Warrantless, unannounced searches on UK gun owners

| October 20, 2014

Fox News reports that the United Kingdom has new policy that went into effect on October 15th which allows unannounced inspections of gun owners’ property there;

Britain’s gun owners were subject to the home visits before the update, but the inspection had to be conducted with prior notice.

“Where it is judged necessary, based on specific intelligence in light of a particular threat, or risk of harm, the police may undertake an unannounced home visit to check the security of a certificate holder’s firearms and shotguns,” the updated policy says.

In a letter to legal gun owners, a British police organization, the Association of Chief Police Officers, said the revamped guideline does not grant police any new powers but clarifies “the basis on which the visits should be conducted.”

I’m sure there are tons of gun grabbers who just peed in their pants a little at the thought of this happening here. Of course, the UK has no real Bill of Rights, but here we do.

This is why we broke up with Britain back in 1776.

ByrdMan….That’s right, we dated for a while, promises were made, gifts were exchanged and then THEIR in-laws showed up and it was all over. So much for love I say. I guess it came down to, we loved freedom more than a King.

ByrdMan

The break up letter is still talked about 238 years later.

Sparks

ByrdMan…Yes, and may it EVER LIVE!

Of course we still have some twats here who think it would be just grand to have “royals” in our presence….as if being a buck toothed inbred should give anyone special dispensation to rule anyone, anywhere, at anytime….morons!

Luddite4Change

Historically this is nothing new for the UK/Britain and the practice of goes all the way back to the outlawing of metal arrowheads in commoner hands right after the Norman Conquest in 1066.

The Other Whitey

No warning, no warrant, yeah, this looks absolutely NOTHING like how the Gestapo, the KGB, the Stasi, or the Okrana operated…

The Other Whitey…Amen…Preach it brother Whitey!

“[T]he police may undertake an unannounced home visit….” Such innocuous, friendly language, isn’t it? I wonder if the police will visit bearing tea and crumpets. Were I writing the story, I would call the unannounced visits what they are: raids.

Sparks

2/17 Air Cav…But knowing the staunch, stiff upper lip, always proper to a fault Brits, I’m sure when the police show up for the search the first thing the lady of the house will say is, “Would you like some tea? I’ll go put the kettle on.”

David

Just watched a bit of “Sins of the Fathers” yesterday, in which the Home Secretary was saying something like “yes, we will pursue terrorist but with restraint and due regard for process” – right as they show the police/Army kicking in the doors to the Conlon house, and holding everyone (who were innocent) at SLR-point.

UpNorth

I don’t know, Sparks, the way that Britain is going, the lady of the house will be in a back room, covered with a Burkha. While the man of the house advises the police to take their shoes off and to be mindful of the call to prayer, coming from the local mosque.

UpNorth…When you’re right…you’re right!

The Other Whitey

Something tells me that the unarmed cops that they so love to talk about won’t be the ones conducting these “visits.”

Farflung Wanderer

Of course (I forget the name of the armed cops in England. It’s like Special Weapons Team or something like that).

If the Warrior Cop is bad here, it’s worse in England, especially since they don’t have the restraint that a SWAT guy would have to exercise due to the Constitutional system and all that.

Not to say that English cops are scum. It’s just more likely they could be used tyrannically without a constitution that clearly outlines rights (England really, really needs a written constitution at some point…).

A Proud Infidel®™

I’m sure that snot-nosed liberals like Mayor Nanny-Bloomers and his ilk wet their pants with delight at even the thought of inflicting that on US Citizens. I see modern day Britain as a criminal’s and terrorist’s dream come true with a populace of conveniently unarmed victims!

Richard

Our Constitution defines the rules for search and seizure but Congress and the Legislatures can write laws to modify those rules.

I plan to be on the lookout for bills submitted to Congress and State Legislatures that permit warrant-less searches for any reason. I will pay particular attention to any sort of bill purporting to improve safety or regulate firearms storage. And I will look in all of the bills for amendments and easily-overlooked sections because Congress does that all the time.

You should do what you think is best. You cannot read everything or follow every bill. So read one a week or one a month. If you see a news story about a bill that makes your nose twitch, figure out how to find the text and read it or post something and someone else will read it.

Vigilance is the price of liberty.

Richard…Bravo Zulu! Excellent advice since we legal gun owners are the only ones looking out for our own best interests.

Flagwaver

However, those with illegal or unregistered guns can be safe in the knowledge that they will never be subject to this kind of scrutiny.

Ex-PH2

Bingo! Flagwaver wins this round.

I have yet to understand what it is that makes these dimwits think that criminals like terrorists and gangbangers get their guns through legal means.

Didn’t they learn any lessons from all that crap with the IRA?

They actually are that stupid, you know.

HS Junior

Interestingly, Northern Ireland actually has significantly looser gun laws than the rest of the UK to allow for self-defense: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_politics_in_the_United_Kingdom#Northern_Ireland. Looks like they finally figured out that allowing law-abiding people to army themselves was a good counterbalance the the loonies in INLA, PIRA, UVF, et. al.

PavePusher

They’ll lose that as soon as someone can say, with a straight face, that the “Troubles” are over.

A Proud Infidel®™

Yep, when was the last time anyone saw criminals lining up to turn THEIR guns in as soon as a new law was passed?

Flagwaver

I saw someone turning in a spent LAW in LA, does that count?

A Proud Infidel®™…It’s not so funny but regarding your post. I remember the “cash for guns” programs. Thugs were lined up around the block for the cash offering in return…get this…BB Guns and water pistol look a-likes. That’s a no shit story too.

AW1 Tim

“A man with a rifle is a citizen. A man without one is a subject.” Henry Clay.

This is why we are citizens, and the British remain, in their own words, “subjects of the crown.”

Veritas Omnia Vincit

And that is why historically the peasants have been disarmed…it’s a lot harder for your betters to come in and rape the women and steal your shit when they can get killed in the process.

MustangCryppie

Just for the heck of it, I looked up gun laws in the UK. Found a link from a gun dealer over there which pretty much fits the bill.

http://www.gundealer.net/rules.htm

The page says that one must have a “good reason” to have a gun in the home. For example, “such as membership of a clay shooting club or pest control.” LOL! Pest control. That’s the reason why I have my weapons in the home.

You also have to have the guns in a safe bolted to the wall and, of course, the ammo stored separately.

Can’t have these blokes easily defending their homes, now can we lads and lassies?

Pinto Nag

The stories that I’ve read from the UK indicate it is a crime to engage in self defense. The people I read about were charged with assault because they attacked burglars that entered their homes. (At least one of those burglars was armed, also.)

PavePusher

Gosh who could have seen that coming….

That’s impossible.

The Laws of Quantum Physics specifically state it can’t possibly happen!

If it did, the universe would implode immediately.
