Is it morning in America again?

| November 8, 2016

I believe the people who truly make this world go around, the battered American Middle Class, are as uncertain today as am I. We deserve better than we have. Or maybe we do not deserve better. One thing I do know, most of us have spent a lot of time chasing the American dream without checking on the political class and the media elite snob class who through corruption and collusion are putting the dream farther from reach with every corrupt deal and every item of unreported news. The other thing I know for certain is sometime tonight, Election Day 2016, our country will either experience a rebirth or it will die. Countries simply do not return from Progressivism/Communism and now add Globalism. Ask the Cubans and Chinese. Ask the open border Europeans.

Suzie-Q and I voted early this morning. Our polling place opened at 6:30 AM. We arrived there at about 6:45 and there was hardly a place to park. We have voted every election at that polling place for the 17 years we have lived here. Never have I seen so many people out to vote. As we were returning home, a great big orange, red sun was just up in the morning sky. The first thing that popped into my mind was the Regan ad, “It’s morning in America again.” Listening to that ad, it was so painfully obvious that the incumbent political party could offer nothing even remotely similar. All we have seen from the most corrupt politician to ever seek the office was personal attacks on her opponent. When you are void of ideas that is what you do. I never heard anything remotely approaching it because every policy over the past 7 plus years has been a spectacular failure. Everything from Middle East disasters, to Obama care to, Benghazi to, nearly 95 million Americans out of the workforce to, every federal agency being used as a weapon against Americans. And all the incumbent party and its establishment cronies in Congress and the media can offer is more of the same.

I saw where Mrs. Clinton canceled the fireworks display she had scheduled for her election night celebration. I do not interpret that to mean anything, but if members of her campaign staff start booking flights to countries without extradition treaties I will believe something is up.

We hear it every single election. “This is the most important election of a lifetime.” Well, this one truly is. Go vote and God Bless America.

If the Canadian border goes on lockdown, Hillary has lost.

HMC Ret

Dapandico: There is always Mexico. Or one of those countries that shoveled millions into her ‘charity’.

I just got a letter from trump with a form for my state to be able to put my info, voter # and drivers lic # in and check to see if my absentee ballot was accepted……it was…..I forwarded it to all my friends around the state….EXCELLENT IDEA…I don’t trust the dumocraps any farther than I can throw them!!

I drove by my polling place this morning just out of curiosity.
It’s a small elementary school in a crowded suburb. I( think that because we have quite a few schools in the area, my school is just for two sides of the adjoining neighborhood. Lots of cars on the street and in the driveway and the small parking lot that may hold 15 cars but only a few people walking in as I drove by.
The small gym only has like 5 or 6 voting booths and a couple of ladies at one 6 foot table so no line around the block.

I said a prayer that we don’t get smacked in the back of the head and start screaming BOHICA!!!! for the next 4 year, regardless whether it’s Shillary Mc Cankles or The Big D.

I almost want to fly to California and cry over Ronald Reagan’s grave.

AZtoVA

I always vote when the polls open at 0600, on the way to work. Mostly find 10 people or less. 2008 there were maybe 25-30, larger group but certainly less than 50.

This morning I rolled up, parking lot was nearly full, well over 100-150 people already in line and a steady stream already coming out from having voted. My district is solid red, about the most northern dependably red county in Virginia. And all ballots were on paper, no mis-calibrated machines to fight with. Several new veteran poll assistants working the site as well.

So far, so good. We’ll see what happens later tonight. As it has been said before, it’s not the one who votes that makes the difference, but the one who counts the votes….

Sonny's Mom

I grew up in NoVa, glad to hear there are still many patriots living there.

AZtoVA

Unfortunately, everything north of the Occoquan is still occupied territory.

Can’t even get a glass of sweet tea.

Jonn Lilyea

I drove up Rte. 7 to Winchester yesterday and saw about three Clinton signs and thousands of Trump signs.

HMC Ret

No sweet tea? That’s crazy talk.

JD Pendry

Was there this past weekend. If you are in sections of Falls Church, Fairfax and Annandale you may feel like the foreigner.

MustangCryppie

This will probably make you cry harder that we have no one who can lead like this. This is Reagan’s last appeal to the American people in 1980.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EvFQLhqWPQ

If he had debated Clinton, she would have been a blubbering baby at the end.

sj

JD: was the crowd mostly left or right? Good post.

Graybeard

Regardless of who wins, history and Scripture have shown throughout the millennia that God is still in ultimate control.

That truth does not mean that if we, the most blessed nation on earth, continue on the path we’ve been on, will not suffer. Israel under the Assyrians and Judah under the Babylonians are proof of that.

But, like the Billy Graham quote (roughly) goes: “I’ve read the last page of the Bible. God wins.”

Palolojo

Amen to that, I have been reminding myself the last 8 years and will continue no matter outcome. I believe we are in end times. No matter what happens trust God.

Pinto Nag

“Your God was nailed to a cross. My god carries a hammer. Any questions?”

I didn’t say that to make you angry, I said that to make you think. We are responsible for what is happening in our nation and world. That’s why we were given brains and free will, to create, for ourselves, the heaven or hell we will ultimately enjoy or suffer. That “god wins” business means we’re just along for the ride as pawns in a cosmic board game, and that’s worse than useless.

Ex-PH2

I agree.

We have choices and are responsible for the results of those choices.

Graybeard

Nothing I said contradicts that, Ex-PH2.

Graybeard

“My God was nailed to a cross, buried in a tomb, and rose from the dead. Your god never lived.”

Pinto and Ex, my dears, I think you misunderstand what is behind my statement.

Holding, as I do, both of the Scriptural doctrines of God’s Sovereignty and man (mankind’s) Free Will, does not allow room for the “pawns in a cosmic board game” analogy. That is not a Biblical teaching. What Scripture does teach, time and again, is if we, of our own free will, choose to follow God’s instructions on how to live (maybe think of “the manufacturer’s operating manual”?) then things eventually wind up good – in this life and in the next. When we reject His instructions, things don’t work out.
This is not a good forum for deep theological discussions, I realize. And this is a poor summation of a complex set of doctrines that leaves much out of the mix.

But the summation is this: regardless of our circumstances, good or bad, for those who serve God He has good in store, and His final end-game cannot be overturned.

Pinto Nag

I notice that, while I never said your god didn’t exist, you decided to go there with mine. The problem is your god does exist, and I attempted to love and serve him for almost 40 years. After being ignored, hurt, and abandoned, I finally went over the wall when I got a better offer — and I will tell you that my gods now are more alive for me than yours ever was.

Graybeard

As I said, this is not a forum that lends itself to good discussions of this nature.
I do not know (nor need to) what your experiences were or are. And this is not a good place to share mine – all the pain and sense of abandonment.
But I do know that the God I serve is the One and Only Living God, Creator of Heaven and Earth.
I cry for your pain, yet I know and can bear witness to the God of the Bible, and the loving faithfulness He has for His people.

Ex-PH2

Yeah, but Graybeard, Jesus was NOT God, he was the son of God. He was a human being, like it or not. So you’re referring to a man. None of the gods are incarnate at all.

reddevil

Most mainstream Christians (with the exception of Christian Scientists, LDS, Jehovah’s Witnesses and a few others) believe in the Holy Trinity and that Jesus is God along with the Father and Holy Spirit.

That said, I agree that nothing in Christianity indicates that God is going to intervene in our election or favor our nation for picking one candidate over another.

Pinto Nag

I didn’t say what I did for your benefit, because I knew it would mean nothing to you. I said what I did for others who might be interested. And YOU were the one who referenced god in your first comment, and since there are few restrictions on this site as to subject matter, I addressed what you said. I would agree with you, that this isn’t the place for a full-blown religious discussion. Perhaps another time, though. Or not.

OC

With all due respect Pinto Nag, my God’s SON was nailed to a cross……

Pinto Nag

The doctrine of the Trinity teaches that while there are Three Persons, there is one God. I know there are Christians who don’t believe Jesus was equal to his Father, but the traditional view is that Jesus is God, just as his father is.

Neither you or I are followers of the Elephant God of Hindu Dinesh….I just lack a belief in one more god than you. When you consider why you don’t believe in Dinesh perhaps you might understand why your god seems equally unbelievable to me. Perhaps you won’t understand, I don’t know. It doesn’t matter in any event….

Thomas Jefferson once wrote And the day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus, by the supreme being as his father in the womb of a virgin will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter…it was in the context of a discussion on Calvinism, but he may have been more accurate at the time than he realized.

Graybeard

VOV,
I would argue that what we believe makes all the difference in the world – for it impacts how we live and respond to those around us. One cannot separate how one treats other people from what one believes.
And yet again – our individual beliefs are irrelevant to the question of whether or not God exists. If He does, He continues to exist whether or not we believe in Him. If He doesn’t, all our believing will not cause Him to exist.

One of the fundamental claims of Judeo-Christian thought is that what we believe is both true and reasonable. This is not the place for an extended discussion of Christian apologetics, and I did not intend to go there, but there are many resources for those who wish to investigate it.

Mike

لا إله إلا الله
There is no god but God (Allah)?

Sometimes, the wrong place for a religious discussion is the best place to get an honest, no-holds-barred discussion (though perhaps on a different thread).

Graybeard

True that, Mike. But, IMHO, a blog is just not an ideal place for such a discussion. We miss to much in written communications, especially informal written communications like this. To many things can be misconstrued and/or miscommunicated. And in a quick-paced forum like this, that is a recipe for confusion.
(Not to mention the numbers of times we end up mis-typing something or having auto-corrupt change it for us….)

As long as Jonn doesn’t jump my case, I don’t mind the discussions – with an understanding of the limitations of the medium.
(And nice job getting the Arabic on here!)

Graybeard

Point: that is supposed to be “Too many things…”
-sigh-

Mike

Admittedly, it is a challenge on a forum like this. Especially as the replies get narrower and narrower (on mobile, at least). However, I still feel the community here has a lot to contribute to such a discussion, as well as enough respect for each other to freely join in without worry or concern about different views.

I don’t post online often, and read comments even less, but I make exception for this site for those exact reasons.

Eden

Thanks for the reminder, Graybeard.

AZtoVA

Absolutely, Greybeard.

“The whole system of my politics is summed up in this one verse, “The Lord reigns! Let the nations tremble!” Psalm 99:1

The times look awfully dark indeed; and as the clouds grow thicker–the stupidity of the nation seems proportionally to increase. If the Lord had not a remnant here, I would have very formidable apprehensions. But He loves His children; some are sighing and mourning before Him, and I am sure He hears their sighs, and sees their tears. I trust there is mercy in store for us at the bottom; but I expect a shaking time before things get into a right channel–before we are humbled, and are taught to give Him the glory.

The state of the nation and the state of the churches–both are deplorable! Those who should be praying–are disputing and fighting among themselves! Alas! how many professors are more concerned for the mistakes of government–than for their own sins!

“Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns!” Revelation 19:6″

From Letters by John Newman, 1725-1807

Graybeard

Good quote AZtoVA.

Eight years ago when The 0ne was elected, one of the men in my Sunday School class who has many years working in state government at fairly high levels said: “If the Lord wants to bring this nation to it’s knees in repentance, He has the right people in place.”

Alas how correct he was.

STSC(SW/SS)

Amen. No matter what our sins or suffering in life as long as we keep him in our hearts we will be saved.

1610desig

Voted 0600 in solid red Virginia county..parking lot at capacity and then some…never seen it like that…people in good mood but motivated

Pat

We keep voting the same clowns back to Congress term after term; no, we do not deserve better. ymmv

Anecdotal, but in and out in Blue Northern VA, no where near as crowded as 2008 and 2012. What does that mean? Probably nothing.

The other thing I know for certain is sometime tonight, Election Day 2016, our country will either experience a rebirth or it will die.

If I had a nickel for every time I’ve heard that sentiment expressed, about either political party, I could pay off the national debt. I’m still uncertain how I’m going to vote, as to me it’s a choice between corruption or idiocy, but I take the opposite stance than you – I know that no matter what happens, we’ll march on.

America is a democratic republic; we don’t die by peaceful elections. We might not like them, they might bring about some hardships, but our strength has always been in our people, not our policies. We’ll survive whatever today throws at us.

Sonny's Mom

If Hillary wins, expect her SC appointees to hogtie the 2nd Amendment. Hope that makes your decision a little easier.

Ex-PH2

Appointments to the Supreme Court are NOT automatic. It’s a false to assume that they are.

OC

I know what you mean Ex-PH2, but IF the feckless Repubs keep control of the Senate it doesn’t mean squat.
Can you say whiny Lindsay Graham and Sonia?

2/17 Air Cav

Oh, please. Ex-. Technically, you are correct, but as the Senate likes to say, “Elections have consequences.” That’s how those stupid bastards justify foisting the agenda-powered social engineers who legislate from the bench on us. In effect, nominations are automatic. Right after the Senators blast the nominee, first in committee and then for the nightly news, they vote “Aye.”

Ex-PH2

And mes amis, those whiny repukes can be voted out or even outvoted, remember?

2/17 Air Cav

Yes, I remember. The problem is that they gain office largely by lying through their teeth. Once in, they are all but assured of being returned, thanks to the pork, not to mention the name recognition of being on the news as often as they like. Sure, they can all be cast aside. But first we need some educated and discriminatory voters who actually give a shit and know what’s what.

2/17 Air Cav

Hell, we can start with English only ballots. Dafuq kind of country prints ballots in foreign languages?

2/17 Air Cav

Really. Ballots for US President, Senate, House in a foreign language. One day, the gov’t will come to your house and take your vote. No need to get up, get out, and stand in a line. I can see it easily. It will begin by an appeal to compassion on behalf of home bound invalids such as the phat phuks who ride around in motorized carts at stores. From there, it will expand until poll voting will be heard about only in American History classes as a racist, discriminatory method to curtail the vote.

LC

One that doesn’t have an official language.

And while I know you and I will disagree on this, I actually like this. We say we are not a country of a singular people unified by language, but rather a country of people unified by the ideas of freedom and liberty, which transcend a single language.

That isn’t to say it is without problems, obviously (illegal immigration, lack of assimilation, etc), but the idea that our principles transcend a single language is a powerful thing that sets us apart from damn near every other nation on Earth. It is American exceptionalism in practice.

Again, I’m quite sure you’ll disagree, and I understand that. Lots of people want a national language. I think if that day comes when we select one, we’ll have lost something of our defining character.

2/17 Air Cav

Whether or not we have a designated national language, the language of our country is English. The Brits would likely disagree but it’s English nonetheless. And, yes, I strongly disagree that multi-lingual ballots are an example of American exceptionalism, a now disfavored concept that has been replaced by globalism, despite what self-serving pols may say. And what better way to help that latter concept along than to have multilingual ballots? This country isn’t a freakin’ airline terminal and our gov’t isn’t the UN. Yet.

26Limabeans

A “think global act local” kind of country.

Ex-PH2

Well, they should be issued in all languages spoken in this country, don’t you think? Polish, Italian, Hebrew, Yiddish, Russian, Serbian, Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Gaelic – I’m losing count here.

I mean, what’s fair for one is fair for all, isn’t it? 🙂

Ex-PH2

Ooops, I left out Greek, Mandarin Chinese, Vietnamese and Korean. Very mixed neighborhood where I used to live in Chicago. Lots of Vietnamese and Korean signs everywhere, never mind the Greeks.

The Other Whitey

My in-laws speak Khmer and French, but are able to read English well enough to use an English ballot.

Alberich

[W]e don’t die by peaceful elections. We might not like them, they might bring about some hardships, but our strength has always been in our people, not our policies.

Our policy now is to import lots of people without much loyalty to this country. So that strength may be lost yet.

Graybeard

FWIW – the Mrs. and I voted early here in East Texas. Our county set a new record for ballots cast in early voting.
Passed by my church – which is also a voting place – and the parking lot had more cars than I’m used to seeing in it.

Eden

Hubby and I stood in line for over an hour on Friday. People were lined up around the VERY large building, and the line had doubled in size by the time we entered.

Veritas Omnia Vincit

hehehe your vote early comment reminded me of the old adage: “That’s the democratic way, vote early and often!!”

Mike

I often “go ugly, early,” but every other time, I at least got to f*ck someone. This time, I’m pretty sure the result is reversed.

Ex-PH2

In the five minutes that I stood outside the door of city hall, the line had piled up behind me down the length of the sidewalk and out of sight around the corner. Good times.

26Limabeans

Voted on the way back from the liquor store.
Pretty good crowd for a town of less than 300.
More than usual at the polling place also.

Veritas Omnia Vincit

Well here in the PRoM I’m going to cast my vote for Trump amidst the never ending stream of HRC drones asking how I could possibly vote for such a boorish individual…

I just like to remind them, that of the two candidates is quite interesting to me that one of them was in the government in a senior position when we gave up 25% of our uranium to the Russians and Americans were left to die in the ME without any backup….fuck HRC and the asswipes who love her.

2/17 Air Cav

“fuck HRC and the asswipes who love her.”

Love is unnecessary. Just voting for her qualifies.

Ex-PH2

Well, gee whiz, VOV, I went and voted for myself, with Squeaky Fromme for veep. She got out of jail in 2009. She probably needs a job now.

Pinto Nag

Wait…what?? You didn’t write me in as your veep?! Aw, darn, now my feelers are all crumpled an’ everything… *Sighs, hangs head, kicks rock down the road…*

Dustoff

Being a “Cold War” era guy, I have thought often of this election cycle, of the men and women that stood guard on the DMZ in Korea, stood the line with border Cav units in West Germany at the Fulda gap and Czech border and the Armour and Mech division behind them to stop/prevent the same type of people that nearly half the country wants to put in charge of my beloved USA. Really sad.

2/17 Air Cav

Yep.

Cyber O-3E

Hate to say it, and I will gladly eat crow if I’m wrong, but Trump has no chance of winning. Zero. In an election where just about any traditional candidate would beat Hillary in a landslide, we chose Donald Fing Trump. Again, really hope I’m wrong, but anyone mindlessly clinging to the hope that Trump wins is just setting themselves up for major disappointment.

But hey, look on the bright side…there’s another election in four years.

Sj

On the other hand if the Dims had put up almost anyone other than Screecher or Bern, it would have been a landslide. Say Jim Webb.

Cyber O-3E

Yeah, we’ve been doomed from the start either way. There’s always New Zealand…

Eden

I’m eyeing Israel myself. Watched a Bill Maher interview of Binyamin Netanyahu from a while back and wished (not for the first time) that we could elect him for President of the U.S.

Graybeard

That would be my druther if I had to leave Texas.

Hondo

Might want to talk to a few folks first. I understand most Israeli tax and social policies – and most Israeli politicians – are somewhat to the left of California.

Graybeard

I did qualify that with “if I had to leave Texas,” Hondo friend! 😉

I’d hope that Texas would secede before I had to leave, though.

The Other Whitey

Call me crazy, but I get the feeling we could do a lot worse than having Vladimir Putin in the White House. In fact, I’d take him over either of the current options.

Hondo

Check their laws regarding speech/press freedom and firearms. You might not be so enamored with NZ after you do.

Pinto Nag

I’m thinking Greenland or Iceland…

Cyber O-3E

BEST DAMN CROW I EVER HAD.

Had to pinch myself several times this morning just to be sure.

A Proud Infidel®™

Didja have it baked, fried, or braised? I myself was planning on emigrating to Texas after it seceded if Hitlery Cankles won but that’s been called off, it’s morning in America once again!

grizzledcoastie

In NW Florida, which is about as red as you can get, the line at our polling place went around the block and their parking lot was slammed. I had to park on the side of the road down the street and waited for an hour.

I think the enthusiasm gap is massive and if my few leftist friends are to be believed, many on the Communist side are holding their nose to vote for The Most Corrupt Woman in History. Hopefully that’s enough.

If not, demographics is destiny. Just imagine the whole nation as California and you’ll get the picture. Get your ammo and your long guns while you still can.

Ex-PH2

So that’s the best you can do? The whole country’s goin’ right down the sewer?

Geez, Loueeez! I swear, you’d try the patience of a saint! You give up before anything is even done. That’s you play ball games and poker, right?

Guard Bum

Here in the very rural Missouri Ozarks its reliably red but I have never seen so many people at the polls. Lots of folks around here just dont vote period out of mistrust of anything govt but I heard a couple old timers say it was the first time they have registered and then voted ever.

I hope that is a good sign but I cant help think there will be some shenanigans before its over.

2/17 Air Cav

Voted early and the line was long. Had an old hippie woman in front of me who did some kind of yoga tap dance to entertain herself. After a few minutes of suffering her, I asked, “Are you all right?” (I knew damn well she wasn’t.) She said she was okay but that she was bored. The 30-year old male behind me was a first-time voter. He registered years ago, he said, but did not see a burning need to vote until now. He showed up to STOP CLINTON. The man behind him was 60ish and was there for the same reason, as was I.

Martinjmpr

If our country was really so fragile that a bad president could ruin it we would have been gone long before now.

We’ve survived wars (including a devastating civil war), depressions, recessions, “panics,” natural disasters, terrorist attacks, and disco.

Whether it’s the screeching crone or the boorish lout who gets elected, we will survive.

For those hunkering in the bunker and waiting for the apocalypse, I can only echo the words of that great American Bill Murray and say “Lighten up, Francis.” 😉

Ex-PH2

Yes, I keep thinking of Jimmy Carter and Nixon, and before them, Tyler and Millard Filmore.

We’ve already had a swath of bad presidents, so what’s new?

Hondo

We also lived through LBJ, too.

Well, most of us did. 58,000+ didn’t quite make it. Thousands of others were crippled for life.

Elections have consequences. Sometimes they are minor; sometimes they’re severe.

And not everyone survives the consequences.

The Other Whitey

Actually, it was Warren Oates who said that.

Martinjmpr

Oh, whoops that was Sgt Hulka not Bill Murray who said that.

Bill Murray said “I wanna party with you.” 😀

Skyjumper

Drove by the town hall a few minutes ago and it seemed busier than in past elections. I’ll be voting later this afternoon after I put the final touches on the house & yard in prep. for winter up “Nort” here in Packer Land.

By the way, my John Deere has a cup holder built into the rear fender, however in the manual it says not to consume “alcoholic beverages” will mowing lawn. What the hell were they thinking when they wrote that or designed a cup holder?

Got my popcorn ready for tonight. Figured if I get pissed off too badly because of the election results, flying popcorn won’t damage the tv……….unless I forget to take it out of the bowl. 😉

Are we a “go” here at TAH tonight for election chat?

Skyjumper

will=while

ex-OS2

Who said popcorn?

Graybeard

Hopefully with lots of real butter.

Ex-PH2

Always butter at my house. And piecrusts made with pork fat, not questionable vegetable oils.

Skyjumper

Mmmmmmm, butter.

I loved my Grandma’s (immigrated to the U.S. from Bavaria) baked goodies.

Pies, Kuchen, grophens, were all made with generous amounts of butter or lard.

The one thing I never had an urge to eat, were Grandma’s “Lard Sandwiches”. That little snip of woman could probably have eaten most people under the table when it came to those.

Come to think about it, I can’t recall too many times NOT seeing her with her apron on and cooking/baking in the kitchen.

Mick

Everything that German Omas made was good.

EVERYTHING.

Graybeard

At the Sam Houston Memorial Museum they will cook popcorn in lard for the kiddos.

I was surprised how good it tasted – even eating leftovers after the kiddos had their fill.

Keepin' It Real

Wait a minute. You’re doing a few drive-bys before you vote?

Skyjumper

LMAO

Nah Keepin’, just had to run into town for a few items that I needed to pick up while I was working around the yard.

Have to go past the Town Hall on my way back home.

Would’ve stopped to vote than, but wasn’t smellin’ or lookin’ too purty from working around the hovel.

Will go back in a bit with my wallet in hand with my ID (I always show it) & cash for homemade baked goodies that are sold there.

A Proud Infidel®™

“By the way, my John Deere has a cup holder built into the rear fender, however in the manual it says not to consume “alcoholic beverages” will mowing lawn. What the hell were they thinking when they wrote that or designed a cup holder?”

SOMEBODY sued and got that added to the Owner’s manual. That or someone in their Legal Dept. said it needed to be added to help repel ambulance chasers. I’m all for doing away with shit like that and let Darwin’s Law cull the herd!

Sj

Have you ever read the warnings on a jet ski???? It is almost PrOn describing where one should not put their genitals in the jet etc. My shock is that those warnings are there because someone did it.

2/17 Air Cav

Sure we’ll survive,Martinjumper, but as what? That’s the thing. We have had an Emperor for eight years and he is passing the baton of the progressive agenda to the criminal H. Clinton. He’s been out there for a couple of weeks now, lying through his teeth on her behalf. This isn’t a personality contest. You know that. If you enjoyed oBaMa, Twitchy will be more of the same, but worse in that she will get to make Supreme Court appointments. And between oBaMaCare and the long hidden but now found fundamental right to same-sex marriage, I’ve had enough.

Ex-PH2

Well, I done did my civic duty. Went over to city hall, which is the polling place around here. Line was inside, curved back, out the door and around the corner. Have not seen it like that in any election ever, not even when it was JFK vs. Tricky Dick.

If it’s as backed up as it appears to be, the vote count should be enormous, for once.

And I need a sandwich.

Graybeard

Too bad you don’t have Whataburger in your neck of the woods.

A Proud Infidel®™

Mmmmm, Whataburger, they make a wicked Patty Melt!

Ex-PH2

No Whataburger, but I have beef cut for carne asada, which will make a great Philly cheesesteak with mushrooms and onions. And I’m thinking seriously of making a Cornish beef pasty, but I have to get some small turnips and more potatoes for it. And also, figgie hobbin. That means caramel sauce and whipped cream.

Hungry yet?

Graybeard

Yep.

Mick

How about some post-voting chow from White Castle up there in the Windy City?

‘Half a dozen sliders, a box of nails, and some belly wash.’

Translation: 6 White Castle burgers, fries, and a Coke.

Ex-PH2

We have the following facilities in the area:
Buffalo Wild Wings
Rosati’s Pizza
Honada Hibachi
General Tso’s Kitchen
Cracker Barrel
If I run out of ideas, I can always hit up one of these places.

Out of a total U.S. population of more than 300 million, does anybody but a complete fool believe either Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump are the best possible candidates? That a corrupt political hack, whose main appeal seems to be gender, and a reality TV wise ass are as good as it gets?

It’s probably also not a coincidence that both are from New York City which, surprise, also happens to be ground zero for a concentrated news media with mostly utter contempt for the “goobers” in flyover country. Meaning anywhere other than Manhattan or hipster Brooklyn. Sometimes Silicon Valley and Hollywood are allowed in, but only through the back door, and only if they wipe their feet. If there’s a lesson to be learned from this election it’s that the news media has gone spectacularly off the rails. And when the dust starts to settle tomorrow, there’s likely to be more than a few people on both ends of the political spectrum wondering why.

The finger pointing has already started. A current theory being floated among some journalists is that the national news media itself is caught in a self-reinforcing circle jerk with global social media. The New York Times might be on the bridge of the big boat headed for the rocks, but it’s Google, Facebook, and Twitter down in the engine room trying to restart power by hunting for a bigger hammer.

2/17 Air Cav

Our country is that fragile if by country you mean our Constitutional Republic. We have now exactly what the Framers tried to protect against: a centralized, all powerful, federal government. Their hope was that the powers given each branch would be jealously guarded, not surrendered by one in deference to another. Our independent judiciary is out of control, with one of the Left Loons on the Supreme Court actually saying that if Trump wins, she’ll leave the country. Immigration is viewed by too many as a natural right, not within the purview of a sovereign gov’t to control in the best interest of citizens. No wonder Trump has done so well. Millions of people are fed up with the cronyism, family dynasties, and incestuous relations between and among the branches and their members.

Keepin' It Real

Don’t forget – the founding fathers also allowed for a free press to protect against a centralized, all powerful, federal government.

It took a while, but the press was eventually politicized.

Obama accomplished two things that will be a part of his legacy: 1) he politicized the IRS and 2) he politicized the Justice Department.

The press was already there, they are just don’t care anymore how obvious they are about it.

2/17 Air Cav

No, they did not allow for a free press as we think of it today. What they did was prohibit Congress from abridging the freedom of the press. If a state wanted to have a state-run press or state censorship, it was free to do so if its own constitution and statutes did not prohibit it. Later–much later–in 1925–the prohibition was extended to state gov’ts c/o the Supreme Court. It has been downhill with respect to Federalism ever since.

2/17 Air Cav

Actually, I’ll retract that. When the Supreme Court unilaterally took upon itself the power to declare enacted law to be unconstitutional, we started down that hill.

Martinjmpr

So it’s been downhill since Marbury v. Madison (1803) then? 😉

That’s a LOOOOONG decline.

Graybeard

I have/had on my bookshelves a copy of the SCOTUS decisions on the 14th Amendment (and others), and was dismayed to see the roots of the decay going back into the 1940s at least. Maybe 1930’s

Hondo

Wanna guess who appointed most of the SCOTUS justices responsible for those decisions?

Think 3 initials.

Graybeard

FDR the SOCIALIST, yessiree.

I do think, as 2/17 says, it went back even further, but it has been a few years since I studied that tome and was being cautious.

2/17 Air Cav

The Supreme Court of the United States is the most secretive, least known, and yet most powerful branch of government. (Of course, when I say branch, it is the uppermost element of the Judicial branch.) If nothing else of any good comes of oBaMa’s emerorship, it will be that more Americans know more about the Supreme Court and its frighteningly undemocratic exercise of power than likely any generation.

2/17 Air Cav

Start in 1925, Graybeard, with incorporation. That was the death knell for federalism as originally designed by the Framers.

2/17 Air Cav

Yes, exactly. The power was assumed, not expressly granted. All else followed. As you know, the SC has historically moved at a snail’s pace. Deliberation and stare decisis and all of that good stuff. No longer. The pretense is gone. They are off and running.

HMC Ret

We voted early last week and the place was packed.  Charles Krauthammer feels it will go overwhelming Trump.  He feels people are simply fed up with politics as usual.  God, please no popular vote vs electoral college vote disparity.

Daisy Cutter

One indicator of what the Clinton Foundation was all about — should Hillary lose the election I’m willing to bet that the huge foreign donations dry up quickly since there is no more potential to gain favors.

If donations continue at the same pace or higher, I’ll eat crow.

Hondo

Depends. She was raking in “dontations” when she was SECSTATE. And then apparently fast-tracking meetings with “representatives” of those “donors” about issues of interest that had US foreign policy impact.

Sounds like “pay-for-play” for me. And if she could do that while SECSTATE, wouldn’t being POTUS make those “dontations” more likely to be of value to the “donors”?

Daisy Cutter

One thing that hits me like fingernails on a chalkboard is on late Tue evening and early Wed morning when the winner always says – “The American people have spoken and they say XYZ”.

Maybe the American people weren’t saying XYZ but by fuzzy logic you’ve arrived at XZY?

Mark my words, you will hear this over and over.

EXAMPLES:

“The American people have spoken and they said they want Obamacare.”

“The American people have spoken and they said they don’t want NAFTA.”

“The American people have spoken and they said they don’t mind pay for play in public office.”

“The American people have spoken and they said they don’t like pay for play in public office.”

“The American people have spoken and they said they want a liberal Supreme Court justice.”

“The American people have spoken and they said they want a conservative Supreme Court justice.”

Alberich

“The American people have spoken and they said Dame la mierda gratis.

(OK, I relied on Google translate.)

The promise of tuition free college education is on its way. I heard Hillary say that so it has to be true. I think it was a condition to get Bernie Sanders voters.

Hopefully, I can get grandfathered in and they will erase my student loan debt.

2/17 Air Cav

Tuition free = Free Cheese. There is no free anything. Trillions in new taxes. That’s what free means.

Hondo

Yep. When it comes to goods and services, NOTHING is truly free. Somewhere, someone paid for that.

What you get free, someone else paid for with money, effort, or both. “Free cheese” does not exist.

Graybeard

Just like Venezuela, verdad?

Hondo

Si, es verdad. En el paraíso socialista Venezula, el gobierno le da todo.

Por esta razón los ciudadanos venezolanos tienen hoy . . . nada.

Martinjmpr

I don’t think they can ever make college “free” but they can certainly make it worthless. Some would say it’s that way now.

When it was rare for middle-class adults to have college degrees, they were a valuable discriminator.

But what is the value of a BA once everybody/anybody can get one?

Graybeard

Same value as the current value of a HSD.

Martinjmpr

Talk of “free college” makes me think of the former Soviet Union. IIRC they had “free” higher education and the (predictible) result was a lot of taxi drivers with doctorates and store clerks with masters degrees in Russian literature.

Didn’t keep their economy from collapsing (shrug.)

Daisy Cutter

*SIGH* No more free college now.

2/17 Air Cav

When someone can rationally explain to me what a penumbra of rights means, how a requirement to purchase health insurance is merely a tax, how a group of lawyers came to determine that there was a timeline for legal and illegal baby killings, and how a fundamental right to same-sex marriage was discovered after being hidden away somewhere in the US Constitution for more than 200 years, you will have performed the impossible. And I will be in your debt the remaining days of my life.

26Limabeans

A “penumbra of rights” are rights enjoyed by those “living in the shadows”.

2/17 Air Cav

Of course, I should add that one must do so within the framework of our Constitution. Oustide of it, I know the answers to all of those queries–and then some.

2/17 Air Cav

One last point, for now. What is the degree of trust and confidence that the general public has in its government? The poll results to that very question are always as you might guess: most people have little or no trust and confidence in government. But here’s the kicker. We can–and sometimes do–replace the current assholes with new assholes. But what about the Supreme Court? The people we have little or no confidence in put them on the Court–FOR LIFE!

2/17 Air Cav

Yes, I am prepping for my bow out.

2/17 Air Cav

Doh. The prep, it turns out, was unnecessary. Long live the Republic!

Ex-PH2

‘a requirement to purchase health insurance is merely a tax’ – um, it’s extortion made legal, 2/17 Air Cav.

Forcing someone to buy a commercial product that is flawed, unusable, and heinously expensive under the guise of ‘insurance’ under any other circumstances is extortion.

Al Capone is wondering why he didn’t think of that.

Joe

You’re starting to sound like a whiny victim.

68W58

Joe-to quote Gunnery Sergeant Hartman-“…whatever you do, don’t fall down. That would break my fucking heart…”

Joe

Come on, ante up Ex-PH2. You don’t want people to think you’ll be one of those freeloader types when you get sick.

Ex-PH2

Wow, you really are stupid, Joe.

What’s the matter? Rocks reject you again?

I have no idea what you meant by what you said, but you really shouldn’t smoke dope and post comments at the same time.

Find a new hobby, OK?

Pinto Nag

At least when you paid for mob protection, you got it!

OWB

Yes, indeed, it do look like it is morning in America once again.
