Someone sent us this picture and since it’s a slow news day and since I don’t feel like writing a post every five minutes about L’affaire Petraeus, shirtless FBI agents and the media chasing the Lebanese twins around hoping they’ll take their shirts off, here, this picture came from this forum;
Now, I don’t know a Marine uniform from a Navy uniform, but I do know that, with the Saudi Defense and Kuwaiti Liberation Medals, there should be a star or three on that SWAT medal. I’m pretty sure that the Navy Sea Service Deployment Ribbon doesn’t rank higher than a Bronze Star Medal. But you guys go ahead. And, oh, if you know where he is, we’d like to know, too. The only thing visible on that crooked-ass name plate is “Anton”

OK, Sparky, so what’s wrong with Guam? Those overbuilt hotels? The yuppied-up restaurants? Living at the DaysInn? Is Jeff’s Pirate Cove no longer cool? Spill.

Now I grant you, PH2, I’m going off nearly 15-year old memories here, but Jeff’s was kind of a dive then…typical Guam bar, being open air and being near the main gate (I was on Site III) it was always fun to sit and watch the cars slip and slide on the coral-based roads right after the 4:00 PM rainshower.
Nah, The Jungle down towards the airport was much better, if still an open-air dive, but at least it had a band sometimes. Then there were the strip clubs, and if you really felt like mixing it up with the Japanese tourists there were a few places in Tumon (which I hear now has a version of the Horse And Cow bar there.)
No, it was the no barracks for single people, rolling blackouts, typhoons, brown tree snakes, locals that hated white people, phone calls that ran $2/minute, rock fever (20 years ago it was $1500 r/t to the West Coast), etc., yeah, I was glad to leave after my tender tour of 2 years, 17 days, 4 hours, and 24 minutes.
Not that I was counting or anything.
Thank you, Sparky. Going on what you said, it looks like Guam has changed a bit. Jeff’s got a good food review in the local turista guide to Guam and the yuppiefied hotels are now occupying all the good beaches except for Gun Beach, which is a national park. There seems to be a boatload of changes since the airport was expanded for tourism.

The MRAP in the second picture looks like it had a bad day. Wonder where that picture was taken. It doesn’t LOOK shopped, but I can’t be certain.
