Still Fudgin’ Numbers All These Years
Jonn’s article yesterday got me thinking. And that’s sometimes not such a good thing – as regular TAH readers know all too well. (smile)
So, with appropriate apologies to Paul Simon: an ode to today’s VA.
Still Fudgin’ Numbers All These Years
That VA manager
In his office, right
He seemed indiff’rent and
Petty (though he smiled)
As he grabbed for more resources
To build his empire dear
Been fudgin’ numbers many years
Been fudgin’ numbers many years
He’s not the kind of man
Who enjoys making waves
He loves to live by
His rulebook
And he ain’t no fan of changes
Or reporting bad news clear
Just fudges numbers every year
Just fudges numbers every year
Four in the PM
Nodding, and
Yawning
Droning his life away
He’ll never worry
Why should he?
It’s all gonna fade
Now he’s got that corner office
Plays God every day
He swears he’ll clear that backlog
Some damn way
But he will not be replaced, no
By a more competent peer
Still fudgin’
Yes, fudgin’
Still fudgin’ numbers all these years
I wish I could in good conscience say the above is satire. But after Jonn’s article yesterday – and the recent “secret waiting list” scandals, plus the VA’s longtime covering for hundreds of fake POWs that Jonn’s written about repeatedly – I’m not really sure it is.

Lying in the military is common, Army War College study says

Doesn’t surprise me. One of the finer civilian executives I’ve ever known put it best: “You will get what you measure.”
His immediate point was to stress how important it was to select the correct thing to measure. But the corollary is this: since people want to “please the boss” – if the actual results are bad, sometimes that measurement will be bogus.
I read the War College study this morning in its entirety. I found myself nodding in recognition several times along the way. A major point of the study is that the Army piles on so many requirements that leaders find themselves having to self-prioritize, deciding what’s really critical to focus on, and what can be safely fudged or pencil-whipped in order to say that we met requirements. In doing so, we’ve created a culture in which white lies are not only accepted but, on some level, almost expected.
Lots of music works here, Hondo as always great job with this adjustment and no apologies to PS needed from my perspective.
Meet the new boss, same as the old boss…
The song remains the same…
Same old song and dance….
Liar…
The list is potentially endless…and sadly appropriate.
