Belated Birthday wishes to Richard Overton

| May 12, 2017

I guess that every year we’re blessed to count 111-years-old Richard Overton, the country’s oldest veteran still among us. His birthday was yesterday according to Fox News;

Richard Overton was born May 11, 1906 in Bastrop County. When he came of age, he served in the Pacific Theater from 1942 to 1945 as part of the all-black 1887th Engineer Aviation Battalion. After the war, he returned to Austin, and he has lived in the same home ever since.

While he has been honored by sitting presidents, governors and other global dignitaries for his distinguished service, most days he can be found sitting on his front porch proudly wearing his WWII Veteran baseball hat holding a cigar.

He gives credit to God for his longevity and continues to attend church, but he’s got a few tricks up his sleeve, too.

“I’ve been smoking cigars from when I was 18 years old, I’m still a smoking them, 12 a day,” Overton joked in 2014.

I’m looking forward to being on time for next year’s birthday.

Thanks to Mick for reminding us this year.

Now THAT’S a MAN!

THAT’S IT, time for a see-gar!!!

MSG Eric

Holy crap, I hope I’m that lively and functional at 60. Though, I seriously doubt it the way I’m going.

Good for him, happy birthday. Wow.

Graybeard

Just from a guy who’s beyond 60:
“Lively” and “functional” have different definitions here.

Happy Birthday, Richard Overton!

IDC SARC

Happy Birthday!

Salute!

Ex-PH2

Happy birthday, Mr. Overton. Keep smokin’ them stogies!

CWORet

Happy Birthday, young man!

Incidentally, if you google the man, there are all kinds of news stories and vids out there. The dude is hilarious. And he loves his cigars. And his guns. And booze. And women…

Commissioner Wretched

Many happy returns of the day (belated though they may be) to the oldest living member of the “Greatest Generation.” You are an example to all of us, sir.

Atkron

He looks damn good to be a centurion…doesn’t look his age at all.

IDC SARC

He’s actually earned his status as a Super Centenarian. Currently far less than 1% of the population will ever do so.

FuzeVT

I remember this guy from last year. Pretty awesome to be so lively at that age! I hope I’m in near that condition at 80!

Silentium Est Aureum

Living well is the best revenge.

And having done his time in the South Pacific during WWII, I’d say he’s entitles to a ltitle payback against the Grim Reaper.

Happy Birthday and many more, sir.

I love these stories, but only b/c I like to think about what people who have lived so long have seen. When Overton was a kid, the old timers were Civil War Veterans. And when he was born, if there was 100 year-old around, that person’s father and mother may have been alive and well in 1776. Amazing.

Devtun

Austin probably wasn’t a left wing Shangri-La back in Mr. Overton’s youth.

The Old Maj

You should look in to President Tyler’s living Grandchildren. That is not a misstatement. A man born in 1790 has two grandsons alive more than 220 years later.

Great video (from 2 years ago) about Mr. Overton at:

Happy Birthday, Sir!!!

Thunderstixx

Happy Birthday to the finest example of hell raising Veterans on Planet Earth !!!

Sparks

Happy Birthday Sir! May many more come your way.

HMC Ret

Think of the history he has seen, the stories he could tell. He can possibly recall the sinking of the Titanic, the beginning of WW1, the influenza pandemic of 1918-1919, the market crash followed by the Great Depression and so much more.

Thank you for your sacrifice, Sir, and happy birthday. Come back and visit us next year about this time.

The Old Maj

Maybe even less depressing stuff too.

Bill M

Happy Birthday!

Smoke one for me.

Maybe I need to enjoy a cigar more often? George Burns smoked multiple cigars every day and he only lived to see age 100. Mr. Overton has enjoyed a countless number of cigars and he’s hit age 111 so THAT’S IT, off to the Cigar Store I go!!! If I remember correctly, a past article on him said he enjoys Whiskey as well.

P. S. Once again, HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY, MR. OVERTON!

Happy Birthday! God bless you and you’re family, good sir!
