MAJ

Agreed. If both of them wanted to keep it discreet, they could have got burn phones, limited their communications to NON-personal and NON-overnmental devices, could have met remotely, farther away from Ft. Riley than in Manhattan, KS. Just not all that smart.

JimV

At least he wasn’t doing it with a male Captain.

Thunderstixx

He would have been promoted for that…

When he made BG the first time around:

Grigsby and his wife Cynthia have five children and one grandson.

Grigsby thanked the members of his church in Leavenworth for their support during his time here.

“It really is about God, country — which is our Army — and my family. And that’s what really makes up a man,” Grigsby said. “And all those have to be in balance in order to lead the way you want to lead.”

I guess he forgot about all that after he made MG? …. or was that an ongoing “under cover affair”?

JSF

Dustoff

The WP article spoke of officers leading a “swinger lifestyle”. I immediately thought of Sylvester in “Its A Mad mad mad World”…..

MSgt (ret), USAF

My first Group Commander (Col) treated the female exec officers (Lt’s and Capts) like his private harem. He was tall, blond and drove a Z-28 (1984/85). He was married, but his old lady like to smoke pot, so she would take off and go party with the hippies in SF. He finally got busted when he tried his stupid shit on a Capt who didn’t play. She turned his ass in. He was relieved of command but ended up at Randolph AFB in SA and retired with full pay/benefits. Fucking asshole was a PIG. If it had been an NCO they would taken everything and then put their ass in jail. ALWAYS hated that double standard shit.

Eden

Fighter jock?

MSgt (ret), USAF

Not sure. He had the arrogance but he was over 6ft tall. All the fighter pilots I ever saw were vertically challenged.

Eden

If they’re over about 6’3″, they would lose their kneecaps if they ever had to punch out. And they won’t allow them in fighters if they’re over 6’5″.

Every fighter pilot I ever met acted as though he thought he was God’s gift to women. I went out with one, once. ONCE.

MSgt (ret), USAF

They are all swinging dicks. Never was attracted to that level of arrogance. Now a fine ass and broad shouldered enlisted Warrior, yes and yes😁

Former Dallas Cowboys DE Chad Hennings was about 6’6″, and he flew the A-10 in the early 90s. The A-10 was one of the very few fighter/attack aircraft that could accommodate someone so tall.

The problem is that we do it -backwards-.

Why are so many Wandering Dicks and Perambulating Pussies turning up now?

Is it something to do with eight years of slacker admin, or does it go back further?

So many rules in place already, and they seem to have no effect beyond another sleep-inducing episode of ‘Look but don’t touch’ lectures.

I shudder to think how much STD is prevalent in the military now. Icckkkk!

MSG Eric

Could be they are just getting caught more often and don’t understand preventing it from being a “distractor” to the mission.

If it distracts from the unit mission, it becomes a bigger problem. I think they are less concerned with that lately and that is why it comes up so much more.

I’d also bet there was way too many years where higher ups were more concerned about someone’s fighting ability than their personal weaknesses. Even if it effected the mission, it didn’t enough for a commander to be successful and wage war.

Though, I am very surprised at how many slid under the radar during the previous admin’s reduction of force.

Eden

It seems to me that more are being nailed for “dipping into the company ink”, rather than mere infidelity. I guess it comes with the territory with a higher percentage of women, where in previous generations, there were very few.
