Three From Bob
Had connectivity and a few minutes time, and today’s Sunday. But DPAA doesn’t seem to have accounted for anyone new during the past few days – so you’re getting this “walkabout” instead.
Read on at your own risk. At least this time it’s short. (smile)
. . .
During the 1970s, many in the media anointed some guy named Springsteen from Ashbury Park, NJ, as next the “great American singer” and the “voice of his generation”. Seriously.
Now, Mr. Springsteen is indeed talented. And for those unfortunate enough to be from the Northeast, maybe he does speak for them. Maybe.
But regarding speaking for the rest of America . . . eh, no. In that case IMO the media had their head firmly inserted up their 4th point of contact (as usual) and were also showing their East Coast bias.
Because for the rest of America, IMO a different singer was the voice of that time and generation. His work – not Springsteen’s – more closely captured the feelings and concerns of America during the 1970s and 1980s.
That man was named Bob Seger.
Here are three of the man’s best. All deal with universal subjects. And I’m guessing the last two will resonate particularly strongly with anyone who’s served in the military.
Enjoy.
Twenty years now, where’d they go . . .
Category: Pointless blather, Who knows
I agree about Seger’s music. I never really liked anything by Springsteen, although what I’ve heard is only what made it to the radio. (Does that date me or what!)
But moving to the Detroit area in the late ’60’s (high school age) gave me some early exposure to Seger, and I moved back here in 1980. Seger gets a lot more air time here on the classic rock stations.
The one sad quote I read about Seger is that his song “The Strut” is actually about Jane Fonda. Ick! Gag! Barf! Ptoo!
A quick search says http://tinyurl.com/jhbauu2
I repeat: Ick! Gag! Barf! Ptoo!
When I read the post, I had another Seger in mind and thought, “Has Hondo gone off his nut?” Then I saw the pics and realized Bob Seger isn’t Pete Seeger and calmed down.
YGBSM … I was up all night with Seger playing in the background. IMO, Against The Wind is his best. Damn, what a meaningful song. Like A Rock is second. Damn, what a talent. Classic music.
Still … if you want to see a smile on my fat face, queue me up some Meatloaf, Croce, Fogelberg or Lightfoot. I’m seeing Lightfoot next month. Seems he never stops touring.
Croce for sure. He left use way too soon.
Damn! I just got done playing his greatest hits CD while cooking breakfast. Cranked it.
Bruce Springsteen? I was at Ft Monmouth in 68.
Never heard of the guy then. Since then he has made quite an ass of himself.
Ever see an old bastard cruising down the road rockin’ out to Hendrix, Cream, the Stones or ZZ Top? That’s me.
Bob Segar and the Silver Bullet Band’s Greatest Hits CD is in the rotation on my Bose Wave. Seems ALL of the songs Hondo posted are on it.
You nailed it Hondo…Like A Rock!
You forgot “Turn The Page”.
Thought the same thing, ex-OS2.
Ironically, when reading Hondo’s post, thought immediately of “Turn the Page.”
Spot on, Hondo. Spot on.
Had the pleasure of attending two of Seger’s concerts. What a show. Forget Springsteen.
This is for you, Hondo, since you are on the road:
Some other good ones from Bob Seger are Turn the Page, Fire Lake, and The Fire Down Below. I remember once seeing a recording of Bette Midler performing the last one; it was a hoot.
Bette belts it out!
Thanks for the reminder!
Shitstain was in Australia trashing the Trumpster. Maybe Bruce needs to ask OZ PM Malcolm Turnbull why his country isn’t taking in the 2000+ “refugees” the gov’t has confined on a desolate island. Yeah, those “refugees” Pres Trump was furious about having to accept.
The good samaritan bikers should have left that A$$munch stranded in the NJ wilderness.
Don’t forge, “Get Over It”.
Haven’t heard ‘Like a Rock’ in a (large) number of years – thanks for the reminder!
Only people I know who think Springsteen is the greatest are very much left-wingers. I just don’t care much for his music, has nothing to do with whatever politics he espouses. But if I want to do basic American rock, Seger and Mellencamp are gonna get played a lot faster. I have Tales of Lucy Blue on vinyl (bought new – geez, that dates me) bought Night Moves while in Texas at AIT and ever since I got ‘Live Bullet” it has been the gold standard by which live rock albums are judged.
