Standoff continues in Herkimer, NY

| March 14, 2013

According to local news, Herkimer law enforcement continues to engage with 64-year-old Kurt Myers on Main Street. Here’s some video of the action yesterday as Myers, who is barricaded in a building kept police away;

Earlier in the night, a police robot was sent into the building, and later on tactical units could be seen entering and exiting the building. Police helicopters also were used throughout the day.

Repeated attempts to reach Myers on a cell phone went unanswered, police said.

It must be frustrating to have all of that electronic equipment, body armor, high-powered weapons, armored vehicles, the toughest gun laws in the country and still be subservient to the whims of a single 64-year-old with a shotgun.

I can appreciate that they want to take him alive, but, ya know, ya reach a point where he’s made a decision how it’s going to end.

According to police, Myers’ only arrest was for a drunk driving charge in 1973. Neighbors describe him as “an odd little man”, according to the Albany Times Union;

Traci Randall said the only time she remembers speaking to her next-door neighbor was when he yelled at her son because he thought he had shot an air pellet at his Jeep.

“He would walk by himself. He was kind of a loner. No wife,” she said.

Neighbors said he never had visitors or friends. Gary Urich said Myers wouldn’t even say much as ‘Hi’ to him when walking by his porch.

Now this might not be the perfect time or place to discuss such a thing, but this guy is a perfect example of WHY disarming the population is NOT going to work. Even if 99 percent of gun owners are compliant, it’s that 1 percent who fight back and cause scenes like this over the entire country that will be burned into our memories.

SHOULD he have had a weapon? Clearly not if he uses it to murder four people. Would the laws we currently have on the books have prevented him from having a weapon? Probably not, even less likely due to what others have rightly pointed out regarding HIPPA restrictions, etc. Would new laws have prevented him from gaining a weapon? Again, unlikely.

But don’t tell our politicians that.

As I said … we would learn more from the neighbors and town folk vise the GOV.

Why does this guy still have a heart beat?

Deadly force was authorized yesterday!

Yeah, there they were, laws on the books and in English. I bet a Spanish version was available if he needed it. Perhaps he didn’t read the laws. Maybe he is illiterate.

This points up one thing to the gun grabbers and another thing to us. For them it means that the only effective answer is gun registration and, ultimately, confiscation. To us it means that an armed citizen could have stopped this SOB and that laws or social pressure kept that citizen unarmed. We call him a victim today.

As for herkimer, he’s probably digging a tunnel. The funniest line in the story came from a store owner who said he’s not going near his store for fear of being shot (“clipped” as he put it)–by a police sniper!

That should have been Meyers, not herkimer. Sorry.

So what if he’s a little odd? And if he didn’t talk to his neighbors? There are weeks, even months, when I don’t say word one, much less “hi”, to any of my neighbors. That’s even presuming I see any of them (odd and different work schedules and weekend interests).
This is the media painting Myers as needing medical and psychiatric help sans owning a gun by a “nut” who eventually snapped, thus paving the way for all of us gun owners (sane or otherwise) to be eventually disarmed via the Russian mental hospital diagnosis.

Oops! #5 is me, I’m posting from a different computer this AM. Was paying more attention to the comment, then the heading.

He’s also probably a crazed veteran who caught the PTSDs in wherever and got trained in the deadly art of the semiauto military shotgun.

NHSparky

Probably not, but he’ll have been to an airshow where the Golden Knights did an appearance, so that’ll be close enough to “crazed vet” for the MSM…

rb325th

He’s dead. Took a police dog out before the cops got him. He was using a Joe Biden Home Defense weapon apparently, maybe they will call to ban those now as well??

Airborne

Where’s the MRAPs?

If he was a Veteran, that would have been out on day one: “Veteran Kills Four.” Then we would have had the talking heads and their guests discussing how his military training factored into his decision to kill and his ability to evade capture by Barney and Sheriff Taylor. And, of course, we would have had pics of an M16A1 or M60 MG just to spice things up. Still, he may have walked past a recriuting station once.

I’m just waiting for the TV shrink to make a public diagnosis on a dead man he’s never talked to.

Speculation is always better than reality.

CAs6

Sorry, my sarcasm tag got swallowed up. I’m glad I didn’t hear even speculation of his
veteran status from any if the news I read on this.

@14. No, no, we got it. My comment wasn’t a rebuttal. I was building on yours.
