Yemen government collapses
While everyone is focusing on the President’s big speech last night (that I completely ignored), one of our allies in the war against terror is struggling to survive the night. In Yemen, Shiite rebels have overrun the capitol and are shelling the executive residence, according to Fox News;
The Shiite rebels, known as Houthis, took over the capital Sanaa in September as part of a long power struggle with Hadi and effectively govern several other cities as well.
It was unclear whether they intend to seize power altogether or allow the internationally backed president to remain in office.
In a lengthy speech aired by the group’s TV network, rebel leader Abdel-Malek al-Houthi said that “all options are open” and that the escalation “has no ceiling” if Hadi does not speed up implementation of a U.N.-brokered peace deal.
That deal would grant the Houthis greater power over a commission that has been assigned to draft a new constitution and outline a new federal system. Critics of the Houthis say they are using the U.N. deal as a pretext to seize more power.
Reuters recounts President Obama’s words in September;
President Barack Obama cited Yemen as a terrorism success story in a September speech outlining his strategy against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, which involves targeted U.S. strikes on militants with the cooperation of a friendly ground force. Obama called it an approach “that we have successfully pursued in Yemen and Somalia for years.”
But 10 days after the president uttered those words, the Iran-backed Houthi militia swept into Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, seizing a share of power. On Tuesday, those same rebels seized the presidential palace and shelled the president’s residence, leading Yemeni officials to warn of a coup.
It’s like the kiss of death – every time the president talks about an ally and their successes, they run into trouble at home.
Of course, the folks who killed 13 Parisians last week claim they were supported by the local Yemeni al Qaeda branch, despite the fact that this White House has been droning the crap out of them.
According to CNN, things are pretty confusing there today;
One rebel unit with a tank stood guard outside President Abdu Rabu Mansour Hadi’s residence in Yemen’s capital on Wednesday, amid uncertainty over who is in control of the volatile nation after two days of turmoil.
One militiaman told CNN that “the people” are now president of Yemen.
Hadi is said to be inside the residence but it is unclear what is happening inside, or whether he has any loyal guards with him.
A senior leader of the Houthi resistance movement, Abdullah Shabaan, told CNN earlier that the “President’s personal security left him, which forced us to gather hundreds of fighters from our security to ensure he is safe.”
But don’t worry, the UN is on the job;
Members of the U.N. Security Council were briefed by the U.N. special adviser on Yemen, Jamal Benomar, and later issued a statement expressing their concern about the crisis.
I’m sure their concern will bear fruit in regards to the coup very soon. Any minute now.

Yet another terrorist regime rises as our “Fearless Leader” sits on his thumbs. By the way, how’s that war in the middle east doing? Are ya sure we won?
I think you are correct. The pResident blows his load by talking about our future plans with enough time between the speech and implementation for our enemies to kibosh those plans.
So the UN is sending them a strongly worded letter?
Telling them that the UN is very, very angry with them, and threatening them with the dreaded nonbinding resolution.
A stiff note on cardboard! That ought to frighten the hell out of them.
The Houthis aren’t listed in my Fantasy Football league roster. Are they JV?
Semi pro.
Yemen has a long history of turmoil. It does seem when this administration publicly support some fledgling government things do not go well. Makes me curious about places like Tunisia. In 2012 declared it will not support making sharia the main source of legislation in the new constitution, maintaining the secular nature of the state.
With a population almost completely Muslim and a long history of harboring militant Arab interests they wouldn’t support a secular government.
Maybe they are figuring out that allowing religious beliefs of any kind to rule the land is counter productive to peace.
Or, maybe Obama and Iran not giving a shit what goes on there is responsible for their progress.
Curious if there are any lurkers out there that might have an inside track on all that.
“While everyone is focusing on the President’s big speech last night (that I completely ignored),” Hey, you too? I thought I was the only one with the TV muted so I could make running jokes about what I was imaging to come out of his six sided mouth.
Yea I’m sure our allies in that part of the Muslim world are sending messages to the White House this morning saying, “Please and thank you but…don’t talk about us in public to try and help. It just never works out well for us. As-salamu alaykum. So please just keep those cards and letters….”
I was watching telenovelas on Telemundo. I’d rather watch Ana Lorena Sanchez than the president.
Me too. And I don’t even speak Spanish!
From the pics I saw this a.m., Justice Ginsburg had the right idea regarding Øbola’s SOTU, she slept through it. I just changed the station.
It’s just as well I don’t watch things like that. I couldn’t even make it through the article on MSN this morning about it, without my blood pressure suffering from it.
Honest to God, I don’t know how he does it. If I lied like that, lightening would strike.
Found a station that had Roller Derby on.
This is why I make a lot of use out of Netflix. Can’t interrupt my stream for shit
Fortunately, I saw this announcement online before it hit the airwaves (the what?).
I figured that, since it was mentioned as a threat about 6 weeks ago by Reuters or AFP or someone, it was already underway then but no one in Foggy Bottom was paying attention.
I did not watch that speechifyin’ either, but I wondered just out of touch with reality someone can be to actually take credit (as reported this morning) for the success of things he opposed. That just blows the lid off the nutball parade for me.
When the Final Trumpet sounds, I have no doubt that Obama will take credit for the tune that’s played.
Exact transcript of the State of the Union address follows:
“Subjects–I mean comrades–ahem–oh yeah, uh, my fellow Americans.
“I’m awesome. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. It’s all Bush’s fault.
“If you like your plan, you can keep it. Pay no attention to the fact that my fingers were crossed when I said that. If you don’t keep your health plan, it’s Bush’s fault.
“ISIS is Bush’s fault. Blah, blah, blah. I’m sending fifty-thousand more troops to Iraq. They will be unarmed because they won’t be in combat. Trust me. By the way, it’s all good with Russia. And Iran won’t build nukes. Israel sucks.
“Blah, blah, blah, Bush’s fault, blah blah blah, pay more taxes, blah, blah, blah.
“To properly implement the new standards of fairness in the military, I recommend the appointment of Rosie O’Donnell as Secretary of Defense, and intend to give her absolute authority over DoD, with the power to order on-the-spot executions as she sees fit. Bush’s fault.
“Are we done yet? I’m missing valuable golf time.”
Whew. I’m glad the U.N. issued a statement. That’ll help get this thing under control. Thanks U.N.
And the reason anyone gives a shit about Yemen is what?
Geography, and possibly history. Otherwise, there’s not really much there there.
Yemen borders the Red Sea, with major shipping lanes coming directly out of Suez.
In fact, Yemen sits in the heel of the Arabian peninsula, directly across from Djibouti, which is bordered by Eritrea to the north, Ethiopia to the west and Somalia to the south. Sudan is to the north of Eritrea.
It’s quite easy to conceive of more and worse piracy by Somalis if they think they now see a friend in Yemen.
The UN can send its idiotic scolds to the Yemeni if they want to, but the economy in that country is so bad, I will not be surprised if piracy gets an uptick.
“One militiaman told CNN that “the people” are now president of Yemen.”
“the people are president” = communism
This will not end well for ANYBODY involved.
“It’s like the kiss of death – every time the president talks about an ally and their successes, they run into trouble at home.”
Ya see? Netanyahu should be glad that Obama snubs Israel. ;-P
I’ve made a point of watching the SOTUs, and I finally decided to skip this one, but my high school senior had an assignment to watch it …..
We settled in with the TV and a laptop screen split between the transcript of the speech (I am glad somebody decided to do this) and the tweets from over at Legal Insurrection.
My kid read the speech along with Obama. Before the speech, he said it was important, because it’s the President of the US speaking to the people. Afterward, he said it was boring. I think he had been expecting something serious, and he got BS. I thought this President wasted one of a President’s great opportunities.
Once you connect the dots about Hussein being a Shiite Muslim this, Egypt, Iran, and which terrorists are being targeted begins to make sense.
Barack The Destroyer, Everything he touches turns to a lump of shit in his hands
