AF Vet arrested for terror plot

| November 20, 2012

Tman sends a link to an Associated Press article about an Air Force veteran who was arrested along with some folks he recruited to his terror cell after he went to Afghanistan for some terrorist training;

A federal complaint unsealed Monday says 34-year-old Sohiel Omar Kabir of Pomona introduced two of the other men to the radical Islamist doctrine of Anwar al-Awlaki, a deceased al-Qaida leader. Kabir served in the Air Force from 2000 to 2001.

The other two — 23-year-old Ralph Deleon of Ontario and 21-year-old Miguel Alejandro Santana Vidriales of Upland — converted to Islam in 2010 and began engaging with Kabir and others online in discussions about jihad, including posting radical content to Facebook and expressing extremist views in comments.

They later recruited 21-year-old Arifeen David Gojali of Riverside.

Authorities allege that in Skype calls from Afghanistan, Kabir told the trio he would arrange their meetings with terrorists. Kabir added the would-be jihadists could sleep in mosques or the homes of fellow jihadists once they arrived in Afghanistan.

From the rest of the article, it looks like another FBI sting operation caught them. I wonder how long before our luck runs out. According to the LA Times, Kabir was arrested in Afghanistan.

One of the men, Sohiel Omar Kabir, 34, allegedly traveled in July to Afghanistan, where he arranged for terrorist training to be conducted with Al Qaeda and Taliban operatives, according to a complaint unsealed Monday in U.S. District Court in Riverside.

Kabir, who lived in Pomona, is a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Afghanistan, federal authorities said.

But, there is no terrorist threat according to some.

Riverside, Upland, Pomona.

Like I needed any more reason to stay the hell out of “The 909.”

Mr Chips

Amazingly one of the local TV news stations, while reporting this story, is using the terms “islamic” and “terrorism” in the same sentence.

Flagwaver

Even more amazing… On my local news station, they didn’t even mention that the prime-douche was an AF vet AND they used Islamic and Terrorist in the same sentence.

Twist

I know it is going to come as no surprise, but MSNBC made sure they made the vet connection in their first sentence.

@3. It’s okay now for them to use such terms openly. The election is over.

Eggs

I wonder why the AF enlistment was so short for Kabir.

UpNorth

I wonder what the immigration status of Ralph Deleon, Miguel Alejandro Santana Vidriales and Arifeen David Gojali is? And, if they aren’t native-born, if any or all of them have overstayed their visas.

2-17 Air Cav

@7. There you go again, asking reasonable questions. Get with the program, man! Cover your ears, close your eyes, and sing loudly. That’s what I understand are the instructions to LEOs all over the country nowadays when it comes to suspected illegals.

B Woodman

I heard this on the radio yesterday — without names or nationalities mentioned. Geee. . I wonder why? Lying, hypocritical, leftist biased LSDM (Lame Stream Dinosaur Media). May you ALL rot in the lowest level of Hell.

Twist

@7, I believe one is a legal resident that was born in Mexico and another one of them is a legal resident that was born in the Philippines.

UpNorth

OK, thanks Twist. I hadn’t had a chance to check any of the stories on this.

Well, may I say on behalf of everyone who has ever visited here and those of us on semi-permanent resident status here who have served honorably in the United States Air Force, WE DID NOT TRAIN HIM TO DO THIS! Not that any of you would think that we did, but I simply must make that abundantly clear. All you other services seem to have your share of the less than honorable – guess we in USAF have been saving up for this one?

What a dispicable character. Lunatic idiot. And, yes, I seriously would request being among those at the head of the line to mete out to this terrorist that which he has earned. And his friends.

I’m surprised MSNBC didn’t claim they were up to “man-made disasters”. What strikes me is that this latest report is similar to Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab (Underwear Bomber), Adis Medunjanin and Najibullah Zazi (failed NYC Subway bombings) and Faisal Shahzad (failed NYC Times Square). There’s probably more, but like other posts on TAH, it’s just a matter of time that one of these clowns will slip through. I hope that day never comes.

DaveO

OWB,

I believe you. Most terrorists say “Allahu Akbar!” Soldiers say “Hooah!” Marines say “Ooo-rah!” Airmen say “Not the face!”

malclave

I might be able to do better than a news station using “Islamic” and “Terrorist” in the same sentence.

Now, maybe I was hallucinating, but I could have sworn that the channel 5 (KTLA) morning news show actually used the phrase “violent jihad” in relation to this story.

2-17 Air Cav

@15. Knee slap!

Nik

If they’re convicted, hang them. Publically.

Fuck all that “inhumane” shit. Hang. Them. Televise it. Broadcast it. Make this shit known.

It’s intolerable that something happens. It’s even more intolerable if we treat them with kid gloves.

I’d absolutely support anyone of certain professions that gets caught doing this kinda shit getting automatic treason charges added. Cops, sherrifs (and deputies), border guard, military…these are the people we entrust our lives and safety, and include all “former” in that. The penalty for violating that trust should be as severe as we can reasonably make it.

PFDRbrendan

@ #18
Nik we won’t ever see that again in our country because people get all overly sensitive about feelings and what they consider obscene. I too would like to see traitors strung up from the highest tree but, it just won’t happen and especially not in my home state the California. The sad thing is that as you drive down the boulevards in Ontario, Pomona, Chino and other towns in the 909, you will see faces of those who served (and in many cases died) hanging from banners attached to light poles. They are the only ones hanging high for all to see and I find it better that way.

OWB

@ #15: Actually, the AF yell is, “Room Service!”

PowerPoint Ranger

His length of service suggests he got das boot for something. I’m sure Jonn will be able to get the rest of the story soon.
