Former Mayor of “Chocolate City” indicted

| January 18, 2013

ROS sends a link from BBC to a “couldn’t happen to a better guy” story about Ray Nagin, the guy who, as mayor of New Orleans, watched his city collapse from his hotel room in Baton Rouge. Well, it seems he’s facing 21 charges for wire fraud, bribery, filing false tax returns and money laundering;

The charges come amid an investigation that has already seen two businessmen and two former city officials plead guilty.

[…]

His indictment in the case has been long expected.

Mr Nagin, 56, is accused of using his office for personal gain and of accepting bribes and other illicit gratuities while the city of New Orleans reeled in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

According to the federal indictment, Mr Nagin accepted more than $160,000 (£100,000) in bribes for his family business.

All I can say is “good”. But it’s been my experience that these clowns never get what they deserve, so we’ll see.

“Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy”…pretty much says it all right there.

Now watch him get elected Mayor For Life of some other shit-ridden ‘burg.

As I’ve said many times in the past to many a different individual….Karma, she is indeed a harsh mistress….try not to bend too much in shower Nagin, you piece of sh1t.

Just an Old Dog

I worked some guys from the gulf region who had lived around Nawlins. They said that city government was the prime example of how an overwhelming mass of the useless could elect officials who would bully and bilk the productive sections of the city into providing social assistance ( read “free shit”) for the “less fortunate”. That said elected officials would be less than honest in dealing with public funds and their positions is no surprise.
Another thing I heard from the same people was that a big reason Katrina affected certain parts of the city worse than others was the way the Levees were constructed and maintained.
Apparently The city council had given the contract to a company that certain members had ties to (read they got kickbacks). The company was known for cutting corners and piss poor work so parts of the city ended up “doing their own thing” and hiring a competent company.
When George Bush created Katrina the other parts of the city did well,,, the rest of them were the ones you saw in the news, sitting own their roofs or in the stadium waiting for Government help.

I’m sure there are many wonderful quotes from this guy that would be especially fun to revisit if he is convicted.

Cacti35

I think I just got a Karma stiffie reading this story! How many times did we see this p.o.s. blaming George Bush and FEMA for his stupidity and incompetency? Hell it looks like he was spending all of the “Bush bucks” on his self!

Hondo

Maybe he and Kwame Kilpatrick can get adjoining cells.

Reaperman

Oh good, there was talk that this wouldn’t happen. The Navy moved me to NOLA just after Katrina, and I swear that politicians down here couldn’t possibly be more crooked. I never would have believed that such a place existed in America before then. Granted I did end up staying here…

SJ

Did Rep Cold Cash Jefferson (Dim-LA) ever do time? I forget

Yat Yas 1833

Guys, having worked for mniciple government for well over ywenty (20) years I can tell you, it happens verywhere! I’m not making any specific accusations but I’ve seen/heard enough to know things aren’t what they seem. We can only hope this POS gets what he deserves.

PintoNag

Oh, gee. This is me trying to look surprised.

Reaperman

@8 yeah, Representative Freezer-Bucks got 13 years.

Hondo

SJ: yep. Got 13 years in the Federal pen. Started serving it at the Federal pen at Beaumont, TX, last May.

ObamaGirl will be on here soon….betcha anything

USMCE8Ret

Yeah, I think we saw that coming. I think Kathleen Blanco should be next.

Joe Mama

Oh man, you just made my weekend.

2/17 Air Cav

@13. Please. She ought to be restricted to one thread–per year.

Swampfox

I am waiting for the interview of Nagin blaming President Bush for this……..

USMCE8Ret

Whatever ya’ll do, don’t say the name that #13 said 2 more times, or she will appear.

2/17 Air Cav

@8, 11, and 12.

“Honey, what’s for dinner?”

“Hold on.I’ll check…….Um, we have some frozen lasagna, a couple of pizzas, fish sticks, green beans, and $90,000 in cash.”

CC Senor

@12 Damn! There’s another one from NO that came to Texas and ended up staying. As for Nagin, I couldn’t believe he got elected again after his performance during Katrina. At least the rest of the state managed to get rid of Governor what’s her name.

GruntSgt

Stick a spoon in that chocalate it’s done!

Ex-PH2

@5 – Cacti35 — Karma stiffie — Oh, man, you just made my day!

streetsweeper

Glad Nagan finally got hit with an indictment. Real glad! But, it will prolly slide right off of him like a Hershey chocolate bar in the warm Louisiana sun.

Hondo

streetsweeper: I’m sure that’s what Rep. Jefferson thought, too – and he’s doing 13 years in the Federal pen.

Turns out Jefferson also ran for mayor of NO a couple of times, getting into a runoff one time before losing. Must be something in the water down there.

The cajun word best suited to the “free stuff” is lagniappe or something a little extra. Ol Ray he don’ nevah mind axing ya fo’ summa dat lagniappe…..

Hondo

streetsweeper: here’s hoping he ends up in prison and learns that it really is better to give than receive . . . .

USMCE8Ret

I don’t know what’s sadder…

That it took this long to indict him, or that BBC picked the story up before the MSM. I haven’t heard a peep of this story outside the blog posting.

Hondo

USMCE8Ret: USA Today, Reuters, Washington Post, CNN, and LA Times all have stories up according to a Google search (among others). Didn’t see one listed on FoxNews, though.

streetsweeper

Both, E8Ret! Both! lol. MSM wouldn’t say a damn thing about their boy, Mista Ray Nagan. I ran oilfield back there for quite some time. Like a well trusted friend who hangs out here told me: “always be careful down there, you amongst ol timey democrats” and I learned. Hehehe….speaking of cajun’s, where dat RVN at? You out at camp chasing critters or fishing the bayou?

USMCE8Ret

@28 – Wrote too early. Just got home from work without much local/world news and checked after I posted.

streetsweeper

The Picayune Times would be the better source on anything Nagan. I reckon. http://www.nola.com/
