Bondi Beach shooting
As has been mentioned in the comments, some number of asswipes in Australia decided to open fire on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach near Sydney and killed 12. One was captured, name of Naveed Akram, a Pakistani-born immigrant living in Bonnyrigg, pictured above.
One was subdued by a possibly (from his name) Muslim bystander Ahmed el Ahmed, a big boy who grabbed one of the shooters mid-shooting and subdued him. We talk about folks here who distinguish themselves in combat as having big brass ones: I submit that jumping an active shooter when you are unarmed and wrestling his rifle away from him meets any criteria you care to name.
Early reports are somewhat confused, saying Mr. Ahmed was shot twice. The attached video does not seem to support that. Reports of the number of shooters are also mixed – it appears there were definitely two shooters, but some bystanders report three. If I had to guess it appears they were using some of those banned assault rifles (at a guess surplus L1A1s?)
Terrified locals reported hearing “up to 50” gunshots in the Archer Park area at around 6.45pm local time, where up to 1000 people had gathered for an event to celebrate the first day of the Jewish holiday.
Glad the casualty count was so low and the shooters seem to have been neutralized.

From watching the drone video it looks to
me like the last shooter shot down on that bridge was armed with a bolt action hunting rifle. I watched him cycle the bolt in one of the videos. Remember, the Texas tower shooter alone hit several dozen victims with a scoped hunting bolt gun.
I was aboard my ship when the Texas tower met his demise. Autopsy found a large tumor impinging on his brain IF I remember correctly.

He had several other weapons, including an M1 Carbine, but the Remington 700 was probably the one he used the most.
The pick up team of on and off duty officers and one civilian retired Air Force tail gunner that sent him to hell was also armed with bolt action rifles and revolvers. The shot that killed him was probably from his own shotgun, picked up by one of the officers.
The bigger pick up team, which consisted of frat boys, local hunters and other Austin residents that ran to the sound of the guns, likely kept the casualty count much lower than it would have been. With suppressive fire on the tower Whitman’s field of fire was limited.
There is a plan afoot to renovate the tower but it is believed that they are going to leave the bullet scarring in place as a reminder and memorial to those who died.

Dad was properly licensed and owned a total of six firearms.
They were armed with straight pull bolt action rifles and lever action shotguns. A straight pull is a little bit faster than other actions like a Mauser action since you don’t have to turn the bolt to cycle a round. The way they were shooting though, mostly unshouldering the weapons, cycling the rounds and then reshouldering the weapon indicates they were not likely well trained.
The last time I only owned six firearms was about 45 years ago.

The disarmed shooter appears to be armed with a semiautomatic competition shotgun of some sort, with a full-length magazine tube and 24″ or so barrel; it doesn’t look like what we call a tactical or riot gun with 18″ or 20″ barrel (but it’s possible), nor does it appear to be a standard hunting gun with 26″ or 28″ barrel.
It’s easy to critique from the comfort of my computer chair, but neither the shooter nor the hero who disarmed him seem altogether too concerned with a permanent solution. I’m sure I’m not the only one surprised that the shooter wasn’t incapacitated with his own weapon as he casually walked away. Then again, maybe the shotgun was empty, or perhaps the hero wasn’t entirely confident in his ability to operate it without endangering others. In a situation like that, it’s also possible that police were on or near the scene and he didn’t want to be mistaken for a shooter himself. Regardless, good on him for his quick thinking and selflessness.
As rgr769 already stated, the other shooter appeared to be armed with a scoped hunting rifle, which I’m sure will be reported as a “military grade sniper rifle”.
Reports are up to 16 killed now. Not a good day for the families, and my heart goes out to them. It’s also not a good day for the myth that Australia (and other countries) are disarmed and fully protected against what the media considers an American phenomenon: the mass shooting. I highly doubt the casualty toll would be so high had the attack happened on Galveston Beach, TX or even in Miami.
Once again, proof that gun laws only apply to law abiding citizens.

Once a person is determined to commit murder, obeying gun control laws becomes an irrelevant consideration. Criminals don’t follow laws that preclude or impair their crimes.
As I have seen on other sites. If the bystander had taken out the shooter more permanently, he would probably be lookin at life in prison, with the current Australian government.
From what I hear, there is no such thing as concealed carry there. So he had no option but to go in empty handed.
I’ assuming he was either unfamiliar with the shotgun or it was empty when he got it from the way he was trying to manipulate it in the video. Pity he didn’t butt stroke the asswipe with it.
Unless you are police or retired police or work in armed security you won’t get a permit.
