Santa Barbara’s gunman was a nut
I see LTC Robert Bateman is trolling the blog again this morning, reawakened by the latest news of that fellow in Santa Barbara who killed a half dozen people and injured a half dozen more. Bateman feels vindicated by every shooting incident, you know being an expert in violence. But, reading the Washington Post this morning, he shouldn’t feel even a tinge of vindication. The gunman, whatever his name was, has been treated for mental problems for years and should have been reported on the national database as a mental defective;

Last month, the 22-year-old wrote, his mother was so concerned about his well-being after seeing some of his videos on YouTube that she contacted mental-health officials, who dispatched sheriff’s deputies to check on him at his apartment in Isla Vista, an enclave near the University of California at Santa Barbara.
Had the officers sensed something awry during their April 30 visit, they might have searched Rodger’s home. They would have found his three semiautomatic handguns, dozens of rounds of ammunition and a draft of his 137-page memoir-manifesto. They would have read about his plot for a “Day of Retribution” — when, as Rodger wrote, he planned to “kill everyone in Isla Vista, to utterly destroy that wretched town.”
But, actually reporting the nut would have caused scores of lawyers and mental health professionals to spring to his defense. So Bateman and those lower functioning liberals go to their first instinct; ban the gun, you know, even though half of the fellow’s victims were stabbed to death.
And the folks in Washington are seizing on the incident to revive the gun control debate, but they’re not thinking about the causes of this – there is plenty of gun control already, there is enough gun control that if everyone had actually done their job, this gunman shouldn’t have had guns in the first place. But, aside from it being completely his fault, mental health and law enforcement failed measurably in their duty to society.
This was California, which has more gun control than many parts of the country, but it’s the cogs in the system that have to work together so that the gun laws work. It’s been the same in the mass shootings across the country. It’s not the gun laws that don’t work, it’s the humans in the system who are failing society.
But, it’s easier to regulate law abiding Americans than it is to regulate the criminals and sociopaths.
“He was able to make a very convincing story that there was no problem, that he wasn’t going to hurt himself or anyone else, and he just didn’t meet the criteria for any further intervention at that point,” Brown said. “Obviously, we certainly wish that we could turn the clock back and change some things, but at the time the deputies interacted with him, he was able to convince them that he was okay.”

The real shame is that no one there had the means to defend the means to defend themselves. This tragic event reminds me how crucial it is for me to exercise my concealed carry permit.

Meanwhile, millions upon millions of citizens did nothing to harm any other citizens this weekend. Whether they owned firearms, carried knives, had a tank parked in the back yard, or none of the above is irrelevant.
We have nuts walking among us. Every day. While they may have the right to do so, they do NOT have the right to harm others walking around among us. Wallowing in self-righteous indignation that some of those sane folks would dare to want to protect themselves from criminals, nuts, and whoever else might force harm upon them does nothing to keep them safe.
Nothing is sweeter to the eyes of a gun grabber than the shootings of random white people who are middle to upper class. Nothing. and when the shooter himself fits that profile, oh man, it’s so very good. But this guy–what’s his name–screwed everything up by using a knife to off a few of his victims. Hescrewed everything up doing that. If only he had shot them…right, Bateman?

Three were killed by gunmen at the Holocaust Museum in Belgium, where gun ownership is not considered a right and tightly controlled – as much as guns are controlled in the UK, which LTC Bateman worships. That happened on the same day as the shootings in California, but it’s slipped into the blackhole of the news cycle. I guess because it might prove that gun control doesn’t work to make everyone safe all of the time.

After all, he’s a perfidious one-trick pony, whose entire existence is validated by the outcry he creates against himself. He needs it, because his penis is obviously insufficient to keep a wife, and his balls are too small to be allowed in combat.

Not every tragedy is preventable. This guy had serious problems, but mental health issues are not always easy to detect and, even if detected, it is much harder to try and predict how a mentally ill person will act.
Neither the police nor the mental health professionals who were treating the shooter could find sufficient cause to confine this nut and frankly I think that’s appropriate. I’d rather not confine 100 or 1,000 or 10,000 “odd ducks” who would do no harm in the hopes of catching one truly violent lunatic. The world can be a violent and unpredictable place, prepare yourself for the possibility that you might have to deal with that and we’ll all be better off in the long run.

I just happened upon the 137 page letter this nut sent out before starting his crazy spree. He says right in it that when his Mom called the police on him over his YouTube videos that “if they had asked to see my room, it would have all been over”.
More failure by the ones suppose to be enforcing the laws and not in the laws themselves.
