Coast Guard NCO fakes his suicide, indicted
West Virginia Metro News tells the story of 33-year-old Larry Shelby who was indicted, along with his wife and a friend, for a hoax and fraud. Apparently, the Coast Guardsman thought he had released some sort of information and the Coast Guard was investigating the incident, so he did what the rest of us would do, if we were completely stupid – he faked his own suicide. His wife joined him in the fraud and hid him in his basement.
The U.S. Coast Guard spent more than $100,000 looking for him. In addition to the U.S. Coast Guard, Maryland state police, the National Park Service, the Berkeley County sheriff’s department, Harpers Ferry police, Martinsburg police, Chesapeake Search & Rescue K-9 and Mid-Atlantic D.O.G.S., Inc. were part of the search.
In February 2014, according to federal prosecutors, Larry Shelby returned to his Martinsburg home where he hid out until June. At first, Ihlenfeld said, the kids did not know their father was hiding out in the family basement.
“Eventually, (Larry and Karen Shelby) surprised the children and advised their three children that their father was actually alive, but they instructed them not to tell anyone that he was in fact living in their house,” Ihlenfeld said.
Yeah, well, none of that worked and now he faces 16 years in prison while his wife and his friend are looking at more than ten years in prison, you know, after they’re presented with their “Parents of the Year” Award.

He should have gone to his command and informed them that might HAVE happened. At least then, he might of had to paint lines or mow grass or scrub down patrol boats. What a bunch of damn, dumb m’fers! There is no face palm for this…

His actions make me think that what info got released was not an accident. He did something and was trying to cover it up by this bizarre escapade. You don’t release classified info accidentally.
All that work just to avoid an ass chewing, and in the end he still gets the ass chewing, plus loss of pay and benefits and time in prison.
Screw up? Fess up. Pay up. Kept me out of the jackpot more than once. Everyone screws up. I’m surprised three people in the world thought this would be a good idea. I find this sad.
Does this mean he will be eligible for POW benefits from the VA when he gets out of prison???

…Similar incident about 20 years ago in the USAF – A PJ goes missing after a bike ride (two of his buddies damn near die looking for him) and he’s declared dead. A few years later Dead Guy shows up quite hale and hearty, claiming that he faked his own death because he was “afraid he was going to abuse his kids the way he’d been abused.”
Okay – USAF puts him up for a few weeks while they straighten out the paperwork. The night before he was to be let go, the LE’s show up and place him under arrest for theft of government property: i.e. and to wit, one field jacket, which he’d had with him when he disappeared. Now that he was a guest of Your Federal Government for an indeterminate amount of time, that gave AFOSI the breathing space to connect him to a bank robbery that he’d pulled after his disappearance.
He’s probably just getting out of Leavenworth about now.
