Marine was a good guy with a gun; saves lives, gives his own
CavRick sends us a link to the story of 39-year-old former Marine, Todd North, who was working as a bouncer at a bar in Havelock, NC, when, Jonathan Richard Pugh, an 18-year-old, who had been bounced from the bar for fighting and for being underaged, returned with a gun and began blasting away at the crowd. From The Sun Journal;
“[Pugh] apparently calmed down [after the confrontation with bouncers] and left the parking lot in a car, but shortly afterward came back, walked to the door and started firing,” [District Attorney Scott Thomas] said. “North fired back, attempting to keep Pugh from entering the bar, but was shot three or four times. His body will undergo an autopsy on Monday.”
Pugh got in his car and drove away.
Havelock Police responded about 1:13 a.m. Sunday to the call of shots fired at Flyers bar and secured the scene as Havelock EMS Paramedics arrived and began to treat the wounded.
North was hit three or four times, but got off a shot with a .45 caliber round into Pugh’s torso. Police recovered five shell casings at the scene that matched Pugh’s gun. Two other people were wounded directly by bullets, three by bullet fragments, so its pretty obvious to me that North protected the bar crowd with his own body and his gun. A Marine to the end.
Of course, this doesn’t count as a good guy with a gun making a difference in a mass shooting, because Mother Jones only counts shootings with four or more deaths.

Godspeed Mr. North. The world was a better place with you in it, and is diminished with your departure.
I wouldn’t give Mother Jones the credence of even printing the title of that rag.
It’s only fair to point out that without North’s intervention, more people might have been injured, perhaps mortally. He deserves mention well above an obsequious and purple-veined hippie rag.
Dear Mr. Pough,
Say a prayer to whatever God finds you interesting and ask that he sees fit to send you somewhere the Corps can’t find you.
That’s quite a graphic with the Sun Journal story. I wonder what they use for ax murders.
Semper Fi, Marine…
What thebronze said.
May the Gods bless him, and may their angels of mercy bring solace to his friends and family.
May those same Gods bring a long and painful demise to that individual whom I shall not name.
The shooter is 18 and a junior in high school? I’d love to see his academic and disciplinary records. I bet he was a budding saint and intellectual giant. So, he’s out drinking, though underage, and leaves after a fight. It’s after midnight Saturday (“early Sunday”) when he returns and starts shooting. The Marine is hit but does not retreat. Instead, before succumbing to his wounds, he returns fire and places a round in the shooter’s gut, stopping the shooter before he can do more harm. I hope those who were in the club take the time to show their thanks publicly for this Marine. It’s the least they can do.
Semper Fi to the end; Godspeed brother.

I think the Tennessee entry is mis-reported. Shelby County is equivalent to Memphis and its suburbs, either the first or second most populous county in the state, and I would imagine has a quite small horse-to-human ratio. Shelbyville, where I live, is in Bedford County. It is the home of the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration, and the county has numerous horse farms, making it a much more likely candidate for the highest horse-to-human ratio.
