It’s who you know….

USAToday tells the story of Major General John Custer and his friend, Marty Dempsey who covered for Custer’s bad behavior;

The two-star general had an inappropriate relationship with a woman and lied to investigators about it, made his staff buy sexy clothing for her, subjected his underlings to racist and sexist emails and allowed himself to be photographed with another woman licking the medals on his formal dress uniform.

After the report was received and signed by top Army officials in September 2010, Maj. Gen. John Custer, commander of the Army’s intelligence school at Fort Huachuca, Ariz., faced public shaming and the loss of rank.

That’s when Gen. Martin Dempsey intervened. Dempsey, then the four-star in charge of the Army’s Training and Doctrine Command, struck from the record the substantiated finding of Custer’s inappropriate relationship. That left the board of three generals deciding Custer’s fate with two relatively minor charges and the letter of reprimand that Dempsey had issued.

So because of Dempsey’s intervention, Custer was able to retire with a $160,000/year pension.

Dempsey, a little more than a year later, ascended to the top of the uniformed military: chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. From that post, he would lament the ethical crisis in the military and the scourge of sexual assault and harassment. He and the chiefs vowed to root it out.

[…]

Stories in the last year by USA TODAY about the “swinging general,” Maj. Gen. David Haight, whose serial promiscuity killed his career, the demotion of the three-star adviser to the Defense secretary for drunken carousing at “gentleman’s clubs,” and the firing of another on the Joint Staff for adultery show that misconduct among senior officers has been anything but eradicated.

Come on-everyone has heard of General Custer’s famous fight at the “Battle of Little Big Horny.”

Tip your waitress, try the veal!

Combat Historian

Hey, Martin Dempsey, oboobi buttboy, you did a really really damn good job on wrecking the honor and integrity of our U.S. Armed Forces; I’m sure there’s a medal in here for you somewhere…

Ex-PH2

Integrity? I think the meaning has been removed from the dictionary.

desert

He was head of intelligence at Ft Huachuca? Guess thats the best the Army could find for intelligence!

Ret_25X

In a system that actively rewards the most anti-social and narcissistic personality types, we should be unsurprised that many senior people are completely without remorse or moral compass.

Besides, he is “entitled” to that tax payer money because he ‘checked the block’ on the time sheet long enough (*SARC).

lily

That retirement money is peanuts compared to that feeling of losing power. He probably sits in his chair in the dark with his blankie thinking about it for hours every week. Now he can only get accolades by going to his local Association of the United States Army chapter meetings.

Ret_25X

Trust me, the money is more than everything to these turds. It is literally the ONLY thing.

The best part is how many of them believe themselves to be underpaid while in uniform and entitled to 7 digit salaries in the MIC.

This is why I have always favored a law that simply states that all GO/FO/SES types must go home and shut up upon retirement–pay them their AD pay to just go away. I’m OK with all elected BS artists being included.

MSG Eric

If we kept 3 and 4 stars on active duty pay and benefits, they’d actually be “cheaper” because after they retire, their retirement pay is MORE than they make on active duty. That’s due to caps on military salaries.

Deplorable B Woodman

Make THEM sit through a 3 hour “Death By Power Point” presentation. They’ll either clean up their act (NOOOOOO!! NEVER AGAIN!), or they’re the world’s biggest masochists.

Martinjmpr

No they’ll just send their aide to go to the briefing for them. That’s what generals do.

A Proud Infidel®™

THANK GOD we have adults at the helm once again, here’s hoping that SECDEF “Warrior Monk” Mattis throws more trash like that OUT!

HMCS(FMF) ret

I wonder if he could recall Marty back to AD, then pull a star or four from his collar, then retire his ass?

Marty Dempsey = the Caucasian JEF in uniform

MSG Eric

They’ve done it quite a few times, so yes.

AZtoVA

Odd. Even though Gannett owns both USA Today and the MilTimes suite, I don’t see this in the Early Bird….

ex-OS2:

Please bring it. Target is easily identified by the overpowering stench of hypocrisy that surrounds it wherever it goes.

You are cleared hot.

OC

With apologies to ex-OS2,

Cocksucker!

Mick

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!

Thanks for covering this target in ex-OS2’s absence, OC.

I believe that he’s temporarily back out on the carrier refueling and rearming.

OC

Waiting for his capable return.
I’m back myself after back surgery two weeks ago.
Nobody does it like ex-OS2!

HMCS(FMF) ret

COCKSUCKING ASS HAMSTER!

Mick

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!

Doc scores another direct hit.

David

It’s a scandal when 20 year old kids act immaturely like – well, 20 year old kids. But when it’s a flag officer…. Can some Democrat explain that to me?

Graybeard

Because pheeellllzzzzz!

Graybeard

Retroactive punishment of both of these idiots should be in full force, losing all retirement and other benefits.

MSG Eric

At most, they will reduce them to the last rank they served honorably/successfully at and that will be what their retirement pay is at. So, maybe O-6 and O-9

If they can find evidence of Custer doing these things even as an O-6, O-5, etc., then they could drop him down even more. But, generally the flag officers lose 1-2 stars and that’s it.

Smaj

Little Marty Dempsey is the poster boy for what is wrong with today’s lickspittle, ethically-challenged GOFO corps.

OldSoldier54

Bingo!

Veritas Omnia Vincit

Custer’s last stand should be his court martial and dismissal without benefits…until one of these peckerheads is made an example of it’s not going to stop or slow down…

Don’t like the rules, tough shit…quit….if you stay in follow the rules or pay the penalty regardless of rank….

Piece of shit asshole.

SFC D

Wonder if he had his own table at Huachuca City’s famous “Dusk till Dawn” cabaret.

Deplorable B Woodman

A pair of self-maintaining, perpetual motion DRG.

MSG Eric

What kills me is how many good mid-grade leaders have been kicked to the curb in the last 2-3 years because of maybe one bad piece of paper in a long career. Meanwhile, flag officers can play these kind of games for years and several ranks with no accountability.

SFC Martland’s case is a significant example where one PC loaded evaluation almost meant his career, the rest of which was stellar. Yet, General fuckbrain here gets away with this kind of thing for years and still gets to retire and get O-8 retirement bennies.

Pinto Nag

The military isn’t the only place this game gets played.
