Another Navy base shooting
Chief Tango sends a link from NBC News in regards to another shooting by a civilian at Norfolk’s Navy Station in Virginia. Details are sketchy at the moment, but it looks like the security personnel shot and killed a gun man who had killed a sailor;
The incident aboard the USS Mahan [an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer], which was docked at Pier 1 of the world’s largest naval base, also left the male suspect dead, according to the U.S. Navy.
The shooting happened at about 11:30 p.m. and the base was put on lockdown while security forces responded to the incident.
Authorities would not specify how the suspect was killed, how he got the weapon onto the ship, or what led to the shooting. Both suspect and victim were male.
The ship is still a crime scene.

Sorry for the loss of our man. Praying for the others. Glad they got the shooter.
This was a weapon retention issue. Petty Officer of the Watch drew her weapon and had it taken away from her. Lots of lessons here…
I grieve for the sailor who was killed, but I blame training and policy more than anything else. Why did the PO of the Watch allow the suspect to close with her? Last time I checked, if non-uniformed personnel in a secure area doesn’t follow orders, they are an enemy. Also, if you lose your gun, you lose your life.
Just before he got within melee distance, I would have given a warning shot… to the heart.
Guess you have never seen navy security, its a joke. Honestly surprised he didn’t kill more people.
That POOW is going to go through hell for the rest of his or her life with the what-ifs and I should haves.
The watches need to be better trained and have the determination and will to kill someone trying to board their ship.
Need to arm the pier watches too, if they don’t already. I seem to recall an ID check at the end of the pier. But that was many moons ago and at the far end where the CV’s are parked.
I’ve spent many a watch on the quarterdeck. We’re casting aspersions at the POOW without knowing the story. We’re assuming this guy ran at him/her and he was able to take him/her by surprise. For all we know, he simply walked calmly up the brow, on the guise that he was there for a real purpose and presented no threat until he was close enough to take action. He made it onto the pier, which most would assume he had a reason to be there. To see someone driving a rig up the street and park, then walk up your brow nice and calmly doesn’t present a threat to most people. He’s said to have behaved erratically, but what does that really mean?
@Edward1811 – I have seen nothing (including official reports) that indicated the POOW drew his/her weapon and had it taken away. Can you show me where that’s been established ?
Believe nothing the press tells you until the NCIS official investigation has completed and been adjudicated. And then only consider 75% of that to be accurate.
This is the latest news about this incident.

The civilian had authorization to be on the base and in the berthing area, but not on the ship.
There is still investigation going on. This is all I have right now.
Initial Navy Blue stated that the OOD challenged the man and the two started to struggle. POOW pulled her weapon and was then disarmed by the man. COG responded to the brow to assist and was shot, Topside rover and COG (UI) returned fire and killed the man.
