GA Tech student stops home invasion
Beretverde sends us today’s feel good story about a Georgia tech student who stopped a home invader with well-placed center-mass shot. From the Atlanta Journal Constitution;
Atlanta police Capt. Adam Lee told the AJC that the three male Tech students were asleep inside their home on Curran Street off 10th Street about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday when an intruder broke through a front window of the house.
After being awakened by the breaking glass, one of the residents, a first-year graduate student at Tech, grabbed a handgun and went to investigate, Lee said.
Lee said that at some point, the intruder caused the student “to believe that they were in danger, and he shot the person one time in the chest.”
The former intruder who will probably think twice next time is in the hospital. Hopefully, he’ll survive so that he can serve time and think about what he did, and it will be a painful life. Police aren’t sure if the intruder weilded a weapon, and they haven’t interviewed the student yet, who seems shook up about the shooting. Probably less so, than he might have felt if he hadn’t had the gun, though.

I grew up in north metro Atlanta, was there a few years ago when assigned to ARCENT, and have several friends and children of friends who attended or attend GT. It has always been known as a horrible neighborhood (Techwood Homes and now their remnants), to the point that I would actively deter my son from choosing Tech if he were so inclined, despite it being an excellent school. The campus police were advocating walking in groups after dark, which only increased the number of students who would be robbed at one time coming back from the library or restaurants. It’s about time that some of the students do something.
Hopefully this asshat will suffer the indignity of shitting in a bag for the rest of his life.
I was in Smith Hall my freshman year there, right along North Avenue and I-75/85. Total craphole. Never took the tunnel.
Multiple robberies towards Tech students have been making the news as of late. Daylight armed robberies as well. Looks like the first year graduate student (the shooter) learned something of value.
Hopefully, he WON’T survive and sue the student.
NHSparky – part of the reason why I went to UMass for my engineering degree vice returning to Atlanta and Tech was the crime. The other part was that, with two woman’s colleges very close to the UMass campus, even an engineering student could be occupied in the evenings.
Current Tech student, former Marine. This news is good news. I hope it sends a message. It it, however, unfortunate that graduate school doesn’t teach students to shoot twice.
I hope we see more and more of these types of news from all over America. Time to hit back at the thugs and lowlifes, one bullet at a time.
Buzz, at least the grad school has taught center mass, and gotten away from “shoot to wound”.
Tman: I’d prefer “2 bullets at a time”. Gonna fire, best to make sure.
UpNorth, I have to hand it to the kid. One shot in the chest from what I assume was one shot fired. If you’re dumb enough to shoot, be smart enough to kill.
I don’t blame the student in light of all the recent muggings of GT students, 3 yesterday in broad daylight right on the street, but the latest updates on this story seem to indicate that the victim was another student who was high on drugs and lost and trying to gain entry into what he thought was his residence. http://www.wsbtv.com/news/news/local/police-burglar-shot-georgia-tech-student/nPfCx/
I lived at the old Techwood Hall. It was on Techwood and across North Ave from the rest of campus (Yes, I’m carbon dating myself). That area was (and probably still is) a shithole. Pretty much most of the surround area was pretty rough especially east and south. Apparently it still is.
Coastie–sadly, Junior’s is no longer on North Avenue, although they have something CALLED Junior’s on campus.
“Dress two cheese, side!”
Never forget it. But we’ll always have the Varsity.
Double tap Hondo!
Tman: Nope. Just two rounds aimed at the same target, fired as quickly in succession as is reasonably possible, in order to raise the probability of removing the threat.
I prefer my old range Sgt’s philosophy, shoot til they fall down. If nothing else, the accumulated weight of the ammo will make them fall.
And the incident here, ended much better than this one, http://www.woodtv.com/dpp/news/local/grand_rapids/veto-sex-assault-break-in-arraignment-060812
NHSparky, I actually remember when they moved Juniors. As I recall it went to a building at the base of Tech Tower or right next to it. I think that was my last year on campus. I had some kind of computer drafting course that was right next door so I used to stop and get coffee before/after class. What I learned in that class basically means I can made crude drawings on my cave wall with a rock compared to what the kids are currently learning.
Are you still up there? Has anyone stolen the T lately?
Unfortunately, the intruder turns out to be another Tech student who lives next door, came home drunk as hell, and tried entering the wrong house.
Coastie–IIRC, that was (for me, at least) EGR1170–Engineering Graphics. Pre-CAD days. And I HATED that class with every fiber of my being.
Nope–up in NH. And if the “Rats” are worth a shit, they’re figuring out ways to steal the “T” and bang chicks from Agnes Scott (aka “Anxious Twat”.)
A idea that will never happen. Handgun Safety and Markmanship 101. No credit, just your personal safety.Must supply own pistol and AMMO. i wonder how big the class or classes would be?
