A chance encounter with history
I just thought this was a cool story to share. Nucsnipe sends;
There I was riding home from work on the bike with my VFW riders colors on, traffic was slowing down, when I got passed by a jeep. Glanced at the license plate, CMOH state commemorative plate. Suddenly the jeep stops and as I come alongside the driver rolls down his window and says ” I want to give you something”. So he hands it over as we are still rolling along and says “Thanks for your service”. My mind at this time only working about half speed replies “Same to you”. He drives on and I put what he gave me in my vest pocket. So I stop at the VFW post on the way home and pull it out to look at it and my jaw hits the sidewalk.

Good Guy Medal of Honor Winner. Challenges with the most unchallengeable coin and doesn’t make you buy him a beer.
I saw one challenge coin while I was in the service and it involved SOUTHCOM’s Commander giving me it.

This is the guy, who when asked about how it felt to be receiving all that public acclaim, responded that folks were constantly wanting him to tell the story of the worst day of his life, for he lost two friends whom he couldn’t save.
I have a challenge coin from the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Henry Hugh Shelton, and I have a challenge coin from the United States Army Birthday celebration at the Pentagon in 2003.
Many years a go, as a PFC in Germany, I attended church services with Colonel Bernard Francis Fisher, who was awarded the Medal of Honor in Viet Nam.
Years later, when I was attending medical training seminars and didn’t have money for a hotel room, he’d let me camp out on his farm.
He was always very humble and oh, SOOOO anxious to help anybody and everybody.
I’ve been told he’s still alive, but is completely helpless and suffers dementia, or some such thing.
I emailed SFC Petry a few days ago to thank him for being the great guy that he is and he just wrote back;
Wow that was just a few days ago. I’m glad to hear that it made him happy. I owe it to those who stood before me as I was born into a free and safer country because of them. Also thank you for your service and the blog that keeps vets informed and active.
