LA School system closed due to “credible threat”
According to Fox News, who has a fleet of choppers in the air with cameras pointed at schools in LA waiting for one of them to explode, the LA County school district has closed their more than 1,000 facilities and turned away nearly 700,000 students out of an “abundance of caution” due to a “credible threat” to students;
LA Unified School District Superintendent Ramon Cortines said the threat involved backpacks and said every school in the 700,000-pupil district would be searched.
“I think it is important that I take this precaution based upon what has happened recently and what has happened in the past,” Cortines said.
The school officials said that they regularly get these types of threats all of the time, but that there was something specific about this particular threat (reportedly an email to a school district official) that raised concerns to this point. I guess they’re searching all of those facilities and the school buses.
Seems to me this is a pretty good terrorist tactic, too.

One phone call yields millions in disruption… cost effective for sure.
Now if we only knew what 21 from 42 meant….
As I was going to St Ives
I met a man with seven wives
Every wife had seven sacks
Every sack had seven cats
Every cat had seven kittens
Kittens, cats, sacks, wives
How many were going to St Ives?
In all seriousness, I do hope they head this off and we don’t have another San Bernadino incident x10.
42! that’s the answer to everything!
Glad the threat came via email and not social media. Civil liberties win!
LMAO!
1,000 facilities need to be searched? Wonder how long that will take?
My “spidey senses” tell me something is in the works while all this is going on.
Isn’t this the plot of one of the Die Hard movies?
The one with Samuel L Jackson.
I will lay odds, some punk is laughing his ass off and got a day off from school for this stupid prank!!
Until they track his ass down and arrest him. Then I’d bet Mommy and Daddy will be paraded out with little Johnny for the apology tour.
Chester A. Arthur….
700,000 yutes on the street with nothing to do.
Yeah, this ought to be interesting.
I’ll take finals week for $1,000 Alex.
Somebody’s paper wasn’t ready at the due date…
I’ll buy that for a dollar, GDContractor. In my line of work we’ve had idiots call in bomb threats to get out of going to work with a hangover. Play stupid games…
You are exactly right!
This was my very first thought when it popped up on the news this morning.
They had a ‘credible threat’ that covered 1000 schools? YGBSM.
Terrorist tactic or just a good way to get a day off from school?
Early start for Christmas Vacation?
Could be, those yutes are resourceful.
I’d be watching for something to happen at someplace other than a school while law enforcement is busy dealing with the school threat.
Report said a school official got an email from “overseas”. Target was to be “children in schools” (plural!)! Superintendent is trying to avoid the next logical progression from Paris and San Bernardino (bombs instead of bullets)!
yeah, and we know that no technodweeb student in the school system there could phony up an e-mail’s mailing address.
That’s why all those spam mails I get that claim to be from some hot momma wanting to play always seem to have addresses like @mafia.ru
Wait, are you telling me all those Russian women aren’t really that hot? Or that they aren’t really wanting to come here to be with me?
I don’t know which is the bigger bummer.
Whatever happened to that brave, “We won’t let terrorists change our way of life”?
Yeah, that shit went right out the window, when some set of lacy undies realized it was THEIR tender ass on the line…
According to Fox, New York School District got the same threat but didn’t find it credible enough to react.
Many Northern School Districts have snow days planned into their school years, are they now going to have “Threat Days” planned?
the recent Baltimore “uprising”, or whatever they are calling it, was aided by closing the schools early. “They” thought there might be trouble due to the funeral for the martyred Freddie Grey. Then, the MTA closed the hub for several bus lines for several schools shortly after. Lots of yutes milling around, feeling their oats. There has been no explaination so far as to why the (interestingly) UNRELATED events occured. Me, I’ll take incompetance for $50. Oh, and no communication between the two agencies, but maybe that’s just me…..
I would feel bad if a school got blown up. Think of the cost to the school district taxpayers to float a bond to rebuild that school.
BUT. . . . I would laugh my freakin’ ass off if a “news” helicopter, hovering nearby, waiting for a story to happen, were to get caught in that school explosion, crash and burn, and become a news story in itself.
(But that’s just me. I’m easily amused)
Seems NYC received a similar threat, but had a very different response.
‘NYPD Commissioner William Bratton said the person who wrote the note claimed to be a jihadist, but made errors that made it clear the person was a prankster. FBI sources tell Fox News they and the LAPD also deemed Monday’s emailed threat “non-credible.”‘

Ah, yes. High school.
We used to get bomb threats, and joke about hijacking a bus to Cuba.
It’s a lot easier to refuse to take this incident seriously, after nothing blew up.
Oh, haven’t you guys figured this out yet? It was Ferris Bueller, Jr.
Pop Bueller did the same thing back in the day. He just didn’t shut down entire school districts.
Meanwhile, here in Denver all schools are shut down due to a successful attack by a white terrorist known as “the snow monster.”
And yet, school children fail to be outraged. Go figure.
Yeah, I just spend a couple of hours shoveling about a foot of ‘global warming, the greatest threat to the US’.
BTW, Where were all the teen-aged boys with snow shovels in my neighborhood? Don’t they want to make a bit of cash for the holidays? Geez! And why does this always happen when my husband is at work?
Oh, and chivalry is dead. I’m talking to the men a couple of houses down with the snowblower, thanks so much for your help /sarc. How come none of you TAH guys are my neighbors?
As for schools, I say homeschool, then you know your kids are well protected.
What is this ‘Chivalry’ you speak of? Lock yourself out of your house/apartment on a Saturday night, call a locksmith, and you’ll see what happened to ‘chivalry.’ It’s not dead, now it just comes with a hefty pricetag!
Yeah, we got buried, too. It just means you have to go out a little earlier to uncover and warm up the car to get to work on time!
In NYC we enlisted all school aged children in the dragnet and the schools remained open!
We don’t frighten easily here!
NYPD CT and FBI NY JTTF are the best in the bidness!
I feel a bit sorry for the poor bastiches who have to make the call after a threat like this.
They take it seriously, empty the schools, and are mocked for being chicken$hit.
Or they ignore it, something does happen, and they’re vilified as in the SB shooting.
It’s easy to mock them after the fact, but there’s no way of knowing the “truth” beforehand.
You’re telling us that the police, after 15 YEARS of dealing with terrorists, can’t trace an email to its source? Couldn’t have narrowed down the possibilities of targets in the school system? Had to, in fact, shut down 1000 schools for one email?? No Casey, we’re ‘mocking’ the reaction of some perfumed prince of a bureaucrat who mentally dove under his desk to keep from actually thinking, analyzing, and making an informed decision about the situation, like he’s paid to do. The fact is, if we don’t realize that this is the kind of situation that is going to come up now and in the future, then the terrorists have indeed won, because they’ll have us cowering in our basements in no time with tactics like this — and worse.
So suppose said bureaucrat made a decision that the threat was not credible, or limited only to location “x”, and kept the schools open. Location “y” gets hit. Bureaucrat went left, terrorists went right, and people died as a result. Would you defend that bureaucrat for having good intentions, or would you be among the chorus that wishes many a session of gangbang prison rape and financial ruin on said bureaucrat?
This is the natural end result of a society that has become zero tolerance on risk and adamant on laying blame for any and all incidents, foreseeable or not. These guys may get mocked in social media and the shutdown may have cost a few hundred kilobucks, but that’s nothing compared to the nightmare of litigation that would be the end result if they had not acted how they did and something bad happened.
i don’t get why the terrorists keep targeting NYC and Cali. Those two bastions of liberal ideology are mostly America haters too that keep trying to give, give, give to the poor Islamic jihadist that only need jobs so that they can help stop global climate change. (/sarc) it would make sense for them to target “red” states, counties, etc that have proud Americans that consider these jack-wagons an enemy.
Maybe I’m trying to make sense out of something that ain’t meant to make sense???????
Yeah, when you have lived here and know what you are talking about, get back to me.
Note:
1. Of all states in our great Union from the top to bottom where do MOST come from, over the years and to and through today!
2. If you only knew.
3. Your comments are filed under ‘Clueless to the Realities of MY Great City and County’.
4. If you want to counsel us here in NYC with respect to the threat, perhaps you should be edjumicated on the how and why the threat IS so real here!
5. ‘Til then, perhaps the closing of and the control of the yap valve may be in order.
6. Bethcha’ a bag full of NYC bagels you have never stood in the very place where George Washington had his inaugural mass in St. Paul’s Chapel, or where he recited his inaugural address on Wall Street, or where the Declaration of Independence was first read in NYC, or ever stood on the rumble of WTC … I have.
But what do I know …
I did and have too.
Maybe you missed the /sarc.
I said “most”,not all. After all, these two locations are where “they” refer to the rest of us as the “fly-over” country. So while I know that there are great, patriotic Americans in both NYC and California, they are also the most left leaning parts of our country.
I understand the threat is real. Never said it wasn’t. My point was that I wonder why the terrorists focus on the 2 locations nearly everytime when the many other locations across the country would actually give them the headlines in the media they so desperately seek and instill the shock and fear among the citizens that is their goal.
Ok my bad!
Merry Christmas!
Terrorist win.
I can’t believe they are saying the NY threat was not credible because the email message didn’t capitalize the a in allah. So he wasn’t a true muslim but terrorism has nothing to do with islam. (Small i small m )
This is in my backyard and hits hard as I have a child who attends classes at LAUSD. Just like the San Bernardino incident, Twitter and overseas news agencies had better information faster than was being release by anybody locally. The threat was emailed around 10PM PST and was sent to school board members, some who have not served on the board for a couple of years as well as somebody who has been dead for some time. My first thought was somebody trying to duck finals, but they would have known the current school board members. the sender’s return email address had a reference to male genitals. They also did not capitalize the A Allah. a half ass attempt to make it look like it came from Germany. There were a couple of other things that should have screamed ‘BOGUS” at 3AM, the decision was made to close the schools, but for all the forms they have you fill out with email, cell, etc, nobody thought of sending out texts, leave voicemail, etc to the parents so they wouldn’t take the kids to school. somebody thought they should involve the mayor, so he was notified around 5AM. his kids go to an LAUSD school as well. once the investigation was turned over to LAPD, FBI, etc…from LA School PD, information started to get processed. I believe every other city/school district that also got the threat didnt buy it. off the record, LAPD said it was the wrong call to close the schools.
From what I read neither LAPD or FBI took it as a credible threat, I think maybe some teachers wanted a ski day up at Big Bear.
