Enter The Violence Tax

| October 10, 2012

This story intrigues me in so many ways that it’s worth a post just to see how YOU feel about it?

Illinois county considers ‘violence tax’ on guns and ammo

The crux:

Officials in Illinois’ Cook County are eyeing a so-called “violence tax” on guns and ammo — a move aimed at curbing violence and closing the budget gap, but one that’s drawing a rebuke from the gun lobby.

I reckon the actual  perpetrators of gun violence won’t be paying much.

Of course it is yet another way to soak the law abiding citizen, but I think it rises to the level of Silly as a concept.

What say you?

I am shocked – SHOCKED!

Uh – shocked that there are any businesses that sell guns or ammo in Cook County, that is.

Assuming this bill passes, I predict that real estate agents will have some new sources of income as whatever gun/ammo stores that currently exist in Cook county relocate across County lines (which of course may be exactly what the activists pushing this bill want.)

They say in a democracy you get the government you deserve. I’d say the citizens of Cook County are getting it, all right.

Ex-PH2

And, to support what Martinjmpr said, the mere idea that this will reduce crime or even pay for the people who are victims of gun violence is ludicrous. The worst offenders are criminals who may or may not have ever had an encounter with the cops, and I’m quite sure that none of them buy their ammo any place where they have to pay a tax for it, even if this law is passed.
The point to the legislation is that each person who gets shot costs the taxpayers $50,000 in medical care — that’s assuming that all of these people have no insurance, which is completely not true. On the surface it seems okay, but the reality is that it won’t solve a thing.

malclave

Why not tax actual violence instead? Then maybe the feds can use that against the criminals. Isn’t that how they got Capone?

Hack Stone

Tax the killings, not the guns. First killing, you have to pay $200. But if you do a mass shooting, you can save a few backs. Three killings for $500. And if you get your Frequent Felon Card punched twelve times, the thirteenth killing is free.

Redacted1775

Why not? Let’s levy taxes on everything. Violence, vulgarity, (ala the futuristic pussified world of Demolition Man), fast food, health food, backyard BBQ’s, soda, obesity, ugliness, poor personal hygeine, shit that annoys everyone, running, walking, sitting, laying down, sleeping, waking up, being an asshole, BREATHING, fornication, smoking, not smoking, intoxication, driving while intoxicated, driving while sober and good ole’ homicidal mania. But that last one would fall under violence, right? The whole concept of this post alone hurts my brain.

UtahVet

When I was at Fort Hood, the city of Killeen was dry. The city of Copperas Cove appreciated this fact with all of the beer sales it brought them. Now I live in Utah where gambling is illegal. This is why the city of Wendover exists in Nevada. You can’t buy bottle rockets here either, which is why everyone goes to Evanston, Wyoming to buy them there. Prostitution is illegal in Utah, which is why the city of Wells, Nevada exists. I imagine this will have the same effect in Illinois county. Real estate agents just outside county lines will see a sudden influx of new business.

Army Sergeant

I say, Fuck Illinois County.

Nik

From a perverse, citizen-hating standpoint, this makes sense.

Tax the law abiding to pay for cops to stand against the law breakers. And hey, don’t want to pay the tax? That’s ok. The Liberals don’t want you to have a gun anyway.

NHSparky

At the risk of offending mentally handicapped people, this shit’s just full-blown retarded.

Hondo

What do I think of this, Zero? I think your first category for the story says it for me.

Yat Yas 1833

You guys and dolls know how much I like to flap my gums and right now I’m speechless!?!

malclave

@4
It is flawed analogy in several ways

True, but if it wasn’t, the Cook County politicians wouldn’t even consider it.

OWB

Ah, but by passing such a stupid law the idiots who pass it get to feel all good about themselves and how they are doing sooooo much to curb crime in their county. Does the plan need to make any sense? Of course not because if they consider anything which might actually work, then what is the need of their fabulous brains and all the new ideas they can concoct to solve problems which invariably they have themselves created?

Rik

Insipid! Where ya at?

Another “told ya so” for you.

Hondo

Maybe insipid decided to prove Social Security really was insurance by canceling his “policy” and refusing to pay his “premiums”. (smile)

Shamus62

I hope the folks that live there vote with their feet.

The Lost Dutchman

“a move aimed at curbing violence and closing the budget gap”

Knowing blue-state budgets, probably more the latter than the former.

Ex-PH2

Look, it’s an election year. Some of the more moronic politicians in Cook County in the state of Illinois have to justify their existence by coming up with idiotic laws like this, because then they can justify their own existence.

In a straw poll, 74% of the respondents said it was stupid and a waste of time, 26% asked how much the tax would be and would criminals have to pay it, too? Seriously. Some of these people need to have their seats permanently vacated, and no one gets re-elected to them. That would save a bodacious lot of money.

Yat Yas 1833

If they tried this in Maricopa county, there would be a revolt. I would start going to Apache
Junction in Pinal county or Tucson in Pima county to buy my ammo. Then while in A.J. or Tucson, I’d stop by for lunch at two of my favorite restaurants. The “Mining Camp” or “El Charro” respectively. Finally, before leaving town I’d fill my 22 gal gas tank! So not only would Maricopa county lose out on the sales tax for bullets, a meal and gas BUT they’d lose out on the “violence tax”!

Ex-PH2

Isn’t it a pity that no one ever says to any of the politicians who propose these things: “Do you have any idea how idiotic you sound?”

Dumber than socks on a doorknob. Dumber than a crank on a cucumber. Dumber than a cat chewing live wires.

Just an Old Dog

That’s like passing a fat tax on spoons. It’s funny that many people that think that making new laws on guns will quell violence smoke marijane.

Just Plain Jason

The stupid is painful…or at least it should be.

Yat Yas 1833

@ 22 Ex-PH2, a cat chasing live wires would be dumb but when he caught them it would be funny as hell!?

Devtun

Wonder why Union of Chikago Socialist Republik has the lowest population count since the 1920 census. People also fleeing Illinois at rate of 1 person every 10 minutes. The vampires of Chikago & Springfield sucking the rest of the state dry. Illinois has 4th highest debt in nation $271B w/ $192B in pension liability – considered worst funded of all states. Taxes taxes and more taxes as Chikago & rest of Illinois tries to tread water.

streetsweeper

Maybe the socialist government of Cook County, IL is trying to keep pace with their brethren, the socialist government of Detroit, MI. Maybe a “See if Chicago can be more like Detroit”?

2-17 AirCav

I can hear Martin O’Malley, Governor of MD now, “Damn! Why didn’t we think of that!”

Hack Stone

They will use the money to try to get the Olympic Committee to reconsider having Chicago host the 2016 Olympics. The sad part is they actually thought they had a chance.

NR Pax

@11 NHSparky: I disagree with you. It’s too stupid to be retarded. It’s just plain tarded. At least retarded people can contribute something to society.

@28 2-17 AirCav: I live in MD. PLEASE don’t give the man ideas.

JP

I think we need a “Stupid Tax”

We could pay down our debt in 6 months!

Rik

@21 – Yat Yas, would that be the El Charro’s on Country Club and First Street in Mesa? That’s my wife’s favorite!

Ex-PH2

Yat Yas, I have a cat who chews on live wires. I have sprayed them with Bitterend, and she doesn’t care. I’m waiting for the bitedown and shriek from her.

Now, guys, remember that the only urban place that exists in Illinois is Chicago. There is nothing south of that. One governor in the past tried to get the capital moved to Chicago so that he wouldn’t have to go to Springfield and miss cruising the gay bars. All those idiot politicians forget that Illinois is still a farm state, whether they like it or not, and if they actually had to spend time on a real farm mucking out stalls or putting the dairy cows on the milking machines or step in the winter mud, they’d drop dead out of sheer fright. They think butter comes from stores.

Jonn Lilyea

Don’t they have editors over there at Fox anymore? That’s worst-edited article I’ve ever read.

I wonder if I get a tax break if I put a COEXIST bumper sticker on my gun safe.

Ex-PH2

Editors? No.

Twist

People are actually able to buy guns and ammo in Cook County? That is the most shocking part in all of this.

NHSparky

Jonn…no, but I’d sure a hell get a laugh out of it.

PintoNag

Sounds like a good way to make the victims pay twice, if you ask me. They get taxed for violence, and then get to experience it.
