“They Didn’t Just Talk to Him, They Listened”

| February 9, 2014

Marine_7002 posted this link in the comments to Jonn’s “Weekend Open Thread.”  I thought it was worth a mention here.

I can’t add much.  The story speaks for itself – eloquently.  You might want a tissue handy when you read it.

RIP, EM2 Bud Cloud.  When our times come, may we all be so lucky.

Ya done good, USS Dewey.  Damn good.

I received that shipment kleenex supplies I ordered last week…Who needs a box? To the men and women of the USS Dewey…*salute*! Got to go, somebody called in a dust complaint.

Quite a story. Many of we Sailors joined the USN because of examples like shipmate Bud Cloud. We always loved meeting guys and gals like him and swapping sea stories. They’re an important of our heritage and it was always an honor to give them honors.

I was on the PACFLT staff during my last tour as a cryptologist. Before I got there (unfortunately) Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens came to Hawaii and he asked if the intel staff would like to have lunch with him. Stevens was a cryptologist on Joe Rochefort’s staff and he was involved heavily in the Yamamoto shootdown. From all that I heard, a great time was had by all.

I always wanted to meet Captain Joe Rochefort, the hero of Midway. All those Sailors who went before us inspired us so much.

BZ, USS Dewey! You did all of us proud!

I posted this story in my FB page a few months ago when I first saw it. The Captain and crew of the Dewey are top notch. Bravo Zulu, shipmates.

Fair winds and following seas, EM2 Cloud… we have the con.

Fair winds and following seas, Petty Officer Cloud. God bless you and BOTH Dewey crews for service then and now.

MustangCryppie: I’m an avid reader of all things Midway, comes from reading about USS Enterprise (CV-6). Personally, I’d have loved to have met Dick Best. I’ve read interviews of him, and he sounds like he was a true warrior.

Back in the mid-90s, I joined a email newslist called the Midway Roundtable. It was a wealth of information and first-hand stories about the battle. It’s morphed into a web site http://www.midway42.org/. I highly recommend that you take a look at it if you haven’t already, its fascinating reading.

I would bet that EM2 Cloud has been to Heaven’s Admiral’s mess to tell Admiral Dewey about his visit to “his” ship, and has told that story to every sailor he can find.

@8 Oh, yes! Dick Best. Talk about feeling sweet, sweet revenge. Coming upon those Japanese carriers with those bright yellow decks with the red balls on them just begging to be bombed. And just happening to be in a dive bomber ready to do it. He was probably one of the luckiest men in the war.

Thanks for the tip. I’ll have to check it out. As a cryptologist, I’m very interested in the battle and the cryppie play in it.
