Wrong kind of egg, but good eye, kid
SnafuDude sends us a link from Military.com about some British kids on an Easter egg hunt who discovered a handgrenade among the hidden treats;
The family alerted police, who quickly cordoned off the area and part of a nearby road as part of safety precautions.
The Explosives Ordnance Disposal then carried out a controlled explosion.
“The EOD has attended the scene and destroyed the object in a controlled explosion,” said an Avon and Somerset Police spokesman.
WTF?

someone must not like their kid that much
Did the kid know it was a grenade? Was it UXO from WWII?
…wait, Britain, couldn’t be UXO unless it was used during training. Never mind, brain fart on my part.
It doesn’t sound like the grenade was left for any nefarious purpose. The area where the egg hunt was being held is on the site of an old military base and it seems as though the grenade is naught but a WWII left over that made an untimely appearance.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that using an old military base for a children’s activity wouldn’t be such a great idea in the first place?
This is good training for the kids.
“Good job, Timmy. Now remember to not eat any of your eggs until the bomb squad has had a look at them to make sure they are safe.”
First Halloween candy and now this… What next, exploding presents mailed during Christmas time? Oh, wait…
Ah, I can hear it now . . . (thick English accent)
“Yueh . . . yes, yueh playing with the pineapple! Leave it, laddie! We’re lookin’ fer eggs – not fruit!”
(apologies to Walter Waters et al)
That was a pretty common occurence in Germany during the 80’s. They found a couple of old WWII bombs on our post when they were excavating for a new motor pool.
Good thing the kid didn’t turn it in to the authorities, because they’d have arrested him for possession of a deadly weapon.
They need to start teaching kids there: “Just say No to Frags.” or “Remember when throwing grenades up hill or up stairs, gravity is your enemy.”
I think if I found one when I was a kid, I would have just taken it out in the woods, pulled the pin and tossed it really far- for fun.
My kid would have been pissed they took it away.
Reminds me of when I first got to the Proteus (Guam.) They called away a security alert one night. Come to find out, one of the radiomen was out on a “boonie stomp” a couple of weeks before, found a leftover grenade from WWII, and put it on top of one of the radio racks on the ship.
Oh yeah, that went over REAL well.
Here comes Peter Cottontail, Hoppin down the bunny trail, Hippity Hoppity Easter’s on it’sBOOM!!!!
