Air Force Academy ignores Mikey and the MRFF
A few weeks ago the mis-named Military Religious Freedom Foundation and their founder, Air Force Academy grad, Mikey Weinstein has been complaining about cadets on the football team who took advantage of the freedom to practice their religion and prayed before a game. From the Chatanoogan;
“It’s a disgrace. It’s a putrid example of fundamentalist Christian supremacy, triumphalism and exceptionalism and it has to stop,” Mr. Weinstein said.
“Those individuals that are dressed in the Air Force uniform, that’s their uniform of the day. They’re members of the military and they are under different rules than the civilian counterparts they’re playing on the field,” he charged, causing the Air Force to immediately call for a Board of Inquiry.
Because the MFers aren’t about religious freedom at all. Well, just before Christmas, the Air Force Academy responded;
“Recently the United States Air Force Academy received a complaint about its football players kneeling in prayer. An inquiry was initiated, which found the football players’ actions to be consistent with Air Force Instruction 1-1 and its guidance on the free exercise of religion and religious accommodation.”
“The United States Air Force Academy will continue to reaffirm to cadets that all Airmen are free to practice the religion of their choice or subscribe to no religious belief at all,” academy officials said in the statement. “The players may confidently practice their own beliefs without pressure to participate in the practices of others.”
Mikey and his penchant for hyperbole compares the Air Force Academy to Pol Pot;
The Air Force Academy’s internal review of this matter is a pathetic sham and transparent farce of the highest order.
Let us not forget that it was hardly a respected, deconflicted and disinterested third party entity or outside agency that inquired into MRFF’s charges against the Academy of unlawful, orchestrated, Christian-sectarian team praying by its football players.
Indeed, having the Air Force Academy’s very own Athletic Dept. essentially “investigate itself” in this sordid unconstitutional matter of fundamentalist Christian triumphalism and supremacy is about as “impartial and effective” as having Pol Pot “investigate” himself for his killing field crimes against humanity or having Bernie Madoff direct the “investigation” of his investment business for allegations of pyramid or Ponzi scheme illegalities.
Maybe if the team busted out their prayer rugs and faced Mecca it would make Mikey feel a little better about the whole thing. Mikey and MFers, on the other hand, need a crying towel and they really need to consider changing the name of their organization to something like the Freedom From Religion Foundation. Or ISIS.

The significant difference is that other people’s beliefs matter to him. Other people’s expression of a faith, where he can perceive it, upsets him. That can only be because, at some level, belief matters to him. That lake of fire is ready and waiting, if for nothing more than his dishonesty.

Fair enough Doc. My issues with Mr. Weinstein are tenacious. It is commonly thought that he is Atheist, which he is not. He is Jewish. He prays to his God several times a day. He has stated that openly several times. Telling you that I am Atheist does not describe what I am but rather what I am not. What I am is Anti-Theist. I have very little respect for religion of any kind. I do however have an abiding respect for the Constitutional right for people to worship as they choose. I have found that pointing out the absurd beliefs people hold because of their religion lets them see religion from a different perspective. Weinstein is funded my many in the Secular Community who believe he is Agnostic or Atheist. I find it ironic that people in the Secular Community that pride themselves on evidence and reason fund a man that is opposed to their principles. It is near impossible to track down exactly how much money is taken by Weintstin from his little Not for Profit Organization but it appears it will be in excess of $300,000 this year. Nearly half of all funds received. His justification for doing so is fallacious. He appears to bill the organization as if he is working 68 hours a week as an Attorney for the group. I have made efforts to contact him directly through his site about the issue. He seems to have lost his voice on the matter. I am unaware of what particular form of Judaism you profess to believe. Your objections to him (all of our objections to him) aren’t because of some religion that he does or does not practice or how does so Judaism doesn’t motivate nor inform what he does. Our objections to Weinstein are because he seeks to unnecessarily limit the rights of others to freely practice religion in public. And he goes out of his way to do so. Okay, so now I need some edumacating. How do you figure his religious practices figure into his equation. My understanding is that his Jewish involvement is very liberal/reformed. I’m quite sure he doesn’t give a hoot about other people’s religion. So it seems to me that is objection to religion in public are based not on religious principals; but on social and political ideology. How do you see his religious beliefs in the equation?
Sorry, I should have checked back earlier. His religious practices come in to play for several reasons. He is funded by many from the Secular Community that are under the impression his is Agnostic or Atheist. Pointing out that he is not by highlighting his religious beliefs brings it to their attention. I have already spoken to several who have contributed to his cause who now will not continue to. There will be some who will continue to. It is all too common for those in the Secular community to be chastised for attacking religious expression. Again, pointing out that he is a Jew demonstrates that this is not an attack by Atheists. He very well may not care about other peoples religion…to some degree. He most certainly does care about these particular people publicly expressing their religious conviction in public. People have a right to free speech, to include expressing their religious practices. Their individual right to pray in public is no less protected than his right to profess being a Jew. It is their way of professing Christianity. I have, and will continue to protect the right for people to worship as they choose and to express that choice in public. I will also use my rights to free speech to point out how bizarre their beliefs actually are. These are not children in this case. They are legal adults, I do not agree with their beliefs but defend their right to have them. College football is played on Saturday. Does his objection to their prayer at a game have anything to do with them playing on his day of Sabbath? Does his practice of Shabbat have anything to do with his choice to object? Just because I’m not a believer doesn’t mean I lack knowledge of the literature, I am reminded of a passage regarding prayer in public.
It’s from Matthew as I recall and if I am quoting my KJV of the bible (yes I the non-believer have several bibles and concordances as well)

I always understood this message to mean if you are indeed a godly man your god knows that without you having to display it when it serves no purpose other than a public display. There are other passages which indicate there are moments for public proclamations, but one wonders how many christians actually read their book of instructions and contemplate the meaning of such passages as this one.
I think it’s really fucking stupid to think your god gives a rat’s ass how you perform on a football field while people who are praying to be granted a few more days of life while fighting cancer are routinely ignored.
But hey, whatever floats your philosophical beliefs in magic boat I guess.
At the end of the day I don’t care if they pray or don’t pray because it seems a colossal waste of time just prior to a game when a more appropriate activity would be to continue keeping the musculature properly warmed while playing a sport responsible for 50% of the 3.8 million concussions and 96% of the catastrophic (fatal or crippling) injuries suffered in high school and college sports. Clearly their god doesn’t much care about football players based on the numbers of them praying versus the number getting injured.
Pray away boys, pray away. The constitution allows you to enjoy whatever delusions help you through the day. I’m not going to sue over this and I’m more baffled than offended.

They could be praying and thanking God for the opportunity to be there. Or thanking him for letting them be able to go to the academy.
Not all praying is asking god for something. Mine is always about thanking him for what I do have.
Then follow Matthew 6:5 and keep it private and do not act as the hypocrites do to be seen of men….if it is indeed thanks to your god for your gifts he requires no public display according to your god’s own gospels….
