Why Am I Not Surprised?
Remember when we were supporting the Libyan opposition to Qadaffi behind the scenes? You know, during that “Arab Spring” that was supposed to bring democracy to the Arab world?
Well, it turns out that we were apparently unwittingly supporting some other folks too.
Like jihadists.
According to the NYT, a fair amount of the weaponry the US funneled to the Libyan opposition through Qatar ended up in the hands of jihadist groups. You know, those same folks who run around forcing women to wear burqas/chadoors, chanting “death to America”, and want to impose Shaira worldwide.
No evidence has turned up linking any of these arms to the attack on the US consulate in Benghazi.
Yet.
As I’ve asked before: tell me again why we’re supporting these “Arab Spring” uprisings?
Category: Foreign Policy
Maybe this was another version of Fast and Furious?
Were those weapons used in the Benghazi?
I have no idea. Sheer dimwittedness? Mordant stupidity?
Our foreign policy is not at all clear. It would seem that the sitting president, to whom Congress defers in foreign policy matters when armed conflict occurs or is loomimg, rather enjoys rebellion and abhors the status quo. He couches his support in terms of democracy and self determination, but I don’t for a second buy any of it. He is becoming increasingly stuck as those whose favor he sought to curry essentially disregard him. We now have to hope that other nations, including Russia, are interested in returning stability to a region in tumult. We, slone, under the present regime are without teeth or credibility.
The most you can hope for coming out of this administration is a “strong objection” and “unacceptable”. Rhetoric, nothing else.
As Gomer Pyle would say: “Surprise, surprise, surpise!”
This just popped up on my internet front page:

When are we going to just pull the frak out? When? Pick your answer:
A – Never
B – When hell freezes over
C – When oil wells in the Middle East run dry
D – All of the above
(walks away muttering and kicking doors in passageway)
This is the reason they were covering up Benghazi from the start. They know that some of the weapons used in that attack were the ones we supplied and it wouldn’t look good, right before the election, if that got out.
Old Trooper: entirely possible, and IMO plausible. Not yet documented, though.
“No evidence has turned up linking any of these arms to the attack on the US consulate in Benghazi”. That probably explains why it took the Feebs 3 weeks to show up at the Consulate. Gotta give Achmed and his homeys all the time they need to cleanse the site, before the “investigation” starts.
Fast and Furious was a test program to supply weapons to other nations… And they call me a tinfoil hat man for having suggested that a year ago.
So you’re telling me that we provided weapons that were later used against us?! When has this happened before? Every time we’ve been attacked in my lifetime comes to mind. At least we didn’t train them too… (This time)
Gee, I neeeever would have suspected those in Arab country uprisings would turn to islamist fundamentalism.
Why, they always wanted democracy, human rights, and equality for all especially women, right?
Wink wink
AirCav–disagree with your first sentence, at least partially.
It’s painfully clear what our foreign policy is as far as our allies are concerned–screw ’em.
‘Unwittingly?’ Not so sure. We have a policy of arming our future enemies, and this time they didn’t wait the 10-20 years for us to go after them, they waited a little over a year and went after us. Apparently someone learned from history.
@15 – my thoughts too.
Obama is either totally ignorant about foreign policy and incompetent so he goes around the world screwing things up, or LIKES the radical Islamists taking over everywhere. I’m not sure which is true yet.
Gaddafi was no longer a threat to the US and Mubarak was our ally and was fairly reliable in protecting Israel’s border yet the US supported taking them down. Now things are an even bigger mess and much more dangerous and Jordan is next in line, also secular, also an ally.
@16 It’s actually more of a tradition than a policy.
Easy Screening Test: If someone can’t fire a round without uttering “Allahu akbar!”, we shouldn’t be arming them.
Can’t understand how anyone could be surprised at this. I seem to remember that the LSM reported pretty early in the EU campaign to get rid of Qaddafi that al-Qaeda was involved. But…Obama went ahead anyway.
