Weekend open thread

| March 3, 2017

The picture this weekend is from Joey T;

It’s the bottom of “Engineer Hill” in the 11 area of Camp Pendleton taken this week when I was out running. Although Hack Stone might not believe it, I did run to the top of it and have another one from the top to prove it but don’t want to clog your mailbox with 11 MB of pictures.

I thought some old Marines who served on Pendleton might like to see it.

Congrats Animal!

Thank you sir. I think I got carpal tunnel clicking refresh.

Sounds like an early case of PTWOTS to me…
The stress of refreshing like that not knowing if you are going to make it must be terrible.

Congrats Animal !!!

Double Wooo Hooo. Maybe I’ll read some Birdbath drivel and reapply for T&P?

Bergdahl’s Man Love Thursday Buddy went to his 72 Virginians this week it seems.

Gee, that’s too bad.

Now he won’t be available to testify as a character witness at Bergdahl’s court-martial.

Sad, indeed.

Tom Huxton

“suspected US strike”

Got to start dropping flags, or aces of spades or pork rinds, so there is less ambiguity in news reports.

Right Tom, suspected my ass. Who else but the US has the capability to shoot laser guided missiles from unseen aerial assets?

Combat Historian

Third, oh well, I gave it the good historian try…

UpNorth

A 3-way tie!!
Oh, Not First!!

2/17 Air Cav

There cannot be a tie for first in the WOT, despite multiple postings declaring “First!” There can be only one who is truly first, and this week that person (um, ah) is Animal. He has been duly entered into the Book of Firsts. Arguably, ex-OS2 and Combat Historian are nearest losers. That’s the best that can be given.

Commissioner Wretched

Third … or maybe fourth … damn, not as good as I did last week. Oh, well.

Looking forward to that dumb shit getting slammed by another judge for his incredible display of stupidity.

Speaking of dumb shits, how about another weekly shoutout to Dennis “10lb block of cheese between two slices of bread” Chevalier, who still won’t venture out here to the Pineywoods to be confronted for being a total waste of space and martial statuses.

What Mick said. It’s happening on Tuesday. If it weren’t for JRTC, I’d attend and post what I’m able to post. I’m in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake is in the same metropolitan area.

Since I am mentioned in the thread, that technically makes me first. We may have to send it to the booth for review, though. If the judges in the booth rule against me, I have a retired attorney in Fort Myers that is willing to represent me Pro Sonny Bono.

I won’t go quietly Hack. This ranks very high in my life achievements. I’m screenshotting this and am going to put it on the wall.

As the one who mentioned you, I have to disqualify your BS claim of first.

Well, I’m working on a Very Important Story, so I don’t care, but I’m going to fix red beans and rice for supper tonight, from scratch, with chorizo sin picante and red kidney beans and smoked sausage. And rice, of course. And cornbread. And oranges were $2/netbag at Aldi.

Animal

Isn’t it a tradition that a first time firster gets red beans and rice for a victory supper?

Mick

No.

You get Spam, Spam, and more Spam.

Semper Fi.

Animal

Oh boy. Spam. Can I at least get it fried, with bread and mustard?

Mick

I will refer you to Ex-PH2 for adjudication of your gastronomic request.

Is there any other way to eat it? Has to be brown deli mustard though, not that bright yellow shit, that’s for kids and women with tender palates.

Maybe even Ham and MF’ers if it’s a special day?

Sorry Ex, I just have to walk across the street and pick them fresh out of the grove! Sorry about your luck!

Ex-PH2

Hey, $2 for 4 pounds of oranges that are so thin-skinned and juicy is NOT an issue for me. Around here, that is one truly good price, and there are 10 to a netbag. That makes them $.20/ea.

Yes, I would like to be able to walk across the street and just pick them, but I’d like to just pick strawberries**, too, and it’s still winter in my kingdom. I’ll take what I can get and be grateful for it.

**Strawberries: big, juicy, ripe and $2.00 for a 1-lb. box.

Well since the Mrs. recently retired, there is going to be a lot of travel coming soon. To her delight and my dismay. But, what are you going to do? All that said, I will try to lurk and comment as often as I can find hot spots but not being home with my laptop at easy access I won’t be around as much as I would like. So in case anyone cares or wonders why there will be less of me, now you’ll know. Most folks think the less of me…the better. 😀

Everyone please take good care of yourselves and loved ones. For those of you who have my email address, please do let me know if anything dire happens to anyone.

Laddle gravy over tortillas and top with cheese.

Bake @350 until cheese is melted.

I prefer to add more gravy after baking, your choice.

Just to keep in your tradition, Looks real fucking tasty. Here in Colorado we would top with green chili. We put this stuff on everything.

ex-OS2

My wife is from Colorado and schooled me on this recipe and insisted that I add green chili’s. Being the Yankee that I am, I obliged.

It is extremely tasty!

OWB

We talking a little roast or a big roast? Would a 3.5 lb one work well with these proportions?

Finally found a butcher a couple of weeks ago who knows how to cut a larger roast. They were hard to find around here.

ex-OS2

“Would a 3.5 lb one work well with these proportions?”

Absolutely. Just be sure to add enough water over it!

Ex-PH2

Is there a substitute for jalapenos in that? I like spicy, not HOTTTT!. The red beans and rice dish that I fixed for supper was just right.

ex-OS2

You could leave out the jalapeños’, the green chiles will make it spicy enough!! Maybe use “medium” salsa?

Perry Gaskill

If you like the flavor of a certain kind of chile pepper, but find it too hot, a way to bring the heat down is to scoop the seeds out of the center.

A Proud Infidel®™

A dash of sour cream on the side helps tame the heat as well.. Anyone ever use Datil Pepper? I saw and tried a sauce made from that. No joke, it was “Cheech Marin’s Datil Pepper Sauce”, tried it at Firehouse Subs!

Excerpts from the Armstrong Funeral Home obituary:

Samuel Naomi, son of Joseph & Anna Naomi, was born March 3, 1926 in Brookville, Kentucky. Sam entered into the U.S. Army on September 15, 1950 at Newark, New Jersey. Sam served his country during the Korean War and was honorably discharged on September 5, 1952.

Sam was a conductor and conductor instructor for the Chicago and North Western Railroad.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son Samuel Naomi, Jr, and his four siblings.

Survivors include his wife Karon of Tingley, daughter Theresa Brauer and granddaughter Kayla Brauer, both of Ankeny, IA, and his best friend Banjo.

Private graveside services will be held in the Tingley Cemetery in Tingley, Iowa.

Ex-PH2

Yes, she did serve three tours in the Viet of the Nam.

USS America (CVA/CV-66) was one of three Kitty Hawk-class supercarriers built for the United States Navy in the 1960s. Commissioned in 1965, she spent most of her career in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, but did make three Pacific deployments serving in the Vietnam War. She also served in the Persian Gulf War’s operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

Today’s project involves the wheels to a beater. I like to say that it looks like a nightmare and drives like a dream. And it’s true. So, I’m having fun messin’ w/ it. An acquaintance told me that he took some funky wheels, blasted them, washed them, and peel-coated them, finishing off with a coat or two or three of clear lacquer, Said it’s hard as a rock and when he changed tires on the wheels, he thought the job would be ruined, but it wasn’t. So, that’s what I’m trying. I’m not sandblasting. Got the old wheel and brush out and dealing with the prep that way. We’ll see.

Is Medicare being deducted from more than one?
