Taking business elsewhere
In Ilion, New York, Remington Arms is contemplating leaving the state and take it’s thousands of jobs and tax revenues with it. Yesterday, the Washington Post reported that Beretta may do the same thing in Maryland. They figure why should they make a product that their own workers can’t own;
Concern that the company will leave, and take its 300 jobs with it, is palpable among state lawmakers who worry it could be collateral damage from Gov. Martin O’Malley’s proposed gun-control bill.
Among other restrictions, O’Malley’s bill would ban assault rifles, magazines with more than 10 bullets and any new guns with two or more “military-like” features. Gun experts said it’s a near-certainty that Beretta’s semiautomatic version of the ARX-160, now only a prototype, would be banned under O’Malley’s bill.
“I’m concerned. I think they’re going to move,” said Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr. (D-Calvert). “They sell guns across the world and in every state in the union — to places a lot more friendly to the company than this state.”
Berretta has done it before when they moved a warehouse to Virginia after a particularly onerous bill. In total, 44 gun companies have announced their intentions to forbid sales to State Law Enforcement entities in states which restrict gun ownership by their citizens. Maryland legislators still don’t get it, though;
Del. Joseph F. Vallario Jr. (D-Prince George’s), whose district encompasses the Accokeek plant, said he would do everything he could for the company.
“We want to keep those jobs,” said Vallario, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, which has a key role in approving the legislation.
Well, if you want to keep those jobs, don’t screw Marylanders, dipshit.
Thanks to Hondo for reminding about the story.

Logistic operations were moved to Fredericksburg, VA. Think it only makes sense to move manufacturing to VA as well. Bet it’d make for interesting conversation on the O’Malley/McDonnell radio show. 🙂
“Well, if you want to keep those jobs, don’t screw Marylanders, dipshit.”
What?
You were expecting common sense from politicians?
Oh, dear me, no. That’s an oxymoron.
I want an ARX-100. I hope Beretta moves if they pass it.
I’m in VA, but wrote all the MD state legislators saying I’d never spend a dime in their state again if they pass anything.
Some poor Republican rep from western MD wrote back and basically said, “I support the 2nd but we’re probably fucked so keep your money in VA.”
Ex-PH2: that was in MD. Jim
MoronMoran represents a district in NoVA near DC. And I don’t believe his nickname is “Oxy”, either. (smile)We in Texas will welcome with open arms (no pun intended) any and all weapons manufacturers fleeing the terror of Yankeeland. Our state government is ready to offer favorable blandishments to induce a move.
Y’all come on down. We’ll treat you right.
What bums me the hell out is that Smith & Wesson bought out Thompson Center Arms here where I live a few years back. Then they proceeded to close down the factory AND foundry here and move the whole operation to MA.
Believe me, I’d love for Smith & Wesson or another major manufacturer to come north. We’ve already got the Sig Sauer Academy nearby, I’d love for a few more folks to come up here.
Simple test to determine the level of common sense attached to the legislation: If it requires a special exemption so that manufacturers and their employees need not fear prosecution for possession of illegal weapons as they produce and transport them out of state for sale – it’s a bad idea!
Can’t you must picture a raid on the factory and hauling off everyone involved with the manufacture of weapons? And arresting every driver of every truck as it leaves the factory??
Of course, that is exactly what some folks want to happen.
One of the biggest lies going is that Feinstein is looking to ban anything witha detachable magazine and one or more
scary features. If you look at her list, basically it bans
anything with a detachable magazine.
Me, I am looking for some enterprising manufacturer to design a lever action .223 which accepts AR magazines.
David,
There’s bolt actions that take AR mags and some that take M14 magazines.
I would say we would welcome them in Alaska, but they will never move there because of shipping costs. When it comes to gun rights, we are the Norther version of Texas. Man I can’t wait to move back there.
Hey, any and all Gun Manufactures can come to WV!! We will get rid of the Obama butt sniffer Manchin as soon as we can!!
When people have no jobs because the company moved and properous areas turn into a Detriot Clone- And Crime goes through the roof and those a@# hATS lose a family member or child to the crime ridden problems they manufactured.
Their cries will be of : If i only had a gun…
@8. David, reading her list of “scary-looking” attachments, it seems that my Mauser would be banned, too. It has one of those scary-looking hand guards on the barrel. And, my Remington 742 will be banned, as it takes a detachable magazine.
This from a article by the gun-banner in the Orange County Register, “Folding stocks make weapons more portable and concealable, while threaded barrels allow the attachment of grenade launchers, flash suppressors and other devices that reduce noise and recoil“. Oh yeah, the old canard about grenade launchers and flash suppressors. And, I hope she explains how a “threaded barrel” reduces recoil. This bitch is ignorant beyond words. http://www.ocregister.com/articles/weapons-496977-assault-bill.html
We’re about to not only lose Magpul but two of their suppliers that do injection molding. Alfred Manufacturing has already put a hold on their planned $1 million expansion and has said that they will also leave and take their 150 jobs with them.
This is why I love living in Texas. I fully expect to see many of these companies relocate to the Lonestar state where the locals are gun friendly (except for the transplants from the Socialist Republic of Lo Cali)and the politicians are willing to make the moves worthwhile.
And comes the announcement that FN will be building the next batch of M4A1s for the military. FN, who’s US factory is in South Carolina. Losing out on the bidding was Remington from New York, and Colt in Connecticut. I’m sure it’s just coincidence that SC is a right-to-work state, and that taxes are much higher in both New York and Connecticut. Taxes and labor costs really aren’t significant costs of manufacturing, are they?
