US trooper killed in Afghanistan

| October 4, 2016

Chief Tango sends us a link to the Washington Post in which they report the death of a US service member during operations against ISIS in eastern Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province in the Achin district near the Pakistan border. The report is that the soldier was dismounted and killed by an IED.

The death occurred as the U.S. military assisted Afghan forces with offensives in two other parts of the country. In the northern city of Kunduz, Afghan troops pushed out insurgents late Tuesday in an operation backed by U.S. air power. In southern Afghanistan’s Helmand province, fighting was underway in both Nawa and Khanashin districts between Afghan troops and Taliban fighters.

The death Tuesday marks the third U.S. combat fatality in Afghanistan this year.

So, I guess the rumors that there is still a war going on in Afghanistan are true. More Americans have been killed in the US by terrorists this year than soldiers killed in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq combined.

RIP.

RIP from a reader in Ireland. Never in service just came to the site through a stolen valour link. May your God be ever good to you and your family.

Welcome, Martin.
We can hoist a Guinness for the fallen in our separate places.
(Except being a Texas German, I’ll be hoisting a Shiner Oktoberfest. Fresh out of Guinness, sadly.)

OldManchu

Where you be in Tx? Texan here myself with Shiner part of my weekly life.

Graybeard

East Texas – Huntsville specifically. We have the H.E.A.R.T.S. Veteran’s Museum, the Texas Prison Museum, and the Sam Houston Museum here – which makes a could couple of educational days.
For those interested in military history, the HEARTS museum is a great place.

David

well, there’s at least a few folks in Houston, too.

Just down the road. A real nice place to be from.

I escaped to the country 25 years ago and don’t plan on going back.

Got to say, though, the children’s hospitals there are the best – saved my grandson’s life.

Bill (a NIMBY/Banana)

I’ve been pissed at the phed gubmint since ’68
(got shot at the same area I’d been shot at in ’66- south of DaNang). It’s fiddlin’ with those who do the shit that is ‘sposed to be done. When are we gonna have a leader that will tell us to go in there, kill the bad guys, blow their crap up, come home and train for more? Don’t tell the baddies how long we’ll be there and don’t “nation build”- they can do it themselves. We’ve got enough of that to do here.
Thank You, and Requiescat in Pace, Soldier.
Semper Fidelis.

That would require someone who’d grown a pair – not a prerequisite for government office, unfortunately.

RIP and prayers up.

R.I.P., Soldier.

When is this idiocy going to stop? Can the DFs that are at the root of this incompetence be replaced with people who know what they’re doing?

Graybeard

Evidently not – judging from current events.
