USS Miami Arsonist Gets 17+ Years

| March 16, 2013

Regular TAH readers likely remember NHSparky’s previous articles on the USS Miami arson incident.  In that incident, a shipyard worker – Casey James Fury – intentionally set a fire on board the sub.  He later told authorities he set the fire because “he wanted to go home because he was suffering from an anxiety attack” and “never envisioned such extensive damage”.  The resulting fire did what is currently estimated at $450 million in damage to the sub – and injured seven.

Fury was sentenced yesterday in Federal court to 205 months in prison – just over 17 years.  He was also ordered to pay $400 million in restitution.

Yeah, right.  Good luck on getting $400 million from this doofus, Uncle Sam.

Oh well.  At least Fury will do something approaching a reasonable amount of time for his crime.  And at least no one was killed during the fire.

But I guess Fury now has bona fide reasons for his anxiety attacks.  I understand prison can be kinda scary.

I’m wondering what good a $400 Million restitution order is unless the guy is an heir of Warren Buffet?
Someone on here can give an answer to the legal reasoning behind this I’m sure because if someone told me I was fined $400 Million for something I’d just laugh at them but if they told me $20,000 I’d take notice as that is something I could be forced to sell my house and come up with

If I owe you $4,000 dollars, I have a problem.

If I owe you $400 million, you have a problem.

@1- and I bet that the feds have already earmarked that $400 million income for something else, and will just scratch their heads in confusion when the deficit goes up $400 million more than they had planned.

Taxpayers (the 53%) get the honor of funding this idiot’s stay in the big house – outstanding. Yes, write off the $400M – that ain’t ever happening (even part time NH resident & insensitive rich guy Mitt Romney doesn’t have that kind of coin). The total cost of the fire could well exceed a billion bucks when all the forced extended deployments & deferred maintenance get tabulated.

@3. Yep. They probably treated it as a credit and spent it already. I wonder if the next contract with the Metal Trades Council (of which this genius was a member) will stipulate that the union will cover damages caused by their members. Not holding my breath, thanks.

this is why i am for forced labor for all prisoners. They have a debt to pay and they shouldnt get better treatment or services than Seniors on SS or Veterans. When we have fight tooth and nail for every benifit we are owed or entitled- these idiots screw up and recive better care. am like WTF?!

Just an Old Dog

Being a former shipyard worker I’m not in the least surprised. I worked at General Dynamics (NASSCO) for 7 years. For the most part the workers, even the skilled tradesmen, are treated like chattel ( how be it semi-decently paid chattel). A good number have checkered pasts (criminal records, bad military discharges or both, About 80% speak English as an Additional Language. When hired for training less then 10% last more than 2 years and attain Journeyman level.
And those are the GOOD workers. They also hire subcontracting companies to provide unskilled labor to install insulation, general cleanup for paint and fire watch for welders. These companies hire directly from half houses for prisons and welfare work programs. These are the dregs of society, felons, addicts and welfare leeches forced to work for once. The work is dirty and backbreaking. These people are capable of anything.

C2/2000AF

That seems to be a problem with contracting period. They never seem to care who they take as long as they can work. Working at a company in the middle east where they hired guys who were arsonist, psychopaths, deadbeat dads, history of assault and some even got dishonorable discharges or general discharges ranging from assault to weed. Stuff like this wont even raise the awareness of people with mental issues or red flags in their work history. Another moron will come and do the same thing.

Sadly things like this will have an effect next time they play BRAC close/don’t close games. PNSY barely hung on and with shitvlike this it’s going to be an incredibly difficult sell to keep this place open past the next round of closures.

@1

If the arsonist ever tries to sell his story to get rich, the ‘victim,’ in this case the government, will get dibs on the proceeds.

Dude is headed to the Federal “pound him in the ass” lockup for almost 17 years…. and he’ll sit there and do absolutely nothing while there. He (and the majority of the prison population in the USA) should be on some sort of general work detail (along the lines of Sheriff Arapio in AZ) – chain gang stuff, printing license plates, etc…

This clown will be in the hole bitching about how he can’t watch OWN or some other crap on Cable, and have his lawyer file suit claiming that his rights are being violated – and he damaged a sub to the tunes of over $400M?

A Proud Infidel

@#7, J.O.D., I hear you on that, I used to work at a smaller shipyard where the Prison Work Release van was a regular sight at the beginning and end of the day shift. The proprietor of the place preferred to hire recently released felons because of the tax break it gave him, and drugs were a regular sight there. (Many of those guys did enough to qualify for honorary Mexican and Colombian citizenship, know what I mean?) When I got my start date for the job I still have today, I just went in the next day and “dragged up” with a huge sense of relief and a smile on my face!! $400 mil? Yeah, right, that boy’s gonna spend a LOT of time screaming “WEEEE, WEEEEE,….” in the shower!!

@12

Hondo, looks as if JK Rowling’s wealth is a smidgen above $100M…somewhere like £560M or $910M as of Apr 2012. Author CJ Fury does have a certain ring to it. 🙂

CI Roller Dude

After I retired, I went to work for yet another govt organization. I have to meet with many civilians from not only our Republic of CA, but some who work for the Fed govt. I think about half of them are mentally unstable and I wonder how any work gets done. Funny, but for me to get hired as a copper, I had to actually pass a mental screening. After 32 years of copper work, I can usually tell you what’s wrong with a person. It scares the shit out of me.
