David Masciotra: you don’t protect me

| November 9, 2014

David Masciotra

David Masciotra, you know, one of those stank-ass hipster doofuses who thinks he has something worthwhile to say about veterans and actively serving troops vomits on to the pages of Salon to lecture the American people on how much he is ungrateful that American troops are responsible for the environment in which he lives, you know, an environment that allows him to criticize those defenders of his freedoms – not just troops, but he’s not grateful for the cops, either;

Put a man in uniform, preferably a white man, give him a gun, and Americans will worship him. It is a particularly childish trait, of a childlike culture, that insists on anointing all active military members and police officers as “heroes.” The rhetorical sloppiness and intellectual shallowness of affixing such a reverent label to everyone in the military or law enforcement betrays a frightening cultural streak of nationalism, chauvinism, authoritarianism and totalitarianism, but it also makes honest and serious conversations necessary for the maintenance and enhancement of a fragile democracy nearly impossible.

It has become impossible to go a week without reading a story about police brutality, abuse of power and misuse of authority. Michael Brown’s murder represents the tip of a body pile, and in just the past month, several videos have emerged of police assaulting people, including pregnant women, for reasons justifiable only to the insane.

It is equally challenging for anyone reasonable, and not drowning in the syrup of patriotic sentimentality, to stop saluting, and look at the servicemen of the American military with criticism and skepticism.

Yeah, douchenugget, it’s not the uniform that makes folks worthy of respect and a measure of adulation, it’s what the uniform says about the person wearing it and their commitment to the ideals that they are defending. Anyone can buy a uniform and put it on – our Stolen Valor page is chocked full of people who do that. Those spazwads do it because the uniformed services are the last government institutions which accomplish that for which they were created.

I like how he added in the “preferably white man” in there, as if he’s not a white man. I’m pretty sure that Liberals don’t know they’re white.

Masciotra claims that there is a “sexual assault epidemic in the military”. He doesn’t mention that a woman on a college campus is more likely to be assaulted than a woman on a military base. Masciotra recently graduated from college, so I wonder how many women he raped.

He refers to that tired-ass survey that the stank-ass hippies all use for proof that 1/3 of women in the military are assaulted. The folks who did the poll sent out tens of thousands of inquiries to women who had been in the military, they got a few hundred back and 1/3 of those few hundred said they’d been raped – does that sound a bit unscientific to anyone? But it says what the David Milquetoasts of the world want to hear, so, the veracity of the poll doesn’t come into question.

Chelsea Manning, now serving time in prison as a whistle-blower, uncovered multiple incidents of fellow soldiers laughing as they murdered civilians. Keith Gentry, a former Navy man, wrote that when he and his division were bored they preferred passing the time with the “entertainment” of YouTube videos capturing air raids of Iraq and Afghanistan, often making jokes and mocking the victims of American violence.

O-o-o-h. Chilling. I’m pretty sure that there are just as many college and high school students who are doing the same thing when they should be studying. Facebook is full of those videos and not everyone watching them are in the military. I’ll bet Chelsea Manning did a bit of war-pron viewing himself.

Wars that are not heroic have no real heroes, except for the people who oppose those wars. Far from being the heroes of recent wars, American troops are among their victims. No rational person can blame the soldier, the Marine, the airman, or the Navy man for the stupid and destructive foreign policy of the U.S. government, but calling them “heroes,” and settling for nothing less, makes honest and critical conversations about American foreign policy less likely to happen. If all troops are heroes, it doesn’t make much sense to call their mission unnecessary and unjust. It also makes conversations about the sexual assault epidemic, or the killing of innocent civilians, impossible. If all troops are heroes, it doesn’t make any sense to acknowledge that some are rapists and sadists.

The same principle of clear-eyed scrutiny applies to law enforcement agencies. Police departments everywhere need extensive investigation of their training methods, qualifications for getting on the job, and psychological evaluation. None of that will happen as long as the culture calls cops heroes, regardless of their behavior.

Again, Dave, who is silencing your criticism? There you are, on Salon, criticizing the troops and the police and I suspect that no one is kicking down your front door to haul you off to one of our famous gulags where you’ll be tortured and punished for expressing your opinion.

What he’s really afraid of is being scrutinized for being the weak, intellectually dishonest creepy-looking milksop who can’t see anything worth a little inconvenience in his own life. Mr. Milquetoast wants everyone to get the impression that he’s a hero because he speaks his mind, but what is heroic about evacuating his bowels in the pages of Salon when he’s just toeing the stank-ass hippie/hipster dufus party line. Maybe in his crowd he’s brave, but to the rest of the country, he’s just another motormouth dingus with a rat stuck to his face. I’ll bet he wears a ball cap backwards, too. By the way, look who Dave does think is a hero.

In these dark days, this country needs heroes and they ain’t gonna turn to the David Milquetoasts.

Thanks to Ann for the link.

I am going to take a position that probably isn’t very popular. I will continue to protect the freedoms that Mr. Masciotra enjoys, including the privilege to lambast and insult those who provide those protections. I do not expect praise, nor do I wish for a simple thank-you. I will except Mr. Masciotra’s ungratefulness, as a sign that I , and the men I lead and serve with are doing their jobs well.

Rerun0369. You can do that and still tell him to go screw himself for his asinine views. That is what we all are doing, especially those now in service as well as the P/Os who will respond to his next 911 call.

OWB

Actually, Rerun0369, that is precisely what we are all doing. When we agree to defend the Constitution, we do not give up our right to have an opinion and to express it, especially when we retire from active service.

One reason so many of us aging warriors speak so loudly is because we held our tongues while still serving and understand that while serving it looks almost as if we give up those rights. Actually, we didn’t. We just sort of temporarily suspended some of them.

Those who denigrate the warrior class know that and attempt to take advantage of that reality. It comes as quite a shock to them to discover that we are silent no more.

Perhaps the sweetest response from idiots on the street is when confronted, many lefties actually are amazed to discover that the right of free expression applies to all of us, not just to them. Have several times had them argue the point – and got to educate them. Very satisfying.

We who can do so on behalf of those still serving who can’t.

Rerun0369

I am not telling any of you to silence yourselves, or to stop, those of us still actively serving appreciate it. Once I finally hang my uniform up for the last time, I have every intention on joining you crotchety old bastids. Until then, I shall serve silently and dust America’s enemies as needed.

To all you old, crotchety, vocal SOB’s, keep it up, we need it in this current day and age.

ByrdMan

No one in the military is asking for you to call them a hero. Just don’t degrade them because they chose to serve. After all, they’ve all chosen, for one reason or another, to do a job you can’t or won’t do. Save your vitriol for that Republican Senator you just voted into office.

Taylor

It’s ridiculous to think that someone will agree with your arguements if you use foul language, and can’t even take the time to write a meaningful article.

Yes, people are raped all over the world, but it is ludicrus to use that as an excuse for rape in the military. If it’s such a great thing, like this author proclaimed, then shouldn’t violent crimes like rape not happen? Hmm. Interesting.

My Pappaw gave his left leg and lungs for this country, and eventually his life, so I do honor the honest military personell but that doesn’t mean I won’t call you out if you’re full of it. Just because you put on a uniform doesn’t mean you’re a hero.

OWB

And your point would be what exactly? That you can’t bring yourself to honestly look at real statistics? That you are too intellectually lazy to seriously discuss the simple fact that sexual assault/abuse occurs at a much lower rate in the military than anywhere else, and when it does, it is dealt with with precision?

No one here has made ANY excuse for rape in the military or anywhere else. If you bothered to ask, you would find more than a few here have investigated, arrested, testified, and otherwise been involved in bringing rapists to justice.

But no, you can’t be bothered with reality. Enjoy your life in your bubble. The rest of us will continue DOING something about it as you and your ilk keep talking about it and wringing your precious hands.

robert saji

it sounds like you all are the ignorant ones imagine a country where all men had to serve oh wait this is most countries in the world so does that mean everyone in the world for everyone that has served the military is a hero I think not for some it may be an obligation but for most its for the benefits your the idiot

ArmyAtC

It’s obvious that reading comprehension is a problem for you, so I’ll spell it out in simple words you can understand. Veterans and service members (those are the men and women who are now serving in the armed forces) don’t call themselves heroes. Now take your ignorant ass somewhere and GFY. There, is that plain enough for you? Jackass.

Marine_7002

Uhhhhhh, please step away from the bottle or the bong (or both) long enough for the effects to wear off, then come back and write something coherent.

2/17 Air Cav

WTF are you struggling to say in that tortured mess? Jebeebus, man, try a smidgen of punctuation, at least, and maybe throw in an upper case letter now and then, saji, haji, or whatever.

ByrdMan

Green Thumb

Actaully, I agree with you to a point.

I know a lot of Soldiers that are fucking turds. They were turds while they were in, and they are turds while they are out.

However, the same applies to all other walks of life. University professors, politicians, students, law enforcement and so forth.

David

and especially Salon writers…

Maggie Henry

Right on!

Mustang1LT

Don’t like foul language, well listen fuckstick, why don’t you read the TAH FNG FAQ before you get your shit-stained panties in a bunch. And, in case you are acronymically challenged, FNG stands for Fucking New Guy (or Girl). This is OUR house, our rules. You don’t like them, you don’t have to post here. Go troll somewhere else and get some Preparation H for that massive case of butthurt that you have as a result of your side getting clobbered in last week’s elections. I am not going to try to have a reasoned debate with an idiot, it’s a waste of my time. Besides, I really don’t think you’re intelligent enough to present much of a challenge, don’t let the profanity fool you.

Farflung Wanderer

I was waiting for a chance to use this. To save space, I’ll merely post the link.

http://www.suddenlink.net/pages/jimhug/tommy.html

It’s a Kipling poem called “Tommy”, and it talks about assholes like our friend Masciotra. Thought it’d be appropriate, I stumbled across it yesterday.

Michael

So I’m thinking that’s exactly how the POTUS believes.

OWB

And while we are on the subject, it is the lefties continuing to tell lies, objectifying women, and all that which is continuing to make it difficult in too many cases to get victims to even report sexual assaults in or out of the military.

Lefties, look in the mirror. YOU are the ones lying about how assaults are really dealt with in the military which is perpetuating the myth. That would be the myth that YOU created in the first place.

Oh, yeah. Lefties create problems where they don’t previously exist, then lie about it until it finally becomes reality.

Airborne

I sent this pustule a facebook message telling him to get in touch with his supposed employer’s IT Department and let them know that they left him out of the directory, but did get the Shuttle Bus Driver listed. Guess what? He has removed St Francis from his bio. Surprise!

MGySgtRet.

Would love to debate this with that stank assed hippie, but he would need to provide some actual facts rather than just his fucktard rant.

As Jonn said, his “sexual assault” statistics that he is throwing around like they are actual facts have been disproven by anyone who looked at the numbers.

This pussies “feelings” do not concern me. The feelings of those like him never did while I was on active duty and matter to me even less today. I really want to feel sorry for this loser because he has obviously never cared about or served anything larger than himself so he would not understand those that volunteer to put themselves in harms way. But how can you feel sorry for someone who is obviously shortchanged in the testosterone department and then projects that shortcoming on those who are not. Fucking leaf eater.

In short, Fuck You Masciotra. You are everything that is wrong with this country.

Maggie Henry

I didn’t need to read past the first line of this diatribe t OK know it was a useless piece of garbage. When you start off calling names that is a sure sign you have nothing of importance to say!

Green Thumb

Yeah.

I bet James Lee Burke is pretty excited to see his picture at the bottom of David’s site.

And Jesse Jackson was probably thrilled David interviewed him. After all, its been what, 10 years since he was interviewed?

David is a clown. Fairly simple, Maggie.

I went to a very liberal school and had to deal with a few morons such as David. But the oddity of it all, most of the students actually support the troops. Not worship them, per se, but support them.

David takes an extreme stance to get attention. He is what I call “The Special Guy”.

UpNorth

I guess David had less to say, he deleted his Twitter account. Why did he do that, Maggie? Maybe he had nothing of importance to say?

Mike Spight

I left the hipster a note on his blog site…I hope he enjoys reading it as much as I did writing the note. He’s a pussy…100%.

ByrdMan

In the words of one Rod Stewart, “Wake up Maggie I think I got something to say to you.”

I know that resorting to being a grammar Nazi in these internet debates is normally considered faux pas, but why is it that both of the supporters I’ve seen for Masciotra’s article can’t spell? Google has a built in spell check…just so you know.

Onward to my point…and I’ll use the college education that my service in the United States Marine Corps has paid for.

Masciotra’s article clearly suffers from stereotypes and bias and it’s a shame that you don’t see that. He lumps service members together as victims, mindless killers, or rapists. There’s no middle ground, and the stereotypes are pretty far from the truth. Ask service members if they feel victimized. Ask them how many civilians they’ve killed or how many rapes they’ve been party to. I think you’ll see the numbers are far less than what Masciotra’s article would have you believe.
Masciotra’s opinions aren’t based on fact as much as they are his biases. He relies too heavily on the first piece of information he has, doesn’t offer or entertain any disconfirming data and gives preference to more recent events in order to bolster his arguments. For example, he references OEF and OIF as examples of the horrible truth of the military industrial complex but fails to acknowledge that since 1951 the U.S. military has been involved in more than 350 humanitarian missions of one kind or another. I understand that it’s an opinion piece, but it’s an opinion piece based on faulty data, and that’s the problem. (For me anyway)

But maybe he’s right. I’m sure that the Marine Corps brainwashing I underwent in boot camp still has me in its clutches and I should be looked at with as much “criticism and skepticism” as you and Masciotra can muster. I am, after all, just sitting around “making jokes and mocking victims of American violence”, clutching a flag in one hand and a bible in the other.

Jeff

What a sad little man. Sorry to say that lives here in Indiana.

Mustang1LT

Yeah, well, we Hoosiers have plenty of genuine heroes that have served in ALL of our nation’s wars going back to the Revolution. This douchebag doesn’t erase that.

Nicki

I love Dana Loesch’s Tweet about this douche canoe:

“Leather blazer, check. Edged manscaping, check. Emerging skullet, check. All the ingredients for an epic douchebag.”

That’s the perfect recipe right there!

“…Little do they know of our long labour for the safe-keeping of their borders. Yet, I grudge it not.”

Halbarad the Ranger
The Return of the King
JRR Tolkien

I would edit that to:

“…Little do they know care of our long labour for the safe-keeping of their borders. Yet, I grudge it not.”

Pinto Nag

David, just remember this: You need to keep your words tender — against the day you may have to eat them.

And if you happen to have the courage of your convictions…then just take that “911” out of your speed dial. You won’t be needing it, sugar.

Maj D Bag

The word “douchebag” seems to be very popular in this thread. The number of times it’s written is an easy to use benchmark by which one may gauge a lack of thoughtfulness and basic awareness.

The Cult of the Soldier is really what is being criticized in the Salon article. And that hero worship is a cornerstone of Fascism.

The US military does not protect our freedom. That is such comic book mentality. Protecting us is their sideline .They are the battering ram and hit men for American business interests and corporations.

The ‘Heroes protecting our freedom” jingoistic baloney is how they get you to accept the carnage and pay for it. It’s how they get recruits. and how they get you to hand over your children. If you’re going to send your precious children to die you should think a little more deeply as to why.

Instead you all carry on like the audience at a Jerry Springer show.

Napoleon said “I can get a man to die for me for a piece of ribbon” He knew the truth of the matter more than anyone here.

Were my thought and comments douchebaggy enough for you ?

Virtual Insanity

Yes. You can go now.

thoughts*. Douchebag.

Oh now, not necessarily-he had a thought and expressed it. It was a first for him and he’s proud like the first time a toddler makes a pottie by himself, don’t ruin that for him.

Redacted1775

Aww hell, you got me. I was overwhelmed by the sudden urge to use the term douchbag to describe a turd bucket who so rightfully earned it. All I read from that vapid, incoherent diatribe was the first and last line, dead giveaways the rest wasn’t worth my time. 😀

nbcguy54

Interesting. The US military does not protect our freedom, but basically goes overseas to beat up others and protect our business interests. I think that was gist of your post.
Question- do you lock your doors at night and when you leave your house? Probably so. Why? To keep the bad guys out so they don’t steal your stuff or harm you and your family.
Consider the military as that locked door, keeping out those bad guys. We keep the threats to our Country out of our Country the best that we can by taking the fight to them, instead of waiting for them to show up in our bedroom. And yes, we may be protecting business interests as a small part of the mission. We all know that if the economy takes a big hit it affects the security of the Country. Just like if someone stole your stuff out of your house-that’s a potential big economic hit for you that takes time to recover from.
So if you really feel strongly about what you posted, remove the locks from your house and car and see what happens.

Sporkmaster

To be fair that word has been popular word in the category of profanity in many social circles. In this case it seems to fit David quite nicely considering how he acted. But let me help you identify why this word is a perfect description of his actions.

To start of with the reason that members of the military could be one of the most diverse and inclusive family out there. So when you into argument about Veterans and the military ON Veterans Day, do not cry when you have some push back. You know the old saying about throwing stones from glass houses things.

You state that the United States military does not defend our freedom. That is fine to hold that position, freedom of speech and all. However I have to ask you what you think DOES protect our personal freedom and how it protects it? How are we able to maintain these freedoms while in certain sections of the world people do not have these freedoms?

This is the part where his and your douchesness comes out. You attempt to speak for all those who join on the reasons why they joined. Because the answers and reasons are just as diverse as the people who enlisted. Also while parent’s will always call them their children, once a person is over eighteen they are a adult. A adult that is able to make their own choices on to enlist or not to enlist. Something that the real child soldiers with the ages in the single digits.

You think that we do this for prizes or medals? These items are merely a representation of what we gave during our military service, deployments or missions. But this again goes into the different reasons why people join, something that you are do not understand or actively ignoring this for the sake of insult.

In short I would dare you to see if you can post anything of real intellectual merit. Up for a challenge?

Isn’t that a George Thorogood song?

🙂

CLAW131

1LT,Why Yes,Yes,it is. But I betcha the Scrote thinks he’s the personification of that other George Thorogood tune,”Bad to the Bone”!!!

John

It’s difficult to come up with a level headed response to this guy’s article. Yes, I agree there bad/corrupt soldiers and police. It’s no different than any other group though. As the author mentioned about not going a week without hearing about police brutality, the same goes for stories of some teacher getting busted for sleeping with students. Children getting abused at daycare. Priests molesting alter boys.

This author of this story is an ungrateful ass. Our military doesn’t protect our freedom? Our police aren’t there to protect and serve? What does this clown think would happen if we didn’t have them? I’m sure the author would be dialing 911 if he heard a burglar breaking into his house.

My brother-in-law had served 10 years in the army. He was either deployed, training or healing that entire 10 years until his battered body earned him a medical discharge. He waits 3-4 weeks to get in at the V.A., he can’t sleep more than a few hours at a time, he deals with the aftermath of his 10 year enlistment everyday. So I will be honoring him and our country’s veterans tomorrow. The author of that story should move to Canada and go eat a bag of dicks.

Dear Majorette: You say that “[t]he word ‘“douchebag”’ seems to be very popular in this thread.” What do you mean it seems to be? Is it or isn’t it? Make a call. Don’t be wishy washy. Me, I prefer shit pickle as a succinct descriptor for the Charles Manson lookalike in the oppressed worker’s replica shirt. And thanks for the advice to think more deeply about war, warring, and the reasons wars occur. You really are a presumptuous shit pickle, too. The people who have served–and who today–serve in the uniform of our nation’s armed services have allotted more time to pondering such things than it took you to read Das Capital 12 twelves. But, you see, it’s like this: You can’t get there from here. For you and yours, grasping why good people would sacrifice life and limb for an ideal that you dismiss as so much baloney is beyond your capability of understanding or appreciating. And that’s just fine.No hard feelings, shit pickle.

nbcguy54

I think douchbag fits this thread quite nicely. Afterall, we are talking about David Messengill aren’t we?

2/17 Air Cav

Majorette? Just another who is down for the snuggle. I am truly exercising some self restraint with this clown. I guess it thinks it accomplished something. I guess to it, everything is defined by class struggle. To it and its, you see, the evil owners of the means of production are behind all wars and the downtrodden proletariat, the pawns who fight those wars. Put aside that wars didn’t begin with the industrial revolution. Put aside that great writers, great thinkers, men of genius have worn this nation’s uniform in war and in peace. None of that matters. For those of us with a memory or the ability to google, it’s Donovan singing The Universal Soldier all over again. The world has had it all wrong from the beginning and, most especially, the USA. Majorette has the answers. It knows. Freakin’ pathetic. I’ve got to run now. I have to go drown some kittens and pull the wings from a ladybug in the name of freedom and democracy. You may quote me, shit pickle.

Stacy0311

He’s right.
We don’t protect his freedom.
We simply guarantee it.
The very existence of the US Military guarantees the freedom of all Americans.
Including David Masciorta’s freedom to be a complete and utter fucking moron who lacks the sack necessary to do anything with his life except complain about people who are better than him.
So don’t hate little Davey. Pity him. Or even better, be amazed that he has survived this long without a spine or balls

Green Thumb

But I bet David and his crew took Veteran’s Day off.

Any takers?
