Gary Lakis; phony Marine contractor
Scotty sends us a link to his work on Gary Lakis, who built himself a great story that a lot of people, including the US government swallowed hook, line and sinker. ABC News did an article on Lakis fooling folks back in 2004;
But for all his talk, some of his own employees soon became suspicious that Lakis was a phony.
“He was my boss,” said Sweeney. “We had all pretty much heard about his qualifications and I was fairly embarrassed by his performance.”
ABC News has learned there is no record of combat during Lakis’ 10 years of active and reserve duty: no special operations, no Silver Stars, no Bronze Stars, and no Purple Hearts.
A group of Marine veterans questioned the huge number of decorations Lakis wore to a Marine veterans reunion where he even posed for pictures with the then-Marine commandant, Gen. James Jones.
“All he was, was nothing but a dirty liar and a phony. That’s all he turned out to be,” said Dick Sasser, a former Marine veteran who was a member of the Marines’ elite special operations unit called Force Reconaissance.
According to the ABC News report, Lakis got a $66 million contract for his security work for the US Government. From The Enterprise Report;
Pentagon criminal investigators, the FBI and the U.S. Attorney were all involved in the investigation into Lakis and how SSI obtained such a lucrative deal with such little oversight, but for unknown reasons, Lakis was never charged with a crime. When word of the scheme began to circulate around the special forces community in San Diego, California – where SSI was based – Lakis vanished, and later resurfaced in Australia.
Since then, Lakis has reinvented himself as a gun-for-hire, and T-E-R has confirmed his assignments have taken him to Iraq, Afghanistan and other war torn hotspots.
Rumor Control says that he faked his own death last week in 2010, but regardless, we can’t get his records because of the federal investigation. But, you know, Stolen Valor is a victimless crime.
Category: Phony soldiers
I’m guessing he of course claimed he was Force Recon, but of course…
HE WAS NEVER CHARGED!!! WTF. $66 million and they are trying to cut veteran and retiree benefits. Did they at least get the money back? Damn I need to come up with a bag of shit stories and get me one of those lucrative contracts. What the heck was he protecting for $66 million bucks! The lack of oversight and foresight in the government never fails to amaze me.
Sparks, they have no such contracts for honest folks apparently.
/snark
Folding stock AK? Shaved head and goatee? Real deal for sure.
It looks like an AMD-65 not an AK.
WTF did he do with 66 Mil?
He should be made to pay that money to the other guys he was with who’s lives he put in harm’s way. Being with a private, you understand the private’s capabilities. Being with a guy who claims all kinds of heroics, you think he’ll pull his weight and when he doesn’t, someone else gets killed.
Scumbag.
@5 Gunz….
” 132 chicks at the same time, man.”

/apologies to the ladies here if you’re offended….first thing I thought of, since he’s a lying scumbag.
The USA DOES have an Extradition Treaty with Australia, doesn’t it? Wotta sniveling, slimy POS, i hope he comes here and “Wickres”, I’d love to further unload on him!
“Stolen Valor is victimless” until the Feds get ripped of and they charge you with a crime.
So; he was never charged by the gummint, but when the real deal snake eaters catch wind of his fakery, he hits the road and leaves the country?? Maybe we need to have a team of spec ops types working on these things, because it appears that when the fakes are confronted by the real thing, they run away. It would make things more lively for Phil; eh?
How about Semper Li Guy. Always full of Shite.
But that Goatee does scare me, I hope he does not come looking for me. I would not want him to use his vast killing skills on me.
There is a reason those who steal valor often also get in trouble for other fraudulent conduct – LIARS LIE. It is definitional. People who lie about their “military career” lie about other stuff too.
As for this guy, if he is actually a “gun for hire,” he will eventually lie to the wrong person and get himself killed. I just hope he doesn’t get any good guys killed along with him.
Well fuck, if they won’t go after APL and that fake-ass “SEAL” Monkress who has gotten several times more than that in contracts, why would they go after this turd?
Because fuck them, that’s why.
Hey, NHSparky, just because NotJulie has not been posting here lately, it doesn’t mean things are not progressing on that APL crap.
I would truly like to know why no one actually investigates these people before these big-ass contracts are awarded. I could use $66 million myself, you know.
If all it takes is a fake beard and a shaved head, and carrying around a stupid-looking gun, I’ll start tomorrow.
Ex-PH2 – the key to most government contracting is paperwork. Mounds and mounds of paperwork. The government seems to think that if you are willing to do all that paperwork, and sign under penalty of perjury, that is enough. They are idiots. Who lover paperwork. Did I mention there is a lot of paperwork involved with this crap.
Susan – 🙂
I’m waiting for one of these guys to say, “Yeah, well, I wore those medals and patches because if I had been in the [Insert Branch of Service Here], I would have earned them.”
#2 – that money was probably paid to guard Benghazi…
Maybe Don Shipley’s hair can take on this guy’s goatee. This Saturday on Pay Per View: “Two sets of follicles enter; Only one leaves.”
He looks like a knock off Bill Goldberg. He is suckering people in Australia for cash too?
@20 – The Hair would win, you can take that to the bank!
Rumor Control says that he’s changed his name to Gary Thomas and he’s traveling on a UK passport.
I hope Interpol has his number.
Can we get him more internet attention?
How about this: Gary Lakis a/k/a Gary Thomas (fake name) Gary Lakis a/k/a Gary Thomas (fake name) Gary Lakis a/k/a Gary Thomas (fake name) Gary Lakis a/k/a Gary Thomas (fake name) Gary Lakis a/k/a Gary Thomas (fake name) Gary Lakis a/k/a Gary Thomas (fake name)
I hope that helps. He can probably grow the hair back, too. We should take that into consideration.
I imagine that he was a former intern in Phildo’s All Point Logistics management training program.
I met the guy in Afghanistan 2/3 years ago and he is still living the lie.
He cannot help himself
I served with him the Army Guard (B Troop 1/18 Cav) in the late 90s. He was in OCS for a short period. He did claim to be Force Recon, Scout Sniper, Silver Star, Purple Heart (supposedly received for Philippine operations). Then he just disappeared.
