Dempsey: No direct action for US troops in Iraq

| July 4, 2014

The Washington Times reports that Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Martin E. Dempsey told reporters that American troops won’t be involved in direct action against those al Qaeda-linked insurgents in Iraq (whatever they’re calling themselves today) unless they detect a direct threat to the “homeland”;

“We may get to that point if our national interests drive us there, if ISIL becomes such a threat to the homeland that the president of the United States with our advice decides that we have to take direct action,” Gen. Dempsey said. “I’m just suggesting to you we’re not there yet.”

His remarks follow significant hand-wringing by administration critics who argue the Pentagon lacks a clear strategy around what has, during recent weeks, become a slowly mounting deployment of U.S. military assets back to Iraq — more than 2 years since U.S. forces withdrew after an eight-year occupation.

I guess that’s as close to the administration’s intent in Iraq as we’re going to get. But, surely, folks can understand why critics of the administration are wringing their hands – the White House has had six months since the fall of Fallujah to communicate a strategy to rescue Iraq, but we’ve heard nothing but promises of aircraft and weaponry – promises which haven’t come to fruition. Now, suddenly there are several hundred pairs of boots on the ground.

Meanwhile, Reuters was warned that thousands of “sleeper cells” are wandering the streets of Baghdad waiting for a signal to attack that city in support of a final surge on the capitol from the insurgents;

The officer told the news agency that there are roughly 1,500 sleeper cell members inside Baghdad and another 1,000 just outside the capital.

“We are ready. It can come any minute,” an alleged member of one such sleeper cell told Reuters. “We will have some surprises,” he added. The news agency said that any time a stranger approached during its interview with the man he would hide his face with a baseball cap and stop talking.

One member of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) contacted Reuters from Iraq’s second largest city, Mosul, and said that the terrorist army fully plans to take the capital.

“We will receive orders about Zero Hour,” ISIL member Abu Sa’da told the news service Thursday.

Now, I’m not sure if the administration would consider an attack on the Green Zone and the Americans working there an attack on “the homeland”, but I’m pretty sure that an attack there would probably drive the final nail in the coffin of this administration in regards to public opinion. Americans of all political stripes have lost confidence in this administration.

I’ve said it till I’m blue in the face. Evacuate all Americans from Iraq NOW and deal with or help them from a distance of security and a place where imminent loss of life is off the table. ISIS is planning and by this account proves my beliefs true, to take our Embassy. It is their golden trump card. They want a situation to make Tehran ’79 look like Disney World. They want video executions of non essentials for the world to see and hostages of importance to bargain with. Obama has no plan now, what do you think his plan would be to deal with a captured Embassy? I shudder to even think about it. This is not just foolish policies any longer. It is American lives immediately at risk and in harms way unnecessarily. Obama has a choice here, he will make the wrong one in keeping with his cowardice and lack of leadership abilities and disdain for the military and American lives. He will do as always, whatever he thinks will make him look good. If it costs every American life in Iraq and he thinks there is an upside in it anywhere for him, he will let them die. On this most special of days, God please protect our soldiers and citizens in Iraq, Somalia and Afghanistan. Protect them from the enemies they face on the field and the enemies behind them in the White House and I am very sad to add, the Department of Defense itself.

Sparks, take a deep breath and let it out. You’re about to pop a vein.

Let the fool do what he wants to. He spent 11 years in the Illinois legislature, unable to make up his mind about legislation, never introduced a bill, never did a damned things or made a point of any kind.

THIS is the result. So let him fail.

Ex-PH2…When you’re right…you’re right!

That is incorrect. He spent seven years in the Illinois legislature as a state senator (1997-2004). He introduced plenty of bills, and was involved in quite a bit of legislation. His three years as a US Senator (2005-2008), while short, also included some meaningful work, and he did introduce bills. See here: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_bills_sponsored_by_Barack_Obama_in_the_United_States_Senate I mean, I’m not the biggest fan of the guy either, but you could at least get the facts right.

Excuse me – WHO doesn’t have a clear strategy?

Last I heard we were sending Apaches there. That’s direct action equipment.

lol @ “direct action”

Quit trying to be operator, General Dempsey.

CAs6

But…but he was an S-1 as a company grade Armor officer! When his peers were out breaking track and doing gunnery, he was probably stuck in an office operating a typewriter. Surely that qualifies him to be an operator!

I believe this comes from the twitterpated part of news as a ‘tweet'(?)

Editor’s note: Fighters from the Islamic State have demolished shrines and mosques in northern Iraq, according to photos published by the group on social media, @AJELive reports. – Aaron

So if there is a ‘zero hour’, per the Reuters report, and the US troops over there are armed, are they going to be allowed to defend themselves and their post, or just sit and take it?

I know it’s the 4th of July, but I sometimes feel thisclose to calling Dempsey and asking him how far his head is up bodaprez’s ass. I expect some fr#$!@@#king common sense to be used, and to Hell with the PC bovine defecatory byproducts.

I don’t like any of this.

Eric

Funny, this was the same thing Senator Barry Obama was complaining about in regards to President Bush and his activities and actions.

So was Pelosi and Reid. It is a shame that there is so much cyclical activity that keeps occurring, it is no wonder DC never changes.

And trying to proclaim those 1000 troops are not in “direct action” is despicable to even imply, let alone say. They might have 100 Iraqis in front of each of them, but they aren’t that far ahead and these guys are shooting just as much, if not more. And probably hitting more than those IAF.

I don’t know how long these tweet links last, so I copied the text for this message from Reuters/Africa:

Suicide bomber targeting worshipers in mosque in remote village in northeast Nigeria kills 5, wounds dozens, security source says – @ReutersAfrica 7-6-2014

Anyone can see very quickly that it’s definitely all about religion, right?
