Ft Bliss, TX soldiers missing
MSN reports that two Fort Bliss, Texas solders, barracks buddies Jake Obad-Mathis and Melvin Jones, went missing last week;
Obad-Mathis and Jones were members of the same company at Fort Bliss following their enlistments in 2015. They were last seen on the base on Dec. 19 in a black 2013 Camaro that belonged to Jones.
Obad, 50, said she found out they were missing two days later. A sergeant called her to say her son had been declared AWOL after failing to report for duty on Dec. 19 and the following day.
Obad-Mathis was supposed to spend Christmas with his commanding sergeant, KTSM-TV reported Saturday.
Jones was supposed to attend Friday’s Sun Bowl football game in El Paso with his father Duane Jones, the station reported.
“When I got off the plane and looking for him and not having him looking for me, yea that was the hardest,” the father told another station, KVIA-TV.

This is going to turn out to be a case of either bad news (i.e. involuntary), or very bad news (i.e. voluntary.
Since a soldier or two going AWOL really isn’t news somebody some where must be thinking they are not willingly missing. Hmmm. Or not.
Guess we could play the pure conjecture game, but that would accomplish little, and likely nothing constrictive.
Here’s hoping they are found soon regardless of what happened.
Amen to that, NR Pax…
Ditto. If it’s been two weeks and no one has heard from them, it is not a good sign. I know there’s been bad weather down in that area, but there are other, worse things down there, too.
Please keep us posted on this one.
A lot of border jumpers would love to get their hands on a couple of GI’s and a black Camaro!!
I’d start pressing our “Dan Bernathian user friendly government to the south” on that ever so border security. I hope am wrong, the hills south of El Paso are a literal graveyard: that’s why the border is off limits.
Am hoping for the best, praying for a real bad hangover story but my experience and expectations of area growing up have me jaded.
Two privates are AWOL?
Last seen in a black camero that one of them owned?
Check the local stripbars. And GFs.
Did the chow hall have lasagna? That could be news too…
My guess is if this is in the news, they have already checked cell phone records and their phones are no longer in a network anywhere, and any social media these two may have has probably not been accessed since they were last seen.
Except that one is not AWOL and I’m not at all certain that the one who is AWOL commands that much investigative attention just yet. The civilian police say it’s a mil matter and won’t touch it. There are enough toll booths and gas station videos to look at if the need arises. In the meantime, all we have is two “best buddies” and the less I say about that the better.
Barracks Buddies?
They might have eloped. Come Bach to an Article-15 and BAH.
There will be no GAWOL jokes until we learn they are okay.
Why does there need to be any, anyway? Fantasizing already?
Gee, “TerminatorCo,” did I upset you? Who said there “needs” to be? That there may be and that there needs to be are not one and the same thing. As for fantasizing, no, I don’t fantasize about your perversions. However, whenever possible, I do make fun of them.
And another thing, while I’m off topic. I am sick and tired of seeing girly men and trannies on TV. If they’re not on a show or in a movie, they’re on a commercial. There must be a quota system published somewhere. So, I figure why the hell should I shut up about being sick of this shit. It’s my way of attempting equal time.
Yeah there will. Someone should check the nearest Mexican Gay Brothel and Bathhouse.
Could not agree more. These two either ran-off voluntarily or they have met with some manner of tragedy. If the former is true, they’re a couple of foolish young guys who will be punished. If the latter is true, some in this forum are ridiculing two honorably-serving young soldiers who are deserving of respect.. and their families may be worthy of great sympathy.
Unfortunately, I have a feeling that they went off base, got involved in a single vehicle accident on a deserted stretch of road, and no one was around to witness and report it. A few years back, a young man was reported missing in the National Capital Region. About a week later, someone riding shotgun in a car slowly crawling through traffic on the Baltimore Washington Parkway just happened to look out the window at the right time, and saw the young man crawling in a ditch off of the road. Hopefully these young Soldiers are found safe.
Agree/thought the same thing.
Yeah-lots of wild territory around El Paso, easy for an accident to go undiscovered (let’s hope they have just wandered off into Mexico and found some accommodating young ladies who have kept them distracted for a couple of weeks).
I can’t get with that at all. One gut is on approved leave and his “best buddy” takes off with him, AWOL. We’ll probably never see a news follow up once they have been located.
Whats scary is That UA/ AWOL usually is a solo venture. The odds of the the two of them saying fuck it, lets bounce together are pretty slim, especially since one had planned on going on leave.
Hoping it wasn’t an accident or an act of violence.
El Paso is a tough town. Juarez is off limits I believe, but when stationed there 70-71 we went across the bridge a lot, but in groups of four and five usually Vietnam Vets.
While it would be pretty hard to wreck undetected off the main roads, there are plenty of side roads leading off into the desert. Lots of folks fail to realize that you don’t have to break down that far off the road to be at a lethal distance on foot, and that while the average high during the days is tolerably high, nights tend to hover around the freezing mark.
I’m thinking that trouble in Juarez is a more likely explanation, though, for any involuntary delays. It may be better than it was a few years ago, but there are still areas even the local residents avoid.
Bliss? Yikes. When I hear “Juarez” I think of this:
Just have the authorities check Orogrande or MacGregor Range.
I’m betting the two of them are lying out by the pool getting a tan and eating popcorn.
Unrelated to the topic, PFC Obad-Mathis’ ribbons are out of order.
Put his rack on upside down would be my guess. 😉
UPDATE. Let the GAWOL jokes begin. The mother of missing soldier Jake Obad Mathis is the woman who rang the alarm bell on her missing little boy. She is now declining comment regarding the matter and posted this on FB as her final word: “Final Update on Jake and Melvin. We received some information this week that leads us to believe they are together and okay. We still have not been able to communicate with Jake directly and don’t know when that will be. Our hearts are still heavy but the outlook is positive.”
My read on that is that she now knows her little 100 pounder and his “best buddy,” another 100 pounder, are safe in each other’s arms.

Dollar to a doughnut they’re “holed” up in Santa Fe.
Once the matter came to be investigated, I’m sure that it didn’t take long to track them through ATM visits and gas station videos. And that look-see made clear, I’m guessing, that no harm had come to them. The matter was used as a hammer by media to question the give-a-shit of the Army regarding two missing soldiers and to question the relationship between CID/civilian police when it comes to folks missing from federal enclaves. Now that it is certain that the lil fellas are okay and probably just GAWOL, major media want no part of the story.
I’m not going to make any tacky jokes, but if they ran off into the blue at a holiday time, when people were expecting them to show up, that is just childish.
All this over two non-combat / non-heros. When I went on my 3 combat tours my buddies and I joked that we were in “the shit”, I guess those two cute little boys really were in the shit.
