Canadian officer convicted of espionage
The Associated Press reports that Canadian courts heard intelligence officer Sub-Lt. Jeffrey Paul Delisle’s guilty plea today for selling secrets to the Russians and earning a tidy $3000/month salary;
[H]e voluntarily entered the Russian embassy in Ottawa in 2007 and offered to sell information to them.

He came to the authorities’ attention when he was returning from a trip to Brazil to meet a Russian handler in the fall of 2011, [Federal prosecutor Lyne] Decarie said. He was carrying several thousand dollars after staying the country only four days, raising the suspicions of Canada Border Services agents who shared their concerns with the police and military.
[Defense lawyer Mike] Taylor said at no time did his client put any Canadian troops in danger.
“There was no information that indicated where troops were or ships were,” he said.
The AP says that he faces life in prison under the Canadians’ Security of Information Act which passed just after 9-11-01. Delisle claims that he tried to forfeit his deal with the Russians, but they made threats towards his family. Funny how you can’t trust anyone these days. Even the Russians.
In related news, the Russian foreign minister is complaining that they can’t get along with NATO;
Sergey Lavrov said Wednesday that Moscow is continuing to seek guarantees that the planned shield wouldn’t pose a threat to Russia’s nuclear forces. He said the failure to negotiate a settlement was rooted in Washington’s refusal to accept any limitations on the missile shield.
So much for trust.

ESPECIALLY the Russians. Anyone who thinks they became all sweetness and light after 1991, I got a bridge to sell ya.

TRAITOR!
“Russian foreign minister is complaining that they can’t get along with NATO” — can’t imagine why.
Vlad, it’s tough not being on of the three big fish in the pond any more, isn’t it?
Mitt called Russia number one enemy and got pummeled by the MSM as out of touch.
@4
Yah, but they would have said he’s out of touch no matter what he said.
26 March 2012 Nuclear Security Summit (Seoul, S. Korea)
Obama whispers to Medvedev: “On all these issues, but particularly missile defense, this, this can be solved but it’s important for him [Vladamir Putin]to give me space. This is my last election. After my election I have more flexibility.”
Medvedev responds: “I understand. I will transmit this information to Vladimir.”
No wonder Ivan went broke. They’re paying for what they could get for free.
Not to denigrate Canada, they’re a nice country & people; but what do they have in the way of government & military secrets that Russkie would want to buy??
@7 NORAD for one. We also share info quite a bit with them.
From the news I’ve been seeing here (in Halifax, where he was caught), he was mostly stealing five-eyes stuff. That said, the Russians also want to take most of the Arctic for themselves, so stealing info pertaining to the RCN and Arctic sovereignty would make some sense. But yeah, shared info is what they seemed to be after.
@7. Except the French Canadians. They really do suck.
Oh, give the frogs a break AirCav. They think anyone who doesn’t speak French is a witless wombat.
WTF? A SUB-Lt? What useless POS can possibly be a SUB-Lt?
Traitors should be shot, life in prison? Screw him.
Trusting the Russians? Not me!
Putin’s a deadman, Medvedev dead, this could be the greatest day of our lives…
Once a commie b4stard, always a commie b4stard.
COB6: Sub-Lieutenant is the Canadian Navy’s English-language name for their equivalent of the US Naval rank Lieutenant(Junior Grade) – O2. It’s also the literal translation for their French-language term for an Army/Air Force Second Lieutenant (Sous-lieutenant) – O1. The Canadian Navy calls that rank “Acting Sub-Lieutenant” in English.
Bottom line is the POS was an O1 or O2. Either they don’t make O3 very quickly in the Canadian armed forces, or he wasn’t exactly a “world beater”.
