EU court backs Belgium’s rejection of visa to Syrians
The European Court of Justice (ECJ) has backed a Belgian decision to refuse a humanitarian visa to a Syrian family. The family of five, from Aleppo, had applied for a 90-day visa at the Belgian embassy in Lebanon, so they could later seek asylum in Belgium.
The Court rejected the Advocate General’s advice and decided that EU law did not require member states to allow visas to people whose ultimate aim is asylum.
The ruling is a significant victory for Belgian migration minister Theo Francken who has argued that EU member states alone should have the power to issue visas. Common sense had prevailed, he said. “NGOs wanted to open EU borders in embassies abroad,” but the Court had been very clear that humanitarian visas were a national competency.
Now the complaint from a researcher at the Netherlands’ Center for Migration Law at Radboud University is that it will increase trafficking in undocumented migrants.
Excuse me – increase it? Isn’t it rather hefty right now?

I’m sure there will be a lot of loud, unhappy noises from people who don’t understand the idea behind having secure borders to keep the Very Bad Guys out of your living room. But a huge number of undocumented ISers were recruited from the Eurozone. Some are being recruited here. Some of them may now be in Mosul still holding hostage the citizens who lived there and can’t run away – something on the order of 750,000 people. Frankly, considering the most recent events both here in the US and in Europe, and the Swedish media’s not reporting violent disruptions going on in that country, I think that any sovereign nation has the right to refuse.
This is not going to come to a tidy end, either.

I see the problem here. It’s quite obvious and is found in the last sentence of the first paragraph of the court’s decision: “They emphasise, in particular, the deteriorating security situation in Syria in general, and in Aleppo especially, and on the fact that, being Orthodox Christians, they are at risk of persecution on account of their religious beliefs.” The family is Christian.
Oh, you saw that, too?
I thought maybe I misread it and it really said ‘Quakers’, or something.
I would guess that the EU Court was greatly relieved to have a technical out on this. How could the court agree that the family’s being non-Muslim was a contributing factor to their persecution and need for asylum when all of Europe is being told that the continent must welcome the poor Muslims with open arms and compassion? To do so would have been an admission that, indeed, the Muslims are a threat to non-Muslims just for being non-Muslim. Couldn’t have that.
Yes, indeed, Sensei.
That attitude came from obozo the puke, block all christians and allow his muslim SCUM in….! the same morons here, communists and muslims are pissing and moaning about Trumps blocking of immigrants…may all terrorist go to the communists house and take care of them!!
10th Circuit will overturn this. Bunch of wraycisst Belgian Waffles….what aboot them poor suffering wimmen & children?
Wow. So they take in a shitload of muslims and the moment a Christian family shows up, they close the border.
The fact that the EU dictates how many immigrants each country must take in every year, is disturbing. This is not what the EU was meant to do, but they rule on everything. And most members of the EU are fed up.
Brexit is underway. Frexit is next, as will be the Dutch if Geert Wilders wins.
I do think Geert will win, they are so pissed.
I also see Merkel losing in Germany. I don’t think they’ll leave the EU, but I do definitely see them going to a much more conservative government.
Not leaving EU is possible, but eventually, with enough bad stuff coming from it, it will begin to dissolve. I don’t see Merkel winning the next election, either.
Cognitive Dissonance. 🙂
