SGT Derek Calderon; indicted drug dealer
Geet Wilikers sends us a link to the story of Fort Bliss, Texas Sergeant Derek Calderon who sold meth to a to an undercover federal agent in El Paso earlier this year;
According to the complaint affidavit, Calderon, who was living in El Paso, was contacted by phone by a confidential source working with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in South Florida on March 23.
The source told Calderon that he knew someone who wanted to buy “work,” which is a slang term for drugs, the affidavit states. Calderon allegedly asked if they wanted to buy “green (marijuana), white (cocaine) or crystal (methamphetamine).” The buyer was an undercover DEA agent.
Calderon called the undercover agent to discuss the possible purchase of the meth. He told the agent that he lowered the price for a pound from $8,500 to $7,500 as an incentive to purchase the drugs from Texas.
During a March 27 phone call, the undercover agent agreed to travel from Florida to El Paso to buy one pound of meth for $7,500, the affidavit states.
When he showed up for the sale, Calderone was wearing his uniform, you know, with his name tags on it, so it would be hard to deny that it was him who sold the drugs. The bag containing the drugs also had his name sewn into it. Then the rocket surgeon took a video of himself with the bills and put it on Instagram. The serial numbers on the bills in the selfie matched those recorded for the transfer with the federal agent. So, he’s a real criminal mastermind.

I hate to say it, but, I could easily see getting a downgrade on charges for this turd bloom. Depends on his age and previous charges. But I’ve seen a certain LtC JAG Officer get this downgraded to OTH Discharge. He was a wonder to work with before he retired and took that second job with the DON rewriting their Personnel Regs. Great fun. We dropped some serious lead on E-6 and above, but he had a soft spot for E-5’s and below.
Not sure about that. Under 21USC 841, drug offenses typically have minimum sentencing guidelines. There may be a sentence enhancement for mailing the drugs. The purity of the meth could bump him up too. He could escape mandatory sentencing (have his time reduced) if he agrees to identify where he got the drugs and where they were manufactured.

He is IHCA ( In Hands of Civil Authorities) now. The military has jack shit to do with the charges, trail or punishment.
He basically will stay in lockup and they will do an administrative seperation when he is sentenced. I imagine there are regulations in place that reduce him in rank and give him an OTH.

Some time ago, I witnessed the military ask for jurisdiction to prosecute and try a case (though not cases like federal drug cases). The punitive discharge (BCD or DD) at the end of the court-martial not only carried the felony conviction but also guaranteed the servicemember didn’t walk away with an OTH.
But you’re right – they could admin separate him for commission of a serious offense after the district court hammers his ass, but he’d still walk out with an OTH when he probably deserved a DD or BCD.
I guess the reasoning is that he did this crap off post and The Feds will foot the bill for hammering his ass. His felony conviction will be just as much or actually more than a GCM.

It ended up Vinnie the Rat had been stealing Shit left and right from the motor pool, DRMO and every where else. He had a storage unit out in Vista and tried to sell a generator to an undercover CID agent. The Storage unit,,, and two others was stuffed with stolen gear and equiptment. He also was behind torching the office of the recieving barracks and the base laundry after he took a shitload of uniforms and computers and printers from them.
When he was taken in he told the CID agent “Hey I can give you names” The CID agent told him “Fuck off, you are the motherfucker we spend a whole career trying to catch.

I served at Bliss back when the 3rd ACR was there. We had a couple petty thieves, a few guys popped for mary jane, and one who had slipped through the net in the pre don’t ask don’t tell days get busted for selling ass on Dyer Street, but nothing quite like this fellow.
