Kyle Carpenter charged in hit-and-run
Medal of Honor recipient retired Marine Corporal Kyle Carpenter, was arrested for leaving the scene of an accident when he struck a pedestrian in a crosswalk in Columbia, South Carolina earlier last month, according to Fox News;
Authorities said Carpenter, 26, pulled over and turned on his hazard lights, but never got out of his vehicle. As the 18-year-old pedestrian walked to the side of the road, Carpenter left.
The man suffered abrasions and a leg injury and was treated at the scene by EMS, WLTX reported.
There was no evidence Carpenter or the victim was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the incident, authorities said.
Carpenter earned the Medal of Honor when he jumped on a grenade that was tossed onto a roof that him and his partner, Corporal Nicholas Eufrazio were occupying, Carpenter’s actions saved the life of Eufrazio and resulted in countless operations to save Carpenter from his injuries. Carpenter turned himself into Columbia police and he’s cooperating with the investigation.
Fellow Marine and Medal of Honor recipient, Dakota Myer wrote last night on Facebook;
Sending thoughts and prayers to my brother Kyle Carpenter today. Kyle is a man of the upmost [sic] character and man that I look up to. Instead of jumping to conclusions right now, we need to show this man our love and support.

From what I read he wasn’t “arrested” in the classic sense. He turned himself in once he saw news reports that the pedestrian was in fact injured.
That was not a hit and run. That was a bump, stop and see the guy walk, and drive off.
Kyle was probably adjusting his massive balls when some pussy walked out in front of him.
“Treated at the scene” what a pussy. The poor little guy got a boo boo.
The guy driving the car jumped on a grenade. This little punk can toss my salad.
Welcome back Dave. Nothing like a good cleansing probation.
Well, thank the Gods you are back to your normal self, Hardass.
Don’t do that probie thing again. It’s worrisome.
Where do you see “pussy” in this pedestrian? He got hit by a car, and says it’s no big deal, takes their band-aid, and goes about his business. Now if he’d taken the ambulance ride, gone to the hospital and got the neck brace and lawyer, then I could see your getting upset. But this kid did nothing to you or Kyle. Go toss your own salad, Dave.
Kind of reminds me of my daughter. She was in a similar situation a couple of years ago. Except that she was on life support for a week, and in ICU for three. But ask her about it now, and she’ll tell you, “It was only a Fiat.”
Sorry to hear about your daughter OCT. Mine came down with cancer at 19. I know what it is like to see your daughter in pain and there is not a damn thing you can do about it. Never felt more powerless in my life.
That being said, I will wait and see if the lawyer is not already in the mix. Maybe not, but I will go with the odds in today’s world.
Shit stain got a boo boo and when someone ran the plates he lawyer-ed up. That is where the pussy will come into play.
I have been wrong before…we shall see.
Personally, I would have got out and made some kind of contact with the guy, but that’s just me, and I’m not ready to condemn young Kyle Carpenter. A man who dives on a grenade is not a coward. I agree that his perception was probably, “He’s walking without a limp, he’s okay,” and he voluntarily went to the cops upon hearing that there was an injury. The “leg injury” can’t have been serious if the guy walked away without a limp.
It sounds to me like Carpenter’s conduct was most likely an honest mistake, not an attempt to duck responsibility.
Unfortunately merely stopping in your vehicle then watching to see if the pedestrian can get up and walk around is not sufficient under the law. At a minimum you are expected and required to remain at the scene, render aid or secure same and stay put until information such as name, address, insurance data is exchanged with the pedestrian (or driver of the other vehicle) in any collision. This is basic practices and explained in any drivers ed course as well as the drivers license manual for the state in which you are licensed to drive. I do not condemn Kyle but I also do not excuse him as according to the publicly published data available at this time he made a mistake. It’s time to answer for it and it seems he is doing so. Fortunately there was no serious injury or death so it is really a minor incident but it is still a breach of law.
He could’ve also advised the guy to wear a PT belt, if the guy wasn’t wearing one.
Sounds to me like there’s cause to sue the PT belt manufacturing industry.
I’m confused…was he charged because pedestrians are out of season?
Failed to affix the tag to the ear, and deliver the harvested critter to the game warden station for evaluation and registration.
LOL!. I’m not sure if TAH can handle 2 sarcastic comedians now that Dave Hardin is back at full strength. But carry on SARC, carry on. 🙂
No shit, its bad enough I have to contend with Hobo and his Harem of Honeys, some former PH2 and her erotic recipes, a gaggle of Gun Nutz, Jesus freaks, and the rest of you loons.
Now this guy is trying to steal my thunder.
Don’t worry, jarhead. There’ll only be one “Probie” and tag, you are it. mwahaha…
OMG that was funny. Happy New year all.
TBEW….Tell us some good news. Tell us you still live in Parsons and the ex is getting the exposure he needs. Never did ask, but do you know Danny McFall & family?
I’m familiar with the intersection. Unless I was carrying I probably wouldn’t have stopped either. But all he had to do to comply with SC Law is notify Law Enforcement within 24 hours and all would have been good.
Because what you said is different than in my jurisdiction, I looked up the law in South Carolina:
32-34-7. Duty to give immediate notice of accident to law enforcement officer–Violation as misdemeanor. The driver of any motor vehicle involved in an accident resulting in bodily injuries or death to any person or property damage to an apparent extent of one thousand dollars or more to any one person’s property or two thousand dollars per accident shall immediately, by the quickest means of communication, give notice of the accident to the nearest available law enforcement officer who has jurisdiction. A violation of this section is a Class 2 misdemeanor.
32-34-3. Duty of vehicle operator to stop in case of accident–Information given–Aid to injured persons. The driver of any vehicle involved in any accident resulting in injury or death to any person or damage to property shall immediately stop and give his name and address, and the name and address of the owner and the license number of the vehicle he is driving to the person struck or the driver or occupants of any vehicle collided with and shall render to any person injured in such accident reasonable assistance, including the carrying of such person to a physician or surgeon for medical treatment if it is apparent that such treatment is necessary or is requested by the injured person.
32-34-5. Hit and run accident resulting in death or injury as felony. Any driver of any vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury or death to any person, who fails immediately to stop such vehicle at the scene of such accident and comply with the provisions of § 32-34-3 is guilty of a Class 6 felony, and the Department of Revenue shall revoke the registration receipt of the person so convicted.
I am not seeing “within 24 hours” anywhere. At the same time, I don’t think that the idea that he stopped and saw the guy walking relieves him of the duty to get out and exchange information and determine the extent of the injuries of the person he hit.
No, it doesn’t but the story as written doesn’t say if they spoke either. If they did and the guy said he was ok and Carpenter drove off then I’m not seeing anything going on here
That’s what I get for going from memory. It’s been a long time since i was an LEO.
Now I know what all the stink has been about over at FB… Yea, yea been pre-occupied with other items.
What the fuck ever. That’s more than Killary did and she gets to run for President.
This brings to my memory the accident I had. Was stationed at Fort Knox, training soldiers. One Saturday evening as I was driving back to the post, a drunk driver going the wrong way on the highway hit me head-on. I don’t remember much. I went through nine hours of surgery and four months of hospitalization.
I’m better now. ?
Kyle stopped…
The guy didn’t look injured…
Kyle turned himself in after he found out….
Not a HIT & RUN…
MINOR INJURIES..LET IT ROLL.., KYLES BEEN THROUGH ENOUGH..
These days even stopping can get you murdered as well.
A MOH does not give you an endless get out of jail free card. I’m not bothered that Carpenter didn’t get out of the car as it says the hit guy walked up to it. If Carpenter asked him if he was ok and the guy said something like “yeah, shit you hit me” and Carpenter apologized and drove off then ok. Sounds to me like the guy walked up to the car, Carpenter asked him if he was ok, the guy said yeah and Carpenter had a few choice words about being a dumbass and walking out in front of moving vehicles like your bulletproof and drove off. The guy got his vagina in a twist and the rest followed.
The hit guy may not have called EMS, a by stander may have
I guarantee this is about the pedestrian getting a bill for the ems service and realizing he didn’t want to pay the bill. So then he reported it….
Interesting how many in the public seem willing to give this man a pass and look for every little detail to excuse his actions.
It’s understandable, no one wants to be THAT person that DARES criticize a person that earns the Medal of Honor.
If it were any other high profile figure, I’m certain more people wouldn’t be so scared to criticize his actions.
I just want to know the time delta between the incident and the turning himself in. I’m really glad that it wasn’t a DUI. Driving impaired is for scumbags.
But regarding the facts of the case, nobody can blame the pedestrian for getting checked out. He got hit by a car at least hard enough to be knocked down and he got himself looked over. The EMS bill probably was something significant for a student, and it’s Carpenter’s responsibility to pay it. His car, his (or his insurance’s) liability.
I betcha the 18 year old had his face buried in an iPhone, walked into Carpenter’s vehicle and if asked what he knew about the MoH he would say, “it is a video game”.
