Possible Washington Navy Yard Shooting

| July 2, 2015

Multiple news reports indicate another possible active shooter at the Washington Navy Yard.  No official confirmation yet.

More to follow.

Added:  reports indicate buildings nearby have been evacuated, nearby roads closed, and employees who have not yet reported to work have been notified to remain home.

Added:  first security sweep of area reportedly complete; no evidence of gunman.  Second sweep ongoing.

Added:  reports now say no shots were fired.  However, the compound apparently remains on lockdown.

Added:  appears to have been a false alarm.  No injuries, and DC police are now reporting that the incident appears to have been a false alarm (no shots fired) and occurred because “loud noises frightened someone”.  (Link includes pretty decent timeline of the incident as of 0925 EDT.)

Assuming that’s true, that’s good news – and given the facility’s recent history, I guess it’s at least marginally understandable.   But I don’t think I’d call in “shots fired” to 911 unless I was pretty damn sure what I heard was indeed gunfire.

Added:  maybe not false alarm after all.  Reports now say surveillance video shows 2 people jumping fence at Navy Yard.  Police are now reportedly “storming” 2nd building.  All clear NOT given.

Added:  Fox now reporting NMCC confirms shots fired.  Unclear when this was reported.

Added:  Fox and local CBS TV website now reporting no evidence of shooter or victims. All clear still not given for Navy Yard.

Added:  FBI reportedly has indicated all clear.  Looks to have been a false alarm.

Final Entry:  no shots appear to have been fired.  ATF agents on scene speculate that construction noise nearby may have prompted initial “shots fired” report.

. . .

Bottom line:  looks like a false alarm – which is good news.  But you would think people might be able to tell the difference between construction noise and gunshots.

Then again, in many big cities a huge fraction of the population buys the “guns bad” bull, and has never actually fired a gun.  And if they’ve lived a decent part of town all their life, they may never have actually heard one fired other than on TV.  So they might actually not know what gunshots nearby sound like.

All’s well that ends well, I guess.

Good thing DC has all those strict gun laws.

B Woodman

This is the definition of insanity; repeating the same thing and expecting different results.

Ex-PH2

But… but… but… I thought WDC had all those strict gun control thingies going on. How is this possible?

That noise! Is the sky falling after all?

AW1Ed

Extra security present at NAS Pax River’s main gate this morning, with ARs.

Thunderstixx

The FBI and other agencies are bracing for what is feared to be one of the biggest days of terror since 9-11 as indicated in the chatter out there.
So, to celebrate that, I am calling all my friends to carry a concealed weapon to put a stop to their shenanigans!

Old Trooper

I don’t know. They’ve been talking about it for a couple of weeks, publicly, which leads me to believe that whatever they were hearing as “chatter” was just bs to get them all whipped up and give an indication to the bad guys what our capabilities are, etc.

AW1Ed

Just got official word that WNY is currently on lockdown, all gates closed, and the activity is in BLD 197.

GEE WHIZ, DC has all kinds of strict Gun Control Laws, why won’t the criminals obey them like everyone else? /sarc

dnice

Hope all r safe down there… I read that police are “swarming” – are the police/feds ready to respond if it’s a diversion?

And I wish there was a national waiver this weekend for concealed carry.

Ex-PH2

Latest was FBI gave the ‘all clear’.

If it was a car or truck backfiring, which is rather rare now, that could account for it. But if it was someone setting off firecrackers there, that is so not cool.

I remember when we used to be able to enjoy our holidays, not spend them worrying about terrorists.

Old Trooper

I still enjoy the holidays and my threat level on this weekend isn’t any higher than it was for Memorial weekend.

2/17 Air Cav

Love the threat levels and the cautions from the Department of the Fatherland. Means a lot. What the hell does that mean for individual citizens? Stay at home? Boycott pork hot dogs? For lone-wolf terrorists, the best defense is a personal weapon but, for some reason, the government will never point that out. I am also wondering whether holiday leave will be cancelled for all Federal LE agencies of any stripe, FEMA, and, of course, our national security team members. (Right. Pass the mustard, please. More salad?)

Ex-PH2

There’s a threat level?

2/17 Air Cav

Yes, I believe it is DEFCON 3, Fuchsia, raised from DEFCON 4, Chartreuse a day ago. If your alertness isn’t heightened, please heighten it. Oh, and stay away from NC beaches. The terrorists are incognito, disguised as sharks.

Ex-PH2

(Heavy sigh.) And just as I was about to embark on a ramble through the Sand Hills of western Nebraska.

Who would have possibly thought on July 2nd (the actual date of the vote on independence, by the way) that FIREWORKS could be a possible explanation. It’s not like there are any holidays around now at which one could expect to hear such a thing.

Carlton G. Long

Of course they couldn’t have signed it on July 4th…they were obviously closed that day.

Hack Stone

Reminds me of the coincidence of Jesus being born on Christmas. What are the odds? 364 to 1, if you need to know.

Flagwaver

I say it was probably some E-3 with illegal fireworks.

2/17 Air Cav

Who clearly disregarded the sign at the gate, “Combat Veteran Works Here. Please Be Courteous With Your Fireworks (and small arms fire.)”

Flagwaver

Don’t you mean the sign that says no explosives, fireworks, or idiotic stuff an E-3 thinks is cool?

SFC D

It requires an E-7 at minimum to properly screw things up with explosives.

Flagwaver

Have you never seen Joe in demo training? A couple E4s in my unit decided to see what wrapping detcord around a tree a few times would do. That wasn’t as bad at what they did to munitions they were told to blow in Iraq. Eight or nine wraps of detcord, they blew it, and then had to dive under their vehicles because they weren’t far enough away from the airborne aftermath of their stupidity.

OWB

But isn’t it fun to watch them running around, having the media reporting endlessly each time one of them farts? Great training exercise for somebody, but not particularly useful for us normal folks, ya know, the folks they are supposed to be protecting.

Should we guess what’s going on behind the curtain as they demand our attention on this distraction? There’s that give away of nuclear secrets thing going on with Iran. And the Cuban diplomatic relations normalization. Naw, probably not either of those but something else entirely.

Ex-PH2

I’m sorry, but I simply cannot resist.

Too bad the District of Criminals has such mouse-fart-squeaking tight gun “laws”. The only reason the po-po should be called in is to mark the chalk outlines and pick up the corpses of the perps.

jonp

I duck and cover whenever I hear a nail gun. Common to mistake it for a Barrett.

Devtun

No Jewelry stores robbed while the police were diverted? Y’know….never let a crisis go to waste.

2/17 Air Cav

I watched no news coverage of this. I try to watch the news sparingly–and local news not at all. Anyway, I’m in the car this evening and the ABC news comes on and this is the lead story. Mind you, it’s 6 p.m. Well, hell, no news apparently is news as they spent a minute or more talking about how utterly prepared they were! Yep, everything ran according to Hoyle. No shit. There was no shooter, but that didn’t stop the czarina of D.C. and various other schmucks from saying what a wonderful job they all did.

2/17 Air Cav

Did you see the morning news? If not, catch it at noon. There was NO SHOOTING at the Washington Navy Yard again today!
