Fort Bragg’s newest phony

Fort Bragg

It seems that there was this fellow living in the 3rd Special Forces barracks at Fort Bragg who convinced everyone that he was in a secret squirrel school and that he was EOD. He even gave newbies a lift to inprocessing and he was just generally helpful. Until he got stopped by the MPs for a DUI. Turns out that the first sergeant didn’t know who he was. They did a search of the room that he’d been living in and found a rifle and ammunition. Reportedly it was a .300 WinMag. They also found alert rosters from various units.

Hondo

Yep. I’m guessing a few folks “got some ‘splainin’ to do”.

When I was stationed at Aberdeen Proving Ground, I was put in the Single Soldier barracks, a multi-unit system. I had National Guard SM’s who had been mobilized for gate guard duty in there, instructors at Ordnance School, HHC Soldiers, etc.

Since I was the most senior NCO in the building I got tasked with being in charge of making sure the common area was kept clean and all the rules were being followed. But I was not allowed a list of who was living there.

My solution was to slide a note under everyones door that on the first of the month I was going to randomly wake up five people at 0200 and we would clean out the common areas…unless you would like to volunteer for a different time. The second month I had volunteers.

Shortly after an E-7 type moved in and took over the duties, we had a soldier who had PCSed to another place four months prior, forged his clearing papers, and left the place trashed and his ex-girlfriend still had a working key card (hooking up with soldiers while claiming she was a soldier also, using the place to prove it.)

It is not like it was in 1990 at Drum, where your unit’s Single Soldiers were all housed in the same barracks, and everyone knew everyone and who they answered to.

I reported directly to a GS-11 on that assignment and only had one Officer on my NCOER’s. She did not give a care about the non-work duties, just wanted to make sure the work was done first then “do that green suiter stuff after.” The E-7 who took over after me, got on her bad side by calling the office and telling her she had to release me early to come and help pick up trash in the parking area. (I might have forgotten to tell him about the GS-11 part. 😉

It happens. We had a guy report in to the MP Co. at Ft. Jackson in the 70’s. Claimed he was coming back from Vietnam and had lost all of his records. He was given assignment orders, advanced pay from finance, and put to work on the road. We all knew something wasn’t right. Turned out he was a cook, AWOL from Ft. Campbell. Go figure.

WTF OVER!!

Hack Stone

I have three words; Honorary Barracks Rat.

As a former resident of those very barracks (I was a support guy in 3rd SFG from 92 to 96) I can tell you: The number of times we had a CQ on staff during my time there was exactly zero. There was a battalion and group staff duty but that was in the battalion and group HQ and if they ever came through the barracks, I never saw it (the 3rd group barracks are located about a half mile from group and bn HQ.) Doors were never locked and I normally entered and exited the barracks from a side door so even if there had been a CQ I never would have seen him. What needs to be understood about SF units and barracks is that most SF troops are either too senior to live in the barracks or have dependents, which also means they don’t live in the barracks. The only ones who do live there are the few single E-6’s and below and most of those are in the Support Company. Now when I was there the Support Co. 1SG was in charge of the barracks and I had to receive my key from him. Supposedly he kept the barracks records but it wouldn’t be difficult to imagine that if a support CO 1sg departed and another one wasn’t appointed right away, things could fall through the cracks. Since most of the people living in the barracks were support troops, the battalion and group commander didn’t much care about them and didn’t do much overseeing. I think we may have had one or two inspections in the 4 years I was in 3rd SFG. The last one, almost exactly 20 years ago, was because some skinhead idiots in the 82nd murdered a couple in Fayette-nam and rumors were swirling about soldiers displaying Nazi symbols in their barracks rooms, so the XVIII Corps commander ordered all of his O-6 commanders to tour their soldiers barracks to check for racist symbols. It was the only time I’ve ever seen a barracks inspection by an entire chain of command from… Read more »

General Luck?

Bottom line: This is not hard for me to imagine at all. 😉

During my time in 5th SFG (A) Bn CSM and Company SGM’s walked through barracks daily. I’ve seen a few friends get rocked for having girlfriends living in the barracks but this is a different time. Completely unacceptable to have anyone unauthorized living in the barracks, let alone having a 300 win mag in the barracks. SDO/SDNCO wouldn’t have caught this asshole unless there was a disturbance.

NECCSEABEECPO

Do you not have to show Orders and ID when checking onto the Barracks? Just asking

NECCSEABEECPO

into…

OWB

You’d think so. Stayed in base housing here and there, and remember it being quite a hassle to get in. Of course, I also don’t remember ever staying on a base without a reservation. Can’t imagine that things have deteriorated this much. Scary stuff.

Ex-PH2

Oh, I don’t know, Chief. When I was at Great Mistakes, on duty one night, sound asleep, one of the WAVES on desk duty came and told me some guy in civvies was trying to get into our barracks. I went to sort this out.
He was so intoxicated, he kept sliding down the door to the pavement. I told the on-duty WAVE to call the SPs on him. Probably got drunk at the EMClub and thought he was at his own barracks.

I think that would be harder to do now.

NECCSEABEECPO

You said WAVES. So you were in after 93 correct isn’t that when they opened Grate Lakes up to Females. I think up until then Females only went to Orlando (Disney World boot camp)not sure but that’s how I remember it. I do remember we checked every single ID for everyone that was part of the training.

Ex-PH2

Naw. Bainbridge RTC(W), 1967.

Great Lakes in 1972, THEN down to Orlando. One. Big. Sand pit. Grit in every bit of food ever served. I hated that place.

11B-mailclerk

The Orlando facility was closed, and converted to a development. The neighborhood is now gentrified, not “gritty”. 8 – )

I am familiar with the former base, only because there used to be a cool gaming and comics shop nearby, called “Enterprise 1701”. (now called “Sci Fi City” , elsewhere.)

Oops. Geeked out there, didn’t I?

jonp

Forget that. Don’t you have to show ID to get onto post? Yes you do.

Hondo

The Army WTF Moments article says the guy had a fake CAC. If the forgery looked good and post wasn’t using scanners to verify the CAC for entry one day, well, . . .

GDContractor

I bet the guy was a fired AFEES contractor or something… probably screwing some chick in billeting.

Dave Hardin

You are always so understanding. As I sit with 13 days and a wake up in my forced serenity mode, you have been a true inspiration.

Peace and love to all the world.

GDContractor

I make awesome gravy too. 😉

Thunderstixx

Get a friggin’ room you two…

Claw

My bet it was SFC Coombs, the Wal-Martian.

Green Thumb

Maybe we need to sign this guy up.

Promote him to Field Grade or Senior-Level NCO and send him to the Pentagon.

Seems like he was doing a better job than some of the assclowns in charge now.

spd0302

If this clown can burrow into a temp barracks for 8 months, wtf else is going on in that barracks?

C2Show

That’s pretty damn amazing. I was just at bragg/Pope Field about 3 moonths ago. The place has way too many entrances and just too big to account for guest, even fake ones.

C2Show

LOL Large cache of Porn…..jesus.

68W58

He clearly established his joe credentials.

FatCircles0311

We had some civilian squatters in our barracks before. Friends of one of our marines. They were caught very quickly though

Wtf army indeed.

Just An Old Dog

Damn who is going to fill the billet of Hobo in Special Forces now?

sapper3307

I bet he had a great collection of soldiers social security numbers. And all the other information you need for some I.D theft.

MedicWulf

He was more devoted than some of the soldiers I’ve seen lately

Nick

This. So true. Recruit that loser and make him earn the right to be in those barracks. Lol
