Racist literature in New Jersey

| September 24, 2008

USAToday reports that some white racists distributed hate literatire in one neighborhood in New jersey this week;

Roxbury Mayor Tim Smith said the fliers were dropped off at about 25 to 50 of the township’s 8,000 homes. He said nothing like it had happened before in the community of 26,000 residents.

“I’m sickened by this,” Smith said. “It’s not at all representative of our community. I want the world at large to know we’re not that kind of community — this is a place where people take care of each other and nobody cares where you’re from or what you look like.”

The flier shows unflattering photos of Obama, including a doctored one making him look like Osama Bin Laden, above text that reads: “Black Ruled Nations most unstable and violent in the world.”

Wait. 50 fliers? And it makes national news? Yeah, shocking. So I went to the website of this “League of American Patriots” (you can “Google” it, I don’t link to those freaks) and they tout their membership at “nearly” 20 people. Yeah, they said “nearly”. How nearly we can only guess.

In the USAToday article the Southern Poverty Law Center is quoted as an expert on the organization, yet a search of their website turns up not one reference to the organization. Even their map of New Jersey which counts 34 racist actions in New Jersey doesn’t mention the organization and the only background on the League of American Patriots that the SPLC offers USAToday is taken directly from their website. Some intelligence organization.

A blog about the group (which I also won’t link to) claims it’s sole mission is to attract Kevin Alfred Strom back into “the movement”. Turns out that Kevin Alfred Strom is a former racist currently rotting in prison for possessing child pornography. Boy that’s a real feather in your cap if you can entice a child pornographer into your group, ain’t it?

In fact their website had 41 visitors on when I was there – that’s roughly double their membership and it was probably all journalists. The USAToday also said that phone calls and emails weren’t returned. So ya know, I wonder if this is even a real racist organization. We all remember the countless incidents of false racist attacks, the Black professor who hung a noose from her own doorknob, the Adam Kokesh incident on GWU where he passed out anti-Muslim literature claiming to be a product of the conservative student organization. Apparently Kokesh even distributed his literature further and wider than this group in New Jersey, too.

I’m not shocked that USAToday and AP would run with a story before they have all of their facts (depending on an SPLC intern reading off of the internet over the phone as corraboration), but this certainly isn’t worthy of national attention that an organization of “nearly” 20 people distributed less than 50 leaflets in some obscure New Jersey community. Are there racists in the US…certainly. Is that why Obama will lose the election in November…hardly.
