Man brings gun to knife fight
Editor’s Note: Because you guys won’t stop sending me the link to this article from A YEAR AGO, I bumped up the post I wrote A YEAR AGO.
Salt Lake City’s ABC4 tells the story of gun carrying man who put a stop to a nut with a knife randomly stabbing people outside a store where he had purchased the knife;
Then, before the suspect could find another victim – a citizen with a gun stopped the madness. “A guy pulled gun on him and told him to drop his weapon or he would shoot him. So, he dropped his weapon and the people from Smith’s grabbed him.”
By the time officers arrived the suspect had been subdued by employees and shoppers. Police had high praise for gun carrying man who ended the hysteria. Lt. Brian Purvis said, “This was a volatile situation that could have gotten worse. We can only assume from what we saw it could have gotten worse. He was definitely in the right place at the right time.”
Dozens of other shoppers, who too could have become victims, are also thankful for the gun carrying man.
Isn’t it comforting to know that in a world gone mad, there are still sane people who see it as part of their civic duty to be armed.

Yep. Perplexing to me that so MANY don’t understand this.
Larry Correia posted the link on Twitter, so I asked him if the gunman was him. He said no, but wondered if it might be one of his students.
Good Guy with Gun – 1
Bad Guy with Knife – 0
Good thing this got out before the MSM buried it.
I fail to understand why the knife-nutjob was given a chance to drop his weapon – that crap is for the movies and cartoons.
The SOB should have been dropped in his tracks, perhaps with a warning afterwards.
@ 5 … You are correct … perhaps. Deadly force was seemily or certainly authorized or justified. However, deadly force does not have to be used. In this case the good guy could have eliminated the possible threat of further serious bodliy harm or death by employing two to the chest and one to the head … game over. However, the good guy “made the call” and his actions elimnated the threat. Either way: Good Guy with Gun – 1. Bad Guy with Knife – 0.
Amen! Like I have said before: “the cops are only 6 minutes away—when you need them in 20 seconds.”
I’m inclined to agree with Frank. I’ve seen some videos of actual knife attacks; a knife wielding assailant can do major damage very fast. Stopping to talk to this wingnut was a dangerous risk.
The gunman probably slept better that night though, not having had to kill anyone.
I agree with Frank. The dude should’ve been sent to his maker. I don’t see how the police would be inclined to charge him considering the potential for death and destruction a knife wielding lunatic can inflict. I’ve seen knife attacks on video and it is so sudden, so violent, and so deadly. There is no time to even react.
It could be that there were people behind the nut where the shooter didn’t have a safe shot so he did the next best thing….who knows…
@ All … I would have shot him as well without hesitation as I have seen first hand what a crazy person is capable of and the effects of edged weapons on the human body. I am only ascerting that the good guy “made the call” and allowed crazed knife guy to live and eliminated the threat all at the same time. @ 8 Astute observation regarding not having to kill him.
Impossible for any of us to second guess whether he should or should not have taken the shot. Best possible outcome is that no one else was wounded or killed.
This one’s a win. The threat was eliminated however he got there. He made the correct decision.
And I thought it was the people with the guns who were completely nuts and wanted to shoot people at random. Oops, I guess the President and the rest of the aristocracy was WRONG!
I expect the call for a national knife-registration bill to appear from the White House any minute now… {/sarc}
On a slightly more serious note, does anyone know just what the Utah law actually has to say about the use of deadly force?
Old Tanker was spot on. We don’t know if he had a clear shot or not.
Rule #4: Be sure of your target and WHAT IS BEYOND IT.
Bullets have been known to go through the intended, legally justifiable recipient. But if it then strikes and injures or kills an innocent part…game over.
A smart guy once said “There is a lawyer attached to every bullet fired…”, and that is very, very true.
It was the good guy’s call; I’m not going to second guess him because I wasn’t there. But if he had a totally clear shot and didn’t take it…I still won’t second guess him.
But I would have taken the shots, if it was safe to do so.
